Default Bengali director Rituparno Ghosh dies.

Bengali director and actor Rituparno Ghosh died of a cardiac arrest at his Kolkata home at 7.30 am today. He was 49 and would have been 50 on August 31. (Also read: Bengal's brave young director)

Mr Ghosh had been suffering from pancreatitis, his family said.

Mr Ghosh's residence has been crowded with friends, colleagues and politicians all morning, including West Bengal chief minister Mamata Banerjee. Ms Banerjee said "Bengal has lost a golden director." She also said that Mr Ghosh's body would be taken to Nandan, the state-run movie theatre in Kolkata, for mourners to pay their last respects.

He was one of the few who could make a good, yet enjoyable Bangla movie. Sad day indeed!

At a time when bangla films were plagued with mediocrity, he gave us films like Bariowali, Unishe April, Dahan, Chokher Bali, Shubho Mahurat to name a few. Almost all his films, though vastly different in storytelling, has one common feature, an unmistakable trait. For all his films glorified women. It captures their pain, their passion, their feelings in a way that is not confined within the runtime, but captured the society we live in.

Unlike writers, singers, musicians; gifted directors are a rarity in current bangla cinema. We not only lost him today, we lost all those films that he will no longer make, and all those rules he will no longer break. But all is not lost. There is an emerging breed of young directors who are not afraid to challenge the norms, and who will keep asking questions.

R.I.P. to the master of storytelling.
