China’s child-fuelled medal machine keeps cranking out Olympic gold

Quote:
The only thing that matched the awesome speed of Chinese swimming star Ye Shiwen’s bullet-like finish in the women’s 400-metre individual medley last Saturday was the speed with which suspicion followed.
Had the Chinese taken a page from the old, drug-tinged East German playbook?
Was the 16-year-old swimmer on steroids?
Had Chinese trainers finally found a way around the International Olympic Committee’s anti-doping tests?
Chinese officials were enraged by the innuendo.

Great to see Phelps getting what he deserves. Heard nothing about Nepalese, Bhutanese, Afghan and oh, Pakistani athletes competing so far. More than 1.5 billion, hard laboring people, are about to come home with less than 5 medals as expected. None in a major event.

India reportedly spent over Rs 2.5 billion in preparation for London 2012 and that includes well paid foreign coaches and new facilities

Saina just lost the first game of the semifinal to Wang, her Sainij ofonent. She seems nervous and a bit out of sorts. Choking?

Saina loses to her Sainij ofonent. No top medal for the Haryana player raised in Hyderabad. But she can still get the bronze. I'm reluctant to use the term "win" when it comes to 3rd place.

Gagan U, the Indian 1500m swimmer, is quickly out of contention and convincingly in last place after the first 50m in the heat!

Haha wow that's just sad. They spent that much money and all they have to show for it is just 2 medals? Just shows how much of a joke India and the other subcontinental countries are in sports.

arey eto kheladhula kore time noshto kore ki hobe... someone needs to help keep the world running....

on the topic, we can never come up with 2.5 billion taka budget for any olympic ever but success wont come for free.

But when we come up with some money, we should really really focus on the events we can get 'close' to the podium with like shooting, archery and any other not so physically challenging sports. One Qatari shooter won the bronze with only 2 months of training before the olympic ...

And I am sure cricket and some other sub-continental sports will eventually make it to the olympic (kabadi et al)... but China might get better than us by the time that olympic comes... but I'd still like to be hopeful...

Phelps should've had 2 more golds, easily! The one where Lochte beat him by chocking up a huge lead, and the other one right before his 19th Gold where he was just being lazy (his own words). He didn't complete strokes. He floated in, while that SA dude charged in and won. He was being a "lazy runner."

But either way, 17 aint all that bad.

This is sub continent. Do you even think that huge amount of money would have reached players??

Can't say about Bangladesh or Pak, But India at least is showing improvement and we have started to compete and I am hopeful that in coming years we will win more at the top level and other games.

what's wrong with using "win" when it comes to bronze?? As if its easy to win a medal at this level.

So Saina loses the first game but gets the bronze anyway as her Chinese opponent retires injured.

you found time to laugh about a guy who participated on 'universality place' (IOW place holder) and had to compete in 1500 m when his own category is 800 m; but no mention of the armyman who bettered his personal best to get silver in shooting.

meanwhile kolkata lad joydeep karmakar came out of nowhere narrowly missed out on a bronze and came 4th in 50m prone rifle shooting. this is his first major international multi-discipline event, he wasn't there even in CWG2010 or asiad !

Serena killed SRK! At first I kinda wanted SRK to win, but she was getting annoying, specially after winning that set. I was like really? Cmon you are getting owned. Calm down ho!

She is still very hot though.

It's the overall sporting culture that is just not there in the subcontinent. You see here in the US that athletes literally run like machines. In the eastern part of Asia, you see athletes train the same way as well. I don't really see subcontinental countries ever really doing well in such sporting events until the culture is improved on.

By the way, my very good friend's brother won the bronze in the men's four rowing event for the USA. Really happy for him.

US Women's Epee team beats the Russians in SDOT to get the bronze. What an amazingly exciting match! What inspiring performances from Maya Lawrence and the Hurley sisters. Proud of you ladies and GO US of A!
