Jahanara Alam: A Women Icon of Bangladesh

Jahanara Alam is the captain of Bangladesh women cricket. She born in 1st April 1993 in Khulna. Her father Md Jahangir is the businessman and her mother is a housewife. She is the elder of their five brothers and sisters. She was fond of playing from her childhood. She played different type game like volleyball and basketball. Women cricket was not too much popular when she started cricket. Many peoples of her area discourage her from playing cricket. But her father encouraged her every time. Now the discouraging people become her fan. They arrange special prayer for her in different Mosque when she plays for our national team!

Her carrier
She playing for the national team since 2008. She left her S.S.C exam for cricket. That was Srilanka tore in 2008. She is playing ODI from 2011. That’s year Bangladesh women cricket team get one-day status. She got 16 wickets form her 17th T20 matches and also get 17 wickets from her 25th ODI matches.

About Jahanara:
She is the right-hand batsman and right-arm medium fast bowler. Yes, she is an all-rounder. She likes to lead the team from the front. She is a skilled batsman and when she bowled with her 5 feet 7-inch height it’s become difficult for any batsman to play her. Her wish to rank as an all-rounder. When she make it possible it must bring much success for us.

Her Idol:
Mashrafe Bin Mortoza her idol. She likes his captaincy and bowling. Mashrafe is the main inspiration for her. We hope she also becomes successful like Mashrafe or more. She will take our women cricket in different heights. It is too much possible for her. She is very young and energetic and she believes nothing is impossible. Go ahead Jahanara we all with you, any kind of situation. All the cricket supporter support you every time.

Her Passion:
Her passion is only one cricket. She likes to cover her head with Bangladeshi flag when she bowls. She likes wear jeans and T-shirt. She like to involve with social activity. She spent time with some underprivileged children at a function arranged by Industrial Promotion and Development Company of Bangladesh (IPDC) on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh.

Jahanara and our national women’s cricket team

Women’s cricket is not too much favorite like boys cricket. But we also like our women’s cricketers. We fell proud if they achieve any success. Problem is they do not get enough chance for play. They are not strong enough like other countries cricketers. Not too many girls are involving in crickets. We are hopeful we must be overcome all those problem and reach the success by the powerful captaincy of Jahanara Alam.

Was the article written by a journalist or a fan? So many typos:
- her "carrier"
- "When she make it possible it must bring much success for us."
- "Women’s cricket is not too much favorite like boys cricket."

HEheheeh...Yankees bhaiyo!
Manna bhai is probably a fan. I agree the writing/grammar has a number of glitches.
I could have corrected those before posting, thought of doing that - but I do not know the man, didn't have his permission, would have been unethical.
I give him great credit for writing this piece and covering a lot about our captain and great cricketer, one of the pioneers of BD women's cricket, sport - if you think about it. I found this article on a google search. And there are four comments I think I saw trailing the article and if I am not mistaken, all of them by men - what I liked about their comments was that they all were very proud of Alam and her career achievement as a cricketer and they were very respectful toward her, which a lot of times we don't see from our BD society, in public opinion comments section, I see extremely insulting, vulgar comments toward women, period! And by a huge huge proportion.

Manna bhai should have had this proof read by someone before publishing it though.
But, no worries, Manna bhai, next time - Insh Allah a better, smoother read article.

She seems pretty mediocre, especially if you look at her stats against G9 teams.

True, I totally agree with you, Eshen uncle.
But I still give her a lot of credit knowing where she is coming from, from a country of no proper Women's cricket league yet, let alone women's professional club cricket. As we all know, she has developed herself and achieved whatever she has so far, in a society and a country where women athletes are rare and are not encouraged (by the society or families). She grew up and developed her skill of playing cricket/sport in Khulna District - in a provincial town - She did not even have any advantage of Dhaka facilities (before selected for the national team) or even in Chittagong. Before being selected to the national team, she didn't even had access to a proper gym.

She does not get paid jack, what she and her national team mates get paid by BCB is a joke! And not even mentioning in comparison to the BD national BCB contracted male cricketers pay. It's a HUGE difference of pay.

In Bangladesh the Bangladesh national women's team cricketers cricketers did NOT even get paid their basic peanut salary for over 6-8 months a couple of years ago. We had a female BC member , a great inspirational poster named 'Kathbirali' who is very close and access to the BD women cricketer, came to BC and open threads to bring awareness on this issue - and the thread DIED like after 10 posts. WE BC members didn't even pay a simple courteous nod to the situation (at least from the look of the number of the posts and visits onto the thread)! We suck!
After that Kathbirali probably said screw this and never came back to the forum and stopped posting. She was rather active in BC for a short while and her incredible insight of the game truly reflected the way she engaged here through her posts.

We, BD cricket in general (the game, finesse, fitness, diet, sense of professionalism, sense of dedication to the game (at least does not reflect -to me) let alone BD women's cricket are NOWHERE near (and truly miles and miles behind) when you compare to the big cricketing countries. And these above are judging from the players inability. Now about support form the sport orgs of BD like BCB and the ministry of sport and youth affairs - for their effort and contribution - I give them ZERO. BTW from BCB, what we get is minimal, basic, that is expected by some, not in my book, I don't buy that!!! Athletes in BD do not get respect for their skill and determination - what they get after good performance or occasional good results in the field, is - stardom!

I am so extremely proud of Jahanara Alam - I pray for for everyday, so that she gets better at this sport and I would be so proud of a father, has she been my child/daughter - I would not have missed a single match of this cricketer (of course if I was still living in BD, close to her)

Stay strong, Jahanara Alam

You would be surprised to know how much strength you can gather with proper vegetarian diet. I can never be a vegetarian though lol.
