Dubai is also pretty artificial. Someone tell me what is so great about building tall buildings ? Why are they unable to build a single world class university there? Maybe its because you need great people to be a great city and not just tall buildings.
True! Bolded are the reasons we left Dubai in the first place. I do not like Arabs personally. They are racist and hypocrite. Anyways, I would refrain from generalizing, I did also came across very nice Arabs but only few.

Exactly my feeling. I think they're trying to follow Singapore's model, but there are great risks involved in that scheme. Also, as smentioned by another poster, each and every construction should be planned in a greater scheme of sustainability, not just in environmental terms, but also socio-economically.

Spectacular buildings are not enough to make a great place, it's the people who lives there that matters most.

Its an old matter, and Dubai's supporters initially never accept that ts true. When you do make them admit it, they justify it by saying:

1) Caste system exists in india so ppl should criticise that before attacking Dubai
2) The USA treated red indians a lot worse
3) The workers may be treated bad , but they are better off than in their hoem countries (most often thats untrue)

What is really sad is that a a lot of Brits and westerners (the ones who benefitted from Dubai) actually support such oppression (in contrast to their own countries, where it is politically incorrect to do so) , as they benefit indirectly from it.

Also, another unfortunate fact is that for all of Dubai's bad treatment of workers, the conditions are often worse in Saudi Arabia or Kuwait.
