Default Disciplinary action against Jahurul Islam

DHAKA, Wednesday, 27 February 2013

Media Release

Disciplinary action against Jahurul Islam

Bangladesh batsman Jahurul Islam has been fined fifty percent of his Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) final match fees for breach of his National Player contract terms.

Islam, a Grade C player under Central Contract System of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), was found to be in non compliance of one of the terms and conditions of the contract system. The non compliance was that he had taken part in a cricket match, namely an inter university competition, without prior permission or authorisation of the BCB. The matter was further compounded by the fact that Islam, who was captaining the BCB North Zone in the day-night final of the BCL, decided to take part in the aforesaid university competition on the third day of the final, thereby taking part in two matches on the same day.

Islam appeared before a BCB hearing on 26th February 2013 and admitted that it was a major error in judgement on his part, and he did not fully comprehend the implications of his action thereof.

However, the BCB Disciplinary Committee felt that as an experienced cricketer at domestic and international level, Islam should have been more aware of the terms of his engagement with the BCB and as captain of a side playing in the final of a first class event, he should have displayed a more responsible attitude not only to his teammates but also to the outcome of the match.

Finally, by playing in an unauthorised capacity, in a format of an unfamiliar type of game, he had exposed himself unnecessarily to the risk of possible injury, thereby jeopardising the selection process of the Bangladesh Test squad for the tour of Sri Lanka.

In the light of the above, the BCB endorsed the Committee’s recommended that Islam is fined half of his match fees for the BCL final match. The player has also been cautioned that a similar breach of contract terms in future will automatically carry a two-match suspension of first class matches.
