Default Save the cricket fields from land grabbers!!!

Bangladesh Cricket has improved enormously over the last decades. Unfortunately, as the fame and money stated to flow into our local and regional cricket clubs, they tend to destroy cricketing culture and replace them with corporate greed.

City club in Mirpur, Dhaka is a prime example of how corporate greed is literary destroying one of the few cricket fields left in the city. I have visited the field in January 2018 after a five years. I was saddened by decades old cricket field was destroyed by over a few years by land grabbing. I will let the pictures speak of itself.

Can BCB do anything about protecting these precious cricket grounds?

Can sports journalists make some field reports to draw public awareness?

Is it too late to save the city club field, or hundreds of fields like this around the country from corporate land grabbers.

Thank you Erfan bhaiya for bringing this up. This is outrageous. Who is in charge of these grounds? RAJUK? Ministry of Sports and Youths? BCB? Please let us know. We will do petition.

You put good effort stating your comments in red and clearly explained things to many of us in BC that cannot be there and see the situations of these grounds. Now we know. This is genuinely appreciated.

The ground looks dusty and rundown anyway, why not use the space instead for an apartment building? You can have the penthouse Erfan, for your troubles. They can have matches on the roof. We will lay artificial green grass.

Thank you for your interest.
I only visit the field once in a few years, so I do not have the latest information or any connection to the management.

Only reason I care is because I grew up watching cricket in the field. Having said that, here is the brief history of the city club field from my memories. If someone has any better/up-to-date information, feel free to correct me.

This was a beautiful cricket field that used to hold 1st Class League matches since the 80's. Most of the players of Bangladesh's first test team (Durjoy, Akram, RAfiq, Bulbul, Shanto) played cricket in this field thought the 90's. In those days, the club did not attract much attention from the politicians/Businessmen and mostly run by Ex-players or sport enthusiastic. Nothing was allowed in the field except for Cricket and Football matches and club practice.

Picture of the field before the latest developments.

Current Condition of the field

The downfall started in after 2010s when the construction boom in and around Mirpur jacked up property prices, and local politicians and businessman started showing interest in running the club.

Once they got seats in the Governing body of the club, cricket seem to be secondary to their mind.

First, they open up the field to hold Eid prayers. This was followed by holding annual picnics and Weddings for people connected to high level club officials.

Picture of Picnic Party in the club field.

This was very damaging to the field as they had to dig up the ground to put up temporary bamboo structures

Current management seem to only care about building permanent structures in the field, instead of keeping it play worthy.
They have managed to put up two new buildings, a parking lot, Shiny new billboards, title sponsors for the cricket academy, not to mention increasing the income for various commercial stores owned by the club.

Yet, the Boundaries has been shrunk, grass is nonexistent around boundary rope and yellow in the center-field, side-screens has massive holes as well as few layers of dirt in them. Forget 1st class cricket, I wouldn’t’ play school cricket in that field.

I know Bangalcricket has a lot of Cricket lovers, maybe together we start something that will make it very difficult for these policitics/Businessmetn to take over our cricket clubs for their personal gains.
