Default Cricketer of the year, 2005-06

Today's New Age said BCCB has delayed the scheduled cricket night from tomorrow to some other day next month. Anyway, I am interested to know who is the cricketer BC members think as the favorites to win the award this year (April 2005- Aprill 2006).

My favorite is Ashraful for his performences in NatWest series and in home serieses against SL.

I don't want to start three/four more polls on best bowler, batsman, allrounder, emerging player, etc (though, I think admins should start a new section for all those polls), so I am giving my nominees here-

Batsman: Ashraful
Bowler: Rafique (who else it can be ?)
Emerging player : Shahriar Nafees
Allrounder: Do we have any ?

My choice is definitely Rafiqe. Might consider Ash but he is amazingly inconsistent despite having wild talent. Besides them some other players contributed well but its Rafiq who fought all the way through, he is a true fighter.

Muhammad Rafique no doubt.

EDIT : Habibul Bashar and Shahriar Nafees comes in mind too, also Rajin, Pilot before the Aussie Series but Rafique Mama beats them all by throwing his 150 % always for the team, we need other players to have his fighting spirit.

Analyzing the Babu bhai's data:

Ash: Scored above 30, out of total 34 innings = 9 innings (26.4%) (Poor)
Single digit scoring = 16 innings (47%)(unexceptable)
5 and below = 13 innings (38.2%) (very Poor)
Zero = 5 innings (14.7%)(pathetic)
Total centuries = 2 (5.8%)
Total fifties = 4 (11.7%)(disgraceful for internation stats as the main batsmen for the country)

Shariar Nafees: Scored above 30, out of total 29 innings = 11 innings (37.9%)
Single digit scoring = 8 innings (27%)
5 and below = 6 innings (20.6%)
Zero = 4 innings (13.79%)
Total centuries = 1 (3.4%)
Total fifties = 7 (24.1%)

H Bashar: Scored above 30, out of total 33 innings = 14 innings 42.42%)
Single digit scoring = 8 innings (24.2%)
5 and below = 5 innings (15.15%)
Zero = 2 innings (6%)
Total centuries = 0 (0%)
Total fifties = 8 (24.2%)

The evaluation is not for one or two match but for the entire year. Ash wasn't the only contributor in the win against Australia. With a whooping 47% single digit scoring he should never even be considered as a candidate to win the best batsmen award. If he gets any kind of "ushkani" from the board he will never try to fix his game and the nomination would only encourage him to do what he is doing now.

Bashar is more consistant than S. Nafees. As a senior member he should get the "Best Batsmen award". S. Nafees still need to curve his single digit scoring down in the years to come. Certainly he would win the "Emerging player award".

I know by stat, it should be Bashar definitley. But forget about statistics.

It got to be Bashar. Ashraful got enough for his match winning century. But we have to remember Bashar's contribution over the years. I know there are many many question against his captaincy limitation. But still, he is the man who has brought some respect for BD cricket team. I don't understand how people forget that.

Ash might have played a few good innings but he was not the only contributor in beating Aussies. HB and SN have batted reasonably well (at least according to average), but my vote goes to Rafique. I considered his consistent performance and fighting spirit.

When one player is to be chosen as the best cricketer, he is assessed in his specialized field of either batting or bowling (or could be all-rounder as SA's Kallis or England's Freddie) and my belief is, Rafiq fits in more as the best cricketer since his standard as a bowler with respective to international perspective in test cricket (ultimate area to judge/recognize a team's standard) stands taller than Bashar's/Ash's/S.Nafees's as batsman (nothing personal, Bashar is my favorite and I also like Talented Mr. Inconsistent Ash and the new sensation Nafees!)! It was Rafiq's long spell of relentless bowling that saw falling of good number of wickets in test cricket where it greatly helped Bangladesh in removing the blemish of tooth-less bowling in test cricket by making the International cricket arena (and also us) start believing that we could also scalp 10 wickets of the Giants within an innings (of course barring the 2nd test against Australia)!!

no contest ! MD rafique straight up. Simply because of the fact that he has performed consistently for the last few years and is the only hardcore fighter in the current team. Statistics will also support MD rafique.

my 2 cents:

2006 Unofficial CB Awards (following the April-March time criteria)

MVP (best overall player for bangladesh): Mohammad Rafique
Batsman of the Year: Shahriar Nafees and Habibul Bashar*
Bowler of the Year: Mohammad Rafique
All-rounder of the Year: Mohammad Rafique
Batting Rookie of the Year: Shahriar Nafees
Bowling Rookie of the Year: Shahadat Hossain
Comeback Player of the Year: Rajin Saleh**
12th Man of the Year: Alok Kapali***

* SN and bashar share batting award because statistically they are very close as cats_eye bhai's stats show. of course bashar was quite a bit more consistant, but SN should be rewarded for his big innings of which bashar had none.
** 'comeback player of the year' is an award for a player who was mostly out of the side due to injury or poor form and then came back with a bang.
*** '12th man' is like the NBA's '6th Man of the Year' award and for us represents the player outside the core XI who nonetheless had an impact and got some time. Kapali would have also gotten the comeback player award but rajin beat him to it.

Historically Speaking it looks like this, I reckon:

2005 Awards

MVP: Mohammad Ashraful
Batsman: Mohammad Ashraful
Bowler: Mohammad Rafique
All-rounder: Manjural Islam Rana
Rookie Batsman: Aftab Ahmed
Rookie Bowler: Nazmul Hossain
Comeback Player: Mashrafee bin Mortaza
12th Man: Khaled Mahmud

2004 Awards

MVP: Mohammad Rafique
Batsman: Habibul Bashar
Bowler: Mohammad Rafique
All-rounder: Mushfiqur Rahman
Rookie Batsman: Rajin Saleh
Rookie Bowler: Enamul Haque Jr.
Comeback player: Javed Omar
12th man: N/A
