Bangladesh are just a poor Cricket team – let's face it. Mominul is out of form. He's still the best we got, so we have no choice but to persist with him. He's struggled at #3 so let him move back to his original position at #4.

Mominul is struggling as a lot of players struggle at some point.

Check out this 11 match stretch for Tendulkar where his average dropped from 55 to just under 50:
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/eng...s;type=batting

He averaged 34 in that time period, with quite a few matches at home. It happens. Mominul must be persisted with through the 2017 season. Period.

Mominul has a similar 10 match stretch where he is averaging just 29:
http://stats.espncricinfo.com/ci/eng...s;type=batting

The only difference is Tendy's 11 match slump was only about 8-9 months whereas Mominul's 10 game slump is over 2 years due to the long gaps in our schedule. Mominul needs some time to get into the groove. Sabbir, Soumya play all the LOIs that we have.

Lol Tendulkar vs Mominul?? Apple vs banna skin? If you don't know how to play spin..n did the same mistake in back to back innings you don't deserve 50 avg. Tbh mini is not a 50 avg player. Ill be happy if he can maintain 40 avg through out his career.

Point is, all players have bad patches here and there. Tendulkar at that point had an average of 54.92 from 60 innings...the next 18 innings he averaged just 34.

Mominul's average has dipped from 63 after 21 innings to 29 in a 19-innings slump.

Do you think mini is in bad form? Not sure though. I think its more technical problem to play spin. In a spinning track its dangerous to play back foot unless you have a solid defense. He should play on his front foot and neutralized the spin. His 2 LBW looked to me as we went back to our dark age. This is totally unacceptable!! Because of him we started to collapse. However I want to give him more time to justify his no 3 spot as this is a most important slot in test. Imrul could be an interim solution.

I don't think its a technical glitch...at least not a huge one. His technique is far poorer than Mushfiq, but so is probably nearly every batsman in the world. To me, it was a mental issue...very easy to just come on the front foot which also helps with lbw decisions as the umpire has more doubt.

Mini simply played the wrong line or misread the line...or BOTH. The bat was a good 6 inches away from the ball and it didn't turn that much...had that ball gone straight Momin would have still missed it. Could even be an eyesight issue for all we know.

You CAN play on the backfoot to balls turning away...ie RHBs can play leg spin on the backfoot and LHBs can play offies. But you have to read the line and spin. An RHB can't go on the backfoot to a googly and an LHB can't go onto the backfoot to an arm ball. There is an exception to every rule.

Going back several innings here is what happened...readers can judge about Momin since I doubt most people here have watched him as extensively as I have. Most recent matches first:

vs SL (completely misread both balls from Perera...the 2 boundaries he hit were sweetly timed).

vs India (1st innings - lbw to a jaffa from Umesh with reverse swing...technical flaw that almost every batsman in the history of the game has...2nd innings - edged Ashwin to slip...again was looking in total control and touch to get to 27, but a turning ball did him in...again most batsmen will edge turning balls...proper technique is to use soft hands while defending)

vs NZ (1st innings - looked in supreme touch to score 64 till he got a jaffa from Southee to WK...most batsmen would have gotten out to that...2nd innings - 23 runs but then chased a wide one = poor shot selection/temperament)

vs England (1st innings - edged Moeen Ali to slip...again big turn would have done any batsman...4th innings - scored 66 chanceless runs then got bowled by a spinner due to what looked like loss of concentration as the ball didn't turn at all...don't remember the other 2 dismissals but he scored 1 and 27)

Thats all of his dismissals in the last 1.5 years. Everyone struggles against the moving ball...so I wouldn't say there is any glaring problems with Momin's technique...a batsman of the class of Rahane is averaging 24 this home season due to the turning pitches. Kohli has struggled in the first 2 Tests vs Australia.

Mini is short of confidence...and hopefully we win the toss and bat first. I think all Momin needs is batting first on a flat track to get his mojo back.

Despite the fact that Mosaddek/Sabbir doing Well in Tests Alhamdulillah at the moment, Mominul should still be persisted. Form is temporary, class is permanent. Mominul has a ton of experience at test level and experience in tests matters a lot. Next time Bangladesh plays test he should still be part of the Squad at least. He did get 70 odd in the practice match.

everyone goes through bad patches. I am sure if he works with coaches, he can rectify his issues and come back stronger insha Allah. As past record indicates, Mominul is a beast when he is playing in front of home crowd.

He needs to do a Pujara.

Pujara came and smashed runs at will then lost form and was out of the team for a year or so.

Now he is scoring runs again after alot of hard work behind the scene and domestics.

Mominul needs to do the same. It's good to see player like Mominul who average 45+ not guaranteed a spot

He is young and he has the talent to be a good test batsman and he has some success to back it up.

Was he dropped unfairly? I don't think so.

Is it end of his career? Only if he thinks so.

What he should do? A step back, absorb the feedback, work hard on his weakness and come back strong in local league to make his case. He is still young and talented, nothing to be discouraged. Only thing is he need to believe in himself and work hard. In this level you shouldn't expose your weakness and get out same way... you need to learn how to address your weakness or atleast hide your weakness from your opponent...don't become too predictable , then they will exploit you. These are all part of learning process for a young player, nothing to be discouraged.

nothing wrong with his batting other than one weakness got exposed by highly accurate spinners..you have to attack the bowler to change his length which tamim sarker shakib mushy shabbir all did and he just kept blocking

Why can't mominul go to other countries and play first class cricket not just in Bangladesh, not saying England or Australia because they're very picky with players, but he can play loads of places instead of sitting around for months which he usually does

You don't have to attack to change his length, you have to use your feet to change their length,

Tamim, sarkar, Shakib and all them often came down the track and blocked it, but regardless it changed their length

With mominul when he plays aggressive he's still rooted at his crease, he needs to be able to come down and block or push singles, that's what Tendulkar did so great, I mention Tendulkar, not because of ability, but because of footwork, he like mominul didn't move his feet vs fast bowling, just perfect balance, vs spinners he had a solid forward defence and he could come down and push singles at ease, mominul needs to learn how to push these singles

1-it'll get him off strike
2-break bowlers rhythm
3-mess with bowlers lengths, and lines if rhb with him

Mominul was dropped unfairly.

He averages 47, still got dropped.
Riyad played years with a 30 average.
His replacement was KaEdge.
All players go through a bad patch.
Rahane has been doing as poorly and he hasnt been dropped even though there was a triple centurion sitting on the bench.

^^ Asad, for someone who delves into stats so much, you still fail to make any meaningful analysis.

In last one year, Rahane has been maintaining an average of 46. In the same time period, Momin's average has been 23. Rahane made his last Test century (188) less than 6 months ago, while Momin's last Test century against a G8 team is more than 3 years ago!

You can't live in the past glory forever, you know.

Comparing Momin with an Indian Test player, ie Rahane or Pujara, is obviously an apple to orange comparison, comparing the number of matches he plays per year to the number of matches they play per year. Momin's downfall began when he was turned into a Test specialist, as he does not get enough exposure to international cricket in this format, thus not progressing (rather, regressing).

Selectors are doing the right thing by trying to revive his LOI career too, by including him in the Emerging Cup.

Obviously your definition of "fairness" is different than some of our definition including the coach.

Few points:
- 2+ old stat is pointless in current selection if a player continue to struggle badly.
- This is a different regime (Haturu, Papon) and they give more importance to current form and performance.
- Yes Imrul also failed but still he scored meaningful 35 compared to 7 and 5. Imrul lost his slot due to injury, so its very fair to give him another chance.
- Its fair to give Momin chances distributed into multiple series than giving all chances in consecutive TESTs even when he is clearly showing that he is struggling. Its fair to Momin, its a safer approach for his career and its fair to the team.
- It would be unfair to Mossadek, Sabbir or Imrul to drop one on them from 2nd TEST and give Momin another chance in 2nd TEST even when it was clear to all that he was struggling.
- We won the game and the changes helped us to win the game. It was very fair change for the team and the fans.
- Momin is not Rahane.
- And yes... national team is not a rehab center.

Imrul's last 12 test matches he has been averaging 45.85. It is all about recent form and Imrul definitely has it over Mominul at the moment.

Now some will suggest dragging a test specialist into T20. Let him score some runs in ODI before putting him into T20i
