CHITTAGONG, May 13: Young Tamim Iqbal must consider himself unlucky to be overlooked by the Bangladesh selectors for the Test squad that will take on India later this month. The exciting left-handed opener, who has also been overlooked for the Asia side by the ACC selectors, seems to have been branded as an ODI specialist, who is an automatic choice for the game's shortest version, Twenty20.
Labels are hard to get rid of in modern cricket. Tamim, who is completely fearless and often uses unorthodox methods to perplex rival bowlers, had played a key role in Bangladesh's successful run chase against India in the World Cup. He bothered the Indians no end in the first game before playing a poor shot to get out and was tragically run out in the second ODI.
The Indians sure will not be complaining to see his name missing from the Test side, for Tamim is in the Virender Sehwag mould. As with the Delhi dasher, there is always a chance that Tamim can get out cheaply, but when he gets going, he usually puts his team in a winning position with his unorthodox strokeplay. Another surprising omission from the Test squad is young Mushfiqur Rahim. The diminutive wicketkeeper-batsman has been the find of the World Cup, but the Bangladesh selectors, by turning the clock back to veteran Khaled Mashud have clearly indicated that they have a soft corner for long-serving seniors.
