Default Another Bengali in the Indian Team

Shib Sankar Paul has been selected for the Indian team of 14 as a medium pacer. He comes from a very remote place called TufanGanj of Coochbihar Dist, West Bengal . TufanGanj is just across the Rangpur border where a lot of Bangladeshi enclaves "ChitMahals" are and it is famous for Singer AbbasUddin. If not told where you are - you can easily confuse this place with any remote sub-division town of northern Bangladesh. It amazes me that you can find a 6'4'' strong-built pacer in a remote north bengal village but they are so hard to find in the cities.

Best wishes for Shib.

ShibSankar Paul

Debashish Mohanti and S.S. Das are from Orissa. Bengalis who played for India in the past include Pranob Roy( now national selector from East Zone), Ambar Roy, Dilip Doshi,Subroto Bannerji( He is a Bengali but played for Bihar in Ranji Trophy).

ArunLal originally played for Delhi. He shifted to West Bengal, played for West Bengal and settled down in Bengal and ever married a Bengali girl. So he is a Bengali by now. Ashok Malhotra is another who shifted to Bengal after playing for Punjab earlier.

What about Pankaj Roy(1960-61 )? I think he was the most famous bengali cricketer before Ganguli era.

Orissa, as well as Bihar (and Assam) have significant number of Bengalis. These two names seem to be ethnically Bengali.

Pankaj Roy happened to be Pranab's father.

The thread was split after this point as the discussion suggested a new topic. It can be found under Forget Cricket forum, Rabindranath & Bengali
