Exclamation The Tipaimukh Dam will flood Sylhet!

I want to alert every Bangladeshi from Sylhet or anywhere from Bangladesh of the threat of the TIPAIMUKH DAM project. The Dam which is planned by the Indian government is just one kilometre from the border with Bangladesh and threatens the water supply to much of Sylhet. It is being built on a fault line which means it is vulnerable to earthquake which would then flood the north east region.

The India government is using their power to complete this destructive project without due respect to the destruction and devastation this will bring both to the natural environment and the social an economic well-being of the area. India, once again, is trying to justify this as it did with the construction of the Farakka Barrage. But the evidence shows the harm Farakka Barrage has brought to Bangladesh.

The Indian government has not consulted the Bangladeshi people who will be affected by this project. It is in violation of international law. By constructing Tipaimukh and other barrages, India is threatening to deprive the people of Bangladesh of life-giving water. India has resumed construction of the Tipaimukh barrage on the Barack river just a kilometre north of Zakiganj in Sylhet. The construction work was stalled in March 2007 in the face of protests within and outside India.

The barrage when completed in 2012 is supposed to provide 1500 megawatts of hydel power to the Indian state of Assam but in return its going to bring about a major disaster for Bangladesh, practically contributing to the drying up of the 350 km long Surma and 110 km long Kushiara rivers which provide water to most of the north-eastern regions of Bangladesh.

The Tipaimukh barrage is going to seriously affect not only agriculture in large portions of Bangladesh, particularly in winter, but is also going to bring about negative ecological, climatic and environmental changes of vast areas in both Bangladesh and India. Bangladeshis, with our friends from environmentalist groups, must face this challenge and force the Indian government to stop constructing this Dam. We don’t want to see more destruction and suffering for the people of Bangladeshi, its economy and nature.

Time to take action! Help stop the construction of the Dam to save the 10 million people!

We need to PREVENT this and then work with the Indian, Nepalese and Bhutanese governments to prevent China from completing the Tsangpo/Brahmaputra/Jamuna river project. In the long run, ecological disasters know no bounds, political and otherwise. This is a great opportunity for BAL and BNP leaders to stop using real impending disasters for political gain, inform themselves and the masses about the facts, and unite in common cause. Unlikely. We must do it ourselves.

This is where the State of India lacks serious education, in environmentalism! And the Indian Government proves again and agian that they do not like living with it's neighbour peacefully! Thus contradicting the true meaning of Hinduism and Buddhism! I am disgusted by the Indian Government's action, narrow mindedness and short-sightedness! Depriving your neighbours of WATER? Shame on India!

I want India to want India built this Dam and kill thousands from my country. Why?

The BAL is continuously saying that there is no problem India building the dam and their experts will look in the environmental issue, if their is any. The so called "Shushil shomaj" and "budhdhijibi mohol" are also supporting the construction of this dam by remaining silent.

On the other hand, BNP could have done nothing to prevent India from building this dam even if they were in power. They are now making noise to stir up a political issue against BAL.

While BAL is always happy whatever India does, and BNP always opposes India, neither party thinks sincerely about our people, our environment and our country and do not have the guts to take such issues to international courts to preserve the right of 150 million people.

So, Go India. Build the dam.

Bangladesh government has asked the governments of India and China to release environmental impact studies with regards to Tipaimukhi and Tsangpo/Brahmaputra/Jamuna. No cooperation as expected even though both governments are obligated under International law as these projects are in clear violation of it.

Instead, they're offering our ignorant politicians a guided "fact finding" tour of 5 star hotels and whoremongering.

We need to take them to court in order to get those studies released. But in light of our economic and political relations with both nations, not to mention the power enjoyed by their dalals, that is unlikely unless we, the people raise hell in the press and elsewhere.

The Turag movement has already achieved quick success.

I want to know more about this. (before I raise my voice I want to be well informed)

could someone provide me with any kind of scientific study or report on the possible impact of this project ? any source will do. I see a lot of internet articles but none are exactly scientific, most of them are simply talking through the hat.
if this issue needs to be raised on the world stage the case has to be water tight.

thanks.

Zamir, bro, it's always a good idea to provide to informative resources in threads that need it. Bangladesh has a history of politicizing issues that inevitably transcend politics. The only way to avoid arousing such suspicions is by providing an informative intro of sorts BEFORE trying to people rally people to a common cause. The days of blind loyalty to politicians are long gone ...

Here's a little something on Tipaimukh:

Quote:
The Tipaimukh Hydroelectric Project is being constructed near the confluence of Barak and Tuivai rivers, in Manipur, India and within 100km of Bangladesh border. Costing Rs 6,351 crore ($1.35 billion) the 164 meter high dam will have a firm generation capacity of 401.25MW of electricity.

While Hydroelectric projects are typically considered greener than other power generation options in short term, it has significant long-term impact to the environment like changes in the ecosystem, destroying nearby settlements and changing habitat conditions of people, fish and wildlife. Especially in the densely populated countries like India and Bangladesh, where rivers are lifelines, projects like Tipaimukh will create adverse effect to a huge number of population and their habitats.

No wonder right from the start this project faced protests from potentially affected people in India, and from the downstream neighbor Bangladesh. The people of Manipur have been fighting legally to stop the project but have so far been unsuccessful. The Indian government is going ahead with the plan. The Sinlung Indigenous People Human Rights Organisation (SIPHRO) of India said that “the process for choosing it (the project premises) ignored both the indigenous people and the recommendations of the WCD (World Commission on Dams)”.

On something related AND NO LESS IMPORTANT, although the dakait BNP leadership and their shameless chamchas and razakar allies aren't interested in it, wonder why, because the Tsangpo/Brahmaputra/Jamuna project will literally finish off what Farakka started: -

Quote:
China plans to construct a dam at Yarlung Tsangpo point on the Brahmaputra River in Tibet province to divert 200 billion cubic metres of water annually to the Yellow River threatening a major ecological disaster in Bangladesh within the next few years.

Experts and environmentalists fear Bangladesh would turn into a desert in the near future as water flow of Brahmaputra-Jamuna river, which is about 60 per cent of the total water flow, will fall drastically if China builds the dam on the Brahmaputra.

According to morphologist Maminul Haque Sarker of Centre for Environmental and Geographic Information Services (CEGIS), one-third water flow of Brahmaputra-Jamuna would decline if the project is implemented.

“Around 15 to 20 small and medium rivers including Dhaleshwari, Shitalakkha and Balu will die,” he cautioned.

“Salinity normally increases if water flow in the rivers declines. Less flow of water will result in alarming increase of salinity in river water, badly affecting the world heritage site Sundarbans as well as Bhola, Barisal, Khulna and Chandpur, and even different places of Sylhet and Rajshahi divisions,” Sarker said adding saline water will also affect the fisheries and trees of the areas.

Although Chinese government claimed that the project is still at a conceptual stage, confidential sources confirmed that work of the project has already begun with the target to finish it in next five to seven years.

Mohammad Inamul Haque, former director general of Bangladesh Haor & Wetlands Development Board (BHWDB), said Yarlung-Tsangpo project is part of China’s long-term river interlinking project to divert water from south to north.

China wants to build the dam as water flow of Yellow River declined due to huge water demand of the people of both sides of the river, said renowned engineer Taqsem A Khan.

“Although China denies launching of the project work, we believe they will go ahead with its plan to divert water from south to north for irrigation in the vast stretches of land,” he said.

However, Bangladesh is yet to take any diplomatic initiative regarding the project. Even water ministry officials have no idea about the Chinese dam project.

India has already expressed concern, fearing similar effects in Assam and Arunachal provinces.

Experts suggested that Bangladesh create pressure on China as per a United Nations convention on Law of Non-Navigation Uses of International Watercourses, which disallows countries from barring natural flow of water of any international river.

As Brahmaputra is an international river, China cannot build dams blocking water flow without prior permissions of Bangladesh and India, they said.

“We should raise voices against the project at home and abroad immediately,” said the BHWDB director general.

Barrister Raihan Khalid, representative of Bangladesh Environmental Lawyers Association (Bela), said although Bangladesh is yet to ratify the UN convention it can exert pressure on China.

A group of retired Chinese officials first wrote about the idea to divert Brahmaputra water in a book titled ‘Tibet’s Water will Save China’ last year.

Bangladesh is already facing water crisis in the major rivers due to India’s Farakka barrage on the Padma. Some 17 rivers have already died and seven more are awaiting the same fate due to the barrage.

India is also planning to construct Tipaimukh dam on the upstream of Meghna River and initiate a river interlinking project that threatens to worsen the water crisis in Bangladesh.

Spread it to EVERYONE YOU KNOW!\

I dont know enough (about dams) to comment on this but there is small mistake in the above post .I checked on the location and it is about 120 Km from the nearest BD border.

Dams have always been controversial within India .Dont know enough to express my views on this, but how Dams in general have effected people's lives in developed countries could be a good case study on what we might see in India and BD.

This is one fight that us,people in general, would have to fight hard for.
The govt of Bangladesh, either BNP or AL, makes no difference and would do little.

We need to, rather we have to create such a massive campaign regarding the issue that the govt will be forced to act on it.

The strangest thing is that in the UK there around 500,000 Sylhetis living here, so we have the advantage to create a big media attention through demonstration next to the Parliament buildings, however the communities are divided in this issue which has become a political issue between AL and BNP. What we need is unity between both and see it as a natural issue, which correction will effect 50m people, then further effecting the whole of the country econimically. There is a demonstration to be held on Saturday front of the Indian embassy in London from 5PM, this is however organised by RESPECT, politically dividing.

thank you for these valuable informations, i believe people are really unaware of the greatness of the effect it will have to the region, ill-minded politicians cannot solve such issue which take a blind eye upon, the government should not be afraid against India, and should take this matter to possibly the International courts or address to the UN delegation boards.
