Results of few friendly games before the the 2006 WC

The 32 teams participating in the WC has started their preparation for the 2006 WC. There have been some eye-opening matches that express their form. Expectation is high on some. Since these are friendly matches, for what its worth, some team may only work on strategy rather than showing their entire bag of tricks. But here are some interesting results from the past month. (What I mean is right before the ICC trophy we played a friendly match against Holland and lost, but in the knockout stage we beat the crap out of them when it mattered the most - 1997)

This should be good barometer on everyone's favorite teams are preparing.

Interesting is there has yet to be a Brazilian friendly game within the last month or so. I have made bold on the countries that interest me or I want to keep an eye on.

Brazil played a friendly match with a club side of Switzerland and thrashed them 8-0 with couple of strikes from Adriano and Ronaldinho.

Today Korea and Norway are going to play the warm-up match at 17:00 GMT. Hopefully Korea shine there with a convincing win!

Ultimately Korea have drawn the match with Norway 0:0.
In another match Nederlands beat Mexico 2:1.

Argentina & England performed as expected.

USA teamta ke aro strong bhabsilam (after their last WC performance) but nothing special I guess...

Australia seems stronger than expected (but they'll be underestimated anyways)

Japan keeps disappointing

where as IRAN (as I mentioned in some other thread) is capable of doing a lot of things in this WC........(Germany 2:2 Iran)

These are just my comments based on the scorelines, couldnt watch any of those friendly matches.

I thought Germany drew 2-2 with Japan, not Iran. Also it would be suicide if Iran played on the 30th of May and then once again a day after. The players would suffer from burn out, wouldn't they?

Thanks for pointing that out abdulw11, yea i was going through some other news on the net, and it was Japan who drew with the Germans. And Iran defeated BH.

Iran has a very real chance of progressing through to the 2nd Round. Group D (Angola, Mexico, Iran, Portugal) is not exactly a 'Group of death'. Iran will most likely battle out 2nd place with Mexico. Here is the recent form of both sides:

Iran

Croatia 2-2 Iran
Iran 5-2 Bosnia

Mexico

France 1-0 Mexico
Holland 2-1 Mexico

Mexico has done tremendously well to pull off two respectable results over two World Class sides. Australia plays Holland this Sunday night (AEST). It will give us all a real indication as to where they are at in their World Cup preparations.

You are absolutely right. I am going to change it asap. The problem was when I typed the thread opener post in word and then tried to post it said I had 146 images and I was allowed only 4??? So I had to delete the paragraphs, make everything in one paragraph and the post it and then edit the page. In the process of editing, Japan may have been deleted.

the Dutch looked more relaxed and was looking for a cheeky win...
i don think they played even thier 80% and was more concerned to save thier legs once realising Aussies were getting very physical...and i'd give them that..
Aussies made few really unnecessary fouls...like what was Luke (forgot his last name) thinking ??

that was his first major apperance for the socceroos after a shock selection...!!

lucky we got a great goalie, or else the score card cud hv looked embarrasing...
aussie defence didnt look that good to me...
i mean when they play teams like Brazil.. they seriously need to gear up their game...

Sydney, mate,

In world soccer, there are two basic classes of teams.

Brazil.

Then daylight.

Then everyone else.

Australia are happily back in the pack, among "everyone else".

Do I expect us to beat Brazil ? Nope. I'd be ecstatic if Australia played as well against Brazil in soccer as Bangladesh have played against Australia in cricket, except the quality gap is actually, in my opinion, bigger.

But Croatia and Japan ? Thats another story.

And I'm more than happy to walk away with 1-1 against Holland, who are not expected to bow out in the Group stage.

PS At the moment, Luke Wilkshire plays occasionally for Bristol City, back in what used to be called the Third Division of the English FA. However, Guus Hiddink reckons he's good enough for first grade. This is a subtle and understated hint that PSV Eindhoven will be making an offer soon, just like they did for Archie Thompson - and Micheal Beauchamp wont be playing for the Central Coast Mariners for too long either.

Ian, i completely agree with u mate..
but as with u... my main concern is with Croatia and Japan...
i might hv used a bad example naming Brazil, but from what i saw last night, i will be quite tensed when the socceroos plays the japanese...
now i havent seen Japan playin for ages, but from what the warm up games results giving me, they must hv a good attack, strinking twice against Germany...

i strongly believe we have a good chance of making it to the 2nd round...
reckon the first game against Japan would be the most crucial one..

A measly 1-0 win against the lowly Malta, overnight, doesn't exactly help Japan's cause. Ok, Australia's defence can learn from their errors from the Netherlands game - but don't forget - they did improve as the match progressed. In reference to Japan "striking twice against Germany" - Australia put 3 past Germany & 2 past Argentina during the Confederations Cup, in Germany, last year (with Farina in charge). To escape with a 1-1 draw (with 10 men) is a tremendous effort - given the strength of the opposition. With Hiddink in charge & with Schwarzer in goals - anything is possible.

Hmm! both side substituted 6 players. I guess in friendly you can do that. Ronaldo scored a goal on the 9th minute, didn't play the second half. This is the last warmup match for Brazil.

Australia's journey to the World Cup has been a tough and emotional one...

first they had to play twice world champion uruguay in the qualifying rounds...in the extremely tough game australia made it having secured the required goals in the penalty shootout..

then they had to play euro cup champion greece in the qualifying round....they won that game...

then world number 3 netherland....after suffering inital blow nd a red card, australia have managed to draw that game...

while the road has been tough...it none the less made australia powerful opponent which can cause few upsets coz not many teams out there are aware of australia's potential.

I'm not denying that Uruguay home and away was tough ... but both Greece and Holland were friendlies.

In as much Australians understand "friendly" international matches, anyway.

I was watching I-Channel on the other day, where BD Cricket Celebrities were talking about the FIFA WC and their favourite teams. Aminul Islam Bulbul told that he is very fond of Brazil, but this time he has a very soft corner for the Aussies, because he is an Australian, and he feels proud for that team. Nice gesture, I liked it.

Oddly enough, Australia against Brazil in soccer is a lot like Balgladesh vs Australia in cricket.

Both teams have supercoaches, with a respected track records who have adopted minnows - Bangladesh have Dav Whatmore, Australia Gus Hiddink.

Bangladesh have some pretty good players Rafique, Masrafee, Bashar, Pilot and Ashraful, while Australia have Kewell, Grella, Viduka, Schwartzer and Cahill. I'm not pushing things too far when I'll pair Sharihar Nafees with Luke Wilkshire (who, I'm going to repeat, is a regarded by his coach at Bristol City, in the old English Third Division, as a bench warmer. On the other hand, Guus Hiddink - who hasnt done anything as a coach other than a UEFA Cup, and taking Holland and South Korea to the semis of the World Cup - was happy to slot him starting at central midfield against Holland).

And Brazil are, well, Brazil.
