On March 1, 1971 Pakistani military dictator Yahya Khan postponed the National Assembly session that was to be held after the December 1970 elections.

On 2 March 1971, the initial version of the flag was hoisted in Bangladesh for the first time at Dhaka University, as the Vice President of Dhaka University Students' Union (DUCSU), student leader A. S. M. Abdur Rab, raised the flag.


Awami League chief Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman announced a general strike to protest the president's action
