Default BPL's effect on our total cricket- Your thoughts

I know everyone is so excited about BPL and waiting to see all these local and international stars in action. I am equally excited but would like to give you something to think about until the tournament begins. What are you hoping BPL will bring into our cricket and what are your fears?

I will start with mine.
Knowing our cricket administrators for so long I don't believe the money earned from BPL will be poured into our domestic cricket as promised. But there has to be some sort of benefit I guess. Definitely sharing the dressing room with internationally successful players with help young local cricketers to a certain extent. But the major achievement from this I believe will be that we might get a new look National t20 squad. I have a feeling we will see a bunch of young cricketers demonstrating their hitting skills and the selectors will be forced to include them in the national squad since these cricketers will perform right in front of public eyes. And eventually we might see a t20 squad made up just with the t20 specialists. With the increasing volume of international t20 matches and a world cup in every 2 years this wont be a bad thing i guess.

On the other side of the coin, again, based on the knowledge about our money sucking cricket administrators I fear first class cricket will be neglected more than before. Previously their main source of money was international matches held in the country. To add to that now they will have BPL at home every year. So why bother about domestic first class cricket! And thats where our cricket will be hurting I fear. Our performance in the longer version mathces might take a dive.

I will think of more pros and cons and post later as I will head back to watch Big Bash final now. But feel free to add your thought.

My fear is it will ruin our FC structure. Secondly, countries only professional league till now was DPL which was bringing in some income for lots of player will soon become a deserted leaving lots player without a penny. If they can't make it to top 30-40 players they will earn next to nothing. If my maths is right at least 100 odd players in the country will miss out. It's good to say if you are not the best you don't deserve it, but to have a league you need those players.

I think it will unearth some serious talent over time, and give the young players a little more incentive to pick up cricket as a viable career path. It will raise the standards of national team by taking these younger players and nurturing them, letting them understand that international cricket is very different to domestic (and in Bangladesh, there is an even bigger disparity). It will also decentralize cricket in the long run when more stadiums are built. All in all, it will help, change and improve Bangladesh's standard of cricket.

This is what i think:

Pros:

  • Discover new talent
  • Good exposure for our players to play with some world class players
  • Money influx
Cons:
  • Young players may get too hooked up with T20 than FC cricket
  • FC Structure may be ignored to accommodate BPL
  • BPL franchisee may have more power on BCB (in other word, BCB officials may be controlled by powerful BPL franchisee)
Results:

Results will depend on BCB officials. They can make BPL positive for our crickets Or, negative. If we consider both, then

Positive:
  • BCB may invest more in developing FC structure (stadium, pitch, players remuneration etc) with the earned money in BPL.
  • Young players will be more confident and skillful.
Negative:
  • FC Structure will be as it is, BCB will now be more active with BPL and will be focused on expansion of BPL.
  • Not many players will be available for FC rather they will be interested in DPL, BPL.

To add to this very good post from Naimul,

- Players outside the national team will earn a very good living which will encourage more people to take up cricket as a profession.

- Competition in the DPL and NCL will heat up as players will be desperate to book a place in the BPL teams.

- Bangladesh will become a global destination for the cricketers worldwide which will enhance our country's image. People are already taking note of the amount some of the big names have been auctioned for and all of a sudden, Bangladesh is not a dirty little poor country anymore.

- Money talks. Money talks good. You start to earn your dough from here, you will stop talking crap about here. All of a sudden, everyone will looove Bangladesh.

- The awe effect, if there is still any, will be fade off from our players mindset who in turn will start to command respect from their foreign counterpart. Only if they can match it with their onfield performance...

- If we can organize and manage few editions of BPL in a row, it will enhance our image as a good organizer on our own of big event of international standard.

- Players exposed to more international coaching, even for a shorter period of time.
Current bunch will feel the heat to pull up their socks.

- We might finally see the decentralisation of cricket. Each team will need to have their own base with training facilities.

My only fear is that the sustainability of the BPL. We are not good at that. One year big hoopla will not do any good.

It will help. Think of it this way, there are atleast 6 world-class coaches and atleast 30 international in-form players who will be playing with our young players. That will help the young players toughen up their mindset to play at the international stage.

Will it hamper our first class cricket? No. We can argue till the cows come home but the fact of the matter is, only INDIA is the country that seems ( on surface) that is impacted by IPL. But people are not acknowledging that Indians are not playing their T20 leading scorers in Test are they? Did they have better bowlers before the IPL and now lost them? No... Are the South Africans, Australians or Pakistanis affected by T20, while dominating Test Cricket? No

So to prove that T20 impacted First Class is total bull because India has one of the most gruelling FC cricket in the world still and the strongest T20 infrastructure yet they are suffering at Test is due to their Star worshipping, poor planning and seleciton process. Previous T20 world champion Pakistan's BOOM BOOM cricket is also co-existing with players who are dominating test cricket; No need to mention Australia's position here..

The reality is without T20 tournament, Bangladeshi players were not in a position to compete in that format and gain the exposure they need for a new world of cricket. We needed a new revenue stream for our players and board to take the sport professionally and be in-form and compete internationally. The rest is upto BCB think-tank on how to re-invest the money into building new training facilities, hire quality staff or build strong A team, U-13, U-17, U19 teams..

What about corruption? Does anyone think there will be wide-ranging corruptions with the stakes higher than ever before?

It is all good so far except the too much lafalafi by DG.

The future impact will be judged by our performance in ODIs and Tests.

BPL has also produced many jobs in the modelling, ramping, catwalking industry. This is a good sign for our economy too!

For our fans:

We can actually see other players outeisde the nat team playing, including upcoming talents on tv live, which never happened before. In that way, we can have a look at their tech.skills. it will surely help selectors too as i seriously doubt they regularly watch domestic cricket from the stadium

Yeah I agree with Nadim. For me that is a big plus from this BPL. Rather than just speculate on players based on their stats, we can actually see for ourselves how they're performing and how good they're technique is.

There are a lot more pros then cons. Our players get to compete with and against quality players in domestic cricket. Hopefully our T20 performance for the national team will improve. Competition amongst the Bangladeshi players will improve as well as their motivation to perform. Also maybe we can find a good death bowler and a #7 for the national team in ODIs.

I was totally against the T20 format and BD players playing in IPL. Nothing has changed in my opinion.
+++

We will continue to see Tamim trying to fetch balls almost out of reach and in the process get caught. Now there will be even bigger number of players trying to do so. That is the ultimate negative affect. Longer version is based on patience. This format teaches exact opposite of that. So we would suck in Test cricket even more once this goes in to full force in few years.

Finally, money corrupts. I feel sorry for the Cricketers and Admins. Ultimately they would be doing the biggest disservice to themselves first.

You are still treating T20 as the step child of cricket. ...??

TE, essay and T/F (MCQ) both can test the ability and teach a person....
Test Cricket/Essay and T20/MCQ .... Both are real..... Cricket/Study

In your logic T20 should be grand child ... as an offspring of ODI .....

seconded .to me the only benefit the young players will get besides financial support is the chance of playing with and against international players in their early careers.এতে করে এদের কইলজা বড় হবে :-) .but I see no benefit for senior players besides financial support.one or two may get their lost confidence back.
