Now it looks more like Opera.
Well, it's been copying Opera from day 1, so no surprise there.

In fact, Opera 9.x trumps Firefox IMHO.
Just look at all these features.

This is my story in a nutshell.
I thought IE sucked too. That was WAY back. And then I switched to Opera in 2000. Opera was the first browser to provide tabbed browsing (among other innovative things), and I have been tabbing since then.
2/3 years later came newbie Firefox, a slick-looking Opera clone; I switched to Firefox, even though it bothered me that Firefox touted a lot of Opera's features as their own inventions. Nothing bother an Opera user more when a n00b firefox user tells them about the holy grail that is tabbed browsing.
Now Opera has trumped Firefox, so I have switched back to Opera.
Opera has always been the fastest, most secure and most web standard compliant all this time. And they always come up with cool, new stuff.
I dumped Opera temporarily because it was getting a little too feature heavy for my taste. Not any more. Fortunately, they have cut all the GUI fat in recent versions, making it my best choice again.

IE7 still lags behind Opera and FF.
But yes, I agree that for the casual user, FF serves as well as Opera.

IE7 is rubbish. The new interface sucks and it looks UGLY if you use windows classic theme.
Firefox 2.0 is more responsive and uses less memory than previous versions (memory usage was the only downside of Firefox in pre-2.0 days).

As long as I know, Opera is not free. or they have made it free? Last time I used opera was long time ago, and I needed a serial number to either install it or to enable all the features. how is it doing now?

Really? Most of the Opera users claim that Opera uses less memory than both IE and Firefox.

Well, my opera 9 is eating up a lot. And it *feels* like FF 1.5, my previous browser, used less memory. Maybe I need to run a controlled test to compare memory usage between the two.

Opera and FF are both good in terms of usability, but still have compatibility issues, which forces me to use IE ocassionally. Though I disagree above observations, Opera barely takes any more memory than IE or FF does on my PC. In fact, right now I have all 3 browsers running the same website and FF 2 is using the most amount of memory (25,656k) followed by Opera 9 (19,888 k) and IE 6 (19,568 k)... IE 7 sucks anyway so I uninstalled it.

Actually, it's the other way around. IE has been incompatible with web standards and letting users build websites that don't conform to them.

I am a bit ignorant about these browser software. Never used anything except IE which comes default with my laptop.
Now, it seems FF 2 is better than IE 7. Now can anyone tell me how can I install FF 2 ? Using the link Spitfire provided, I cannot find any install, download or setup button.

You would just have to browse little over there. Here is the install file. This is English-US version 2.0.

Compatibility stretches beyond W3C design standards. Opera has severe backwards compatibility issues with major web-based applications, rich-text editors and across other operating systems. The reason being newer versions tend go back to square one and make it even harder for developers to keep up or start from scratch with so called new or revised "standards". It's just inconsistency, at least from Opera I'd expect it more readily support existing web standards.

It seems that Opera has solved a lot of their problems with rich text editors.

What web applications are you talking about?

Mostly CMS/blog/forum and other content publishing applications that require use of advanced rich-text editing tools.
Opera 9 currently only supports basic text editors, that's even because they followed what FF has done. Though more powerful RTE like FCKeditor, which is used by many applications is still not supported. I followed this site from the link you gave me and it clearly shows the lack of RTE compatibility with Opera, even Netscape and Safari is doing better.
Opera also has rendering and other compatibility issues on its Mac counterpart.
It seems Opera's vigorous attempt at perfectionism is too problematic. It's trying to offer the user flexibility of everything under one hood, but neglecting the difficulty it sets developers to stay on top of maintenance. It's not always possible for sites to avoid buggy code, especially CMS-based sites which can be used by novice end-users with no regard for the latest "web standards". Opera simply assumes or "expects" things work with "Opera", instead of making their software more accessible and backwards compatible with existing setup and standards.
Ultimately, no browser is perfect. Opera has great features but it's still not the average user's "only" browser. FF is miles ahead in that race.
