BBC: Bangladesh Buddhists pick up pieces after mob rampage

Bangladesh Buddhists pick up pieces after mob rampage
By Anbarasan Ethirajan
BBC News, Ramu, Cox’s Bazar District
Hundreds of Buddhists lost their homes after the bloody clash in villages
Shashanko Barua's voice trembles when he recounts how he and his family ran for their lives to escape an angry Muslim mob last year.
They hid in a forest for a whole night near their village in the south-eastern Bangladeshi district of Cox's Bazar before returning home.
Mr Barua, a Buddhist, says that when he returned to the village, he found his small tin-roof house had been completely destroyed and all his belongings looted. His neighbours also faced similar fates.
Hundreds of Buddhists became homeless overnight after thousands of Muslims rampaged through villages, looting houses and burning down Buddhist temples.
While Bangladesh has witnessed bloody clashes between Muslims and minority Hindus in the past, it was a rare attack on the Buddhists.

Our intelligence agencies need to be completely revamped. Current bunch is utterly useless.

Particularly because they are tasked with keeping tabs on the opposition (regardless of which part is in power).
And of course, this has all become yesterdays news. After all, they were not Muslims. We are more wont to get our panties in a wad over violence in distance parts, say Kashmir, or France, or the US but when it happens in our own backyard? "Naah. Just a few. BNP did it. Awami League did it. Bangladesh has great religious tolerance. Look at all the Hindu or Buddhist or Christians in our civil and military leadership."

Your sarcasm drives especially home with a Buddhist in military leadership notion, Doc.

This is Terrible. It's a strange world we live in. Tit For Tat type world. on one side Muslims are killing Buddhists and on the other side Buddhists are killing Muslims(Burma)...

Call me ignant, but I think we are oversimplifying grossly here. Only 2 seconds Google search reveals that they were military junta undoubtedly twisting Theravada tradition. Calling them Buddhists is same as calling terrorists Muslim... Oh wait! Witty Rifat!

Theraveda != Tatmadaw

We have a tremendous propensity to hijack a thread either if the topic makes us uncomfortable or to demonstrate the panache with which we exercise verbal gymnastics.
