That's because we are yet to make effective use of our biggest resource: our people.

Nice to know. The following survey was done in 1967 along the coastline and no action till today.

Quote:
All the seventeen deposits include 20.5 million tons of raw sand , which contains 4.4 million tons of heavy minerals (sp gr > 2.9). Only eight types of economically important heavy minerals, namely, ilmenite, magnetite, zircon , rutile , garnet, leucoxene, kyanite and monazite occur in these deposits. The total stock of these eight types of heavy minerals in these seventeen deposits is 1,761,000 tons.

Old news. I've been hearing since my childhood that we have uranium.

We are also supposed to have a huge reserve of oil, as is the talks on the street.

Anyway, who'se coming to get this uraniums ?
Reliance Mining or Sahara matribhumi ?
I know our ministers would be to shy to ask for profit sharing, apparently it is beyadobi to ask thy neighbors for using our resources.

^^ You think we, the people of Bangladesh, are the first ones to know ? Infact we are the last.

The only possible reason it came on the national daily is because the bhag-batoara is already completed on papers and now simply the scripted drama will take place,

Er....have y'all forgotten the Agreement with the Russians about the nuclear power plant in Rooppur? That was all over the news a few months back! Nuclear fission ki diyei korbei, bhaat diyei?

Just as a reminder: http://www.thefinancialexpress-bd.co...85Ml8xNTg4NzA=

I wonder what the Govt. will do with the water issue though, as the author of the article mentions.

^^ But ei fission mission accomplish korte to ar shob uranium chole jabe na ? Jabe ?
Amader 2 ta 1000 MW plant er jonno ar koto lagbe ar amader mojud ase koto ?
How much of it is recoverable and commercially viable ?

We receive about 1 Billion cbm of sediments each year.

Once the extraction begins at some point, I see corrupt politicians and the bureaucrats regardless of party affiliation making millions but the nation as a whole not benefiting as much as we'd like to hope. Same old jazz and exasperatingly mitigated progress.

Radioactive Uranium, the size of your fist can power a nuclear submarine for 25 years, never needing to refuel. Nuclear is the future of energy....

Very much true. BAEC bought few kg of Uranium in 1963 and running a prototype nuclear reactor till now. 2/3 KG of fusion-able material will run a 1000 MW power plant for more than a year.

We receive about 1 Billion cbm of sediments each year.
According to this [PDF], VVER-1000 type reactor needs about 525kg enriched uranium with 5-6 year fuel cycle. So with about 4-5% efficiency that would be about 12 tons of uranium per year? (math is not always my strongest suite, so feel free to correct me)

I believe the deal with the russians was that they will also provide the uranium fuel (sell it to us) and the Depleted uranium will be taken back by the russians for reprocessing. There are about 10 countries in the world who has the ability to do reprocessing of the spent fuel. Highly toxic, expensive and complicated.

From my limited knowledge I understand that uranium from mines (in the form of yellow cake) needs go through, refining, purifying and then turning them in to fuel pellets; before it can be used on a nuclear reactor. Thats like creating whole separate highly complicated and expensive industries in order to turn them in to nuclear fuels to be able to use them in our nuclear powerplant. That seems highly in-efficient and unlikely, not to mention international regulatory oversight, assuming we can get permission to refine uranium. Just look at whats going on in Iran. For just 2GW nuclear power plant, I doubt we are going to go through that hassle. Maybe if we make 4-5 five of these in near future then it might seem reasonable.

So My guess would be that is has absolutely no relation to the nuclear power plant, and even if we ever get to mining uranium yellow cake, we probably won't be using it on our on power plants. We will probably be just selling them in the wholesale market to countries who can process them.

Besides uranium is really not that rare, its just that there are not enough demand for it and countries are not using their full resources to mine them. So the prices are artificially inflated. Just like Diamond, which is also not rare; just artificially inflated.

Ofcourse, someone who knows their nuclear stuff feel free to correct me if you like.

Its not the same as saying:

"Radioactive Uranium, the size of your fist can power a nuclear submarine for 25 years, never needing to refuel."

Looks like he got the 25 year number from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nuclear_submarine.

The citation is gives (http://www.naval-technology.com/projects/astute/) says nothing about 25 years life cycle. So it would seem the citation is wrong?

Now looking for the "Radioactive Uranium, the size of your fist" reference.

Edit: just to add to that about nuclear submarines and its comparison to civilian nuclear power plant. The nuclear submarines use uraniums that has been enriched to weapon's grade level with ~90%, as opposed to commercial power plants which are usually ~5% enriched uranium. To top it off nuclear reactor design in submarines are top secret stuff and small scale (300-400MW) and works nothing like civilian power plants. So I would say the comparison is not an appropriate.

Also looking for reference on "2/3 KG of fusion-able material will run a 1000 MW power plant for more than a year".

Don't get me wrong, I am interested in learning. Preferably with good source when seeing crazy numbers.

Thanks for your effort Blah. You make the picture a little more clearer for us Uranium 101s.
The PA report is quite vague and doesn't really tell much beside "we have uranium", literally.
Waiting for Sagar bhai's expert opinion, though I'm not sure whether he is allowed to talk in the subject matter in depth, as he is a Govt employee and might have restrictions.
