Football has always been very popular in the Bengal. In fact, it was the most popular sport until cricket caught up. During 70s and 80s, television became more prevalent and Brazil/Argentina were the dominant teams. Pele was already a legend by then and then you had Maradona mesmerizing the football world .

The dynasties continued with Brazil producing Dunga, Bebeto, Romario, Rivaldo, Ronaldo. Argentina dipped a bit but still had Batistuta, Diego Simone, Crespo. That's why the overwhelming support for either team.

Historically Italy also had some support after the big 2 (who liked Baggio, Maldini, Buffon, Del Piero) and now people also root for Germany/Spain/Netherland because they produce top players. But Brazil/Argentina was the original rivalry dating back decades and that's why its more fun to be in one of the camps.

I don't mind all this football craze. Its WC after all. The biggest sporting event in the world.

p.s. that's my observation. I might be wrong.
