From Shaykh Hamza Yususf of the Zaytuna Institute.

When I was a kid, my parents use to beat me up for doing anything not their way. Because of those beatings, I have turned out to be extremely obedient. I apply the same principle on my wife and it works.

violence is used to prevent harm in a civilized environment. The civilized will resort to violence to prevent harm or to stop harm and The Barbaric will use violence as a means to achieve their ends...
Glad yawl found the sermon illuminating and useful. Shaykh Hamza is true scholar not only of impeccable credentials, but also a man filled with love in his heart. In the years I've known him, of him, and his work, I've never seen him espouse sectarianism, be arrogant, or assume GOD's judgment in any way, shape, or form. He looks for common ground and celebrates diversity, and "understanding" the other POV from their perspective is far more important to him than forging an "agreement." He doesn't coerce people who listen to him. May GOD continue to grace him with His blessings.
Here's a lecture from him, more food for thought.

Sorry for blurting out my off-topic thought that suddenly came into my mind.

Why should having a beard have any effect on the value of his sermons.
PS He looks like mathew perry

Dear Shardul!
Dont be so haughty, my dear brother. Listen to man's words before his appearance. See, first, if it strikes accord with your heart what he espouses. Lets not judge a book in a hurry just by looking at its cover.
I have personally known Shaikh Hamza over a decade now. I, also, have had the honour of studying with him at the Zaytuna Institute in Hayward. Let me stress -I have known or seen very few people who adheres to Sunnah of the prophet more than Shaikh Hamza! This man is a Man amongst men in our age. I say this without the slightest exaggeration. May Allah preserve him!
He is one of the very few "encyclopedic scholars" of this age who actually has a mastery over a wide range of subjects...think Ghazzali, Ibn Sina, Ibn Khaldun or Goethe! If you have any further doubts about his knowledge or spirituality I recommend you listen to his audio series entitled "the purification of heart" or any books authored or translated by him.
Btw, he HAS a beard

Maybe his wife doesn't like a full beard on him ever thought of that?
Plus to be honest with you, it's encourged that muslims keep beard, but it's not mandatory. Besides who cares, it's just a beard. There are other things far more important to being a muslim than keeping a beard. Like treating humans with respect, treating your spouse with respect, not stealing, cheating, etc., etc.

No worries,Shardul!
To add further, Shaikh Hamza Yusuf is a strict Maliki by Madhab (school of jurisprudence) and Ash'ari/Maturidi by creed/theology which is the dominant school of 'Aqeedah in Ahlus Sunnah Wa Al-jama'ah. He received his knowledge/Ijaza from traditional scholars such as Murabit Al-Hajj and Abdullah Ibn Bayyah of Shinqit amongst others. And he is in constant consultation with other leading scholars of this age. Shaykh Sa'id Ramadan Al-Buti of Damascus (whom I had the pleasure of meeting and learning from and may Allah preserve him) considers him to be the most knowledgable amongst the western 'ulamaa/scholars!
