No wonder Shane Warne has loved beating England for all these years. Underneath that 'fair dinkum' Aussie male exterior lay a German desperately trying to get out.

For Warne has spent part of his preparations for today's Lord's final by looking into the possibility of applying for German nationality so he can continue to play county cricket as a non-overseas player.

Counties are currently allowed to field two overseas players but that quota will be halved next season. European Union passport holders are exempt, however, and Hampshire captain Warne is investigating whether he can exploit his genealogy.

"My mum was German. She came over to Australia when she was, I think, four or five," he said. "With only one overseas next year, it's something we're looking at."

Warne, Test cricket's record wicket-taker, will lead Hampshire in today's Friends Provident Trophy final against Durham at Lord's. He is contracted to Hampshire until the end of next season, and would not be the first overseas player to exploit EU passport regulations.

Warne's South African team-mate Nic Pothas qualifies through Greek ancestry. "There's been some amazing things happen here in England with people to play as locals, and all that sort of stuff, so it's something we're investigating," Warne added. "We'll just have to find out what happens with that."
