The name of Bangabandhu National Stadium (BNS) came up as a possible venue for the ICC World Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 during a preparatory meeting held at the conference room of the Youth and Sports Ministry yesterday. The mega event will take place in Bangladesh from April 1 to 20 in 2014 where 16 men's teams and 10 women's teams (subject to ICC's approval) will participate. “It was a preparatory meeting and all the discussions were just in preliminary stages. The BNS name came in discussion as possible venue but all of this will be subject to the concerned authorities. Everything came up as a proposal,” informed BCB acting CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury, who attended the meeting on behalf of the board. He said that the Cox's Bazar venue has been proposed to host all the women's matches considering the accommodation and other facilities. The names of Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Fatullah Cricket Stadium, Zahur Ahmed Chowdhury Stadium in Chittagong, Sylhet Divisional Stadium and Sheikh Abu Naser Stadium in Khulna has been discussed as possible venues for the tournament. State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarkar, who presided over the meeting, asked the meeting whether it can be possible to consider Gopalganj and Rajshahi as venues too.

No, no, no. If they decide to go for BNS than plan for another brand new stadium will fall through the crack. This might be our only chance of getting a brand new stadium. We will need at least 4 stadium the T20 world cup. We already have Mirpur, and CTG, and than they started doing construction at the one in Sylhet. Whatever happened to the talk about having a new stadium at Cox Bazar? We are already half way into 2012, if we don't start planning for this kind of thing right now, we will run into the same issue as we did during the World Cup 2011.

I agree with Roman bhai, BNS for the opening ceremony but that's it.

about half a dozen stadiums will be needed(source: NewAge)..so even BNS is to hold matches, there will be new stadiums outside DHK & CTG

So, we have a venue at Cox's Bazar. But didn't understand the Gopalganj thing.... From where did it pop up?? Do they have a stadium or proposing to build?? Then why at Gopalganj ?? Gopal...??

'BNS should not host cricket'

Newly re-elected Bangladesh Football Federation (BFF) president Kazi Salahuddin said yesterday that the Bangabandhu National Stadium should not be considered as one of the possible venues for the 2014 ICC World Twenty20 in Bangladesh.

“Officially, I know nothing about the BNS, but the organsiers should not think of cricket at the BNS, rather they should think of those venues which were made for cricket and hosting matches of the national cricket league and international matches,” Salahuddin told reporters at his office yesterday.

Salahuddin had initially refused to make any comments until he gets the official statement but he finally relented after repeated requests from the pressmen.

Vice-president elect Abdus Salam Murshedy also said that they were not officially informed about using the BNS for cricket and they would meet the Prime Minister to make her understand the importance of BNS for football.

The name of BNS came up as a possible venue for the Twenty20 Bangladesh 2014 during a preparatory meeting at the Youth and Sports Ministry on Wednesday.

“The BNS is very important for football and hosting cricket at the same venue will halt the progress of football as we have no alternative venue like cricket and the venue we have in Kamalapur is more like a half stadium which is always not appropriate for football,” said Salahuddin who was re-elected BFF president two days ago.

Previously, the BNS had hosted the opening ceremony of the ICC World Cup in February 2011 and due to the renovation and preparation of the opening ceremony at the premium venue, football remained suspended for more than six months at the BNS. This led to the BFF subsequently cancelling the Super Cup following the unwillingness of the sponsor to host it at the Kamalapur Stadium.

The ICC World Twenty20 Cup is scheduled to be staged in Bangladesh from April 1 to 20 in 2014.

Apart from the issue of BNS, Kazi Salahuddin told reporters about his plan regarding district football after being re-elected for another four years.

“The district football league will start by August-September,” Salahuddin said. “However it will be a challenge for me and the BFF to start the league at the district level as well as manage sponsors.”

The BFF boss also informed that he would have to spend a lot of time in the next four weeks to ensure funding as acute financial crisis was the main setback for the football governing body.

Terming the just concluded election as a hard one, Salahuddin said that he had no knowledge of the conspiracy against Badal Roy.

Roy on Wednesday alleged that a group conspired against him during the elections in an effort to make him lose and thus he is likely to opt to be inactive in the newly formed executive committee.

“Every individual has his own opinion, thinking and style and I am not going to interfere in it,” said Salahuddin.

In another move, the start of the second leg of the Grameenphone Bangladesh League has been deferred by five days in the face of demand made by six clubs including Brothers Union as all those clubs are not ready to play at the moment following their participation in the BFF elections.

After a meeting with the club representatives, the league committee decided to resume the league from May 10 and extended the deadline of the mid-term players' transfer window till May 9 which was supposed to close yesterday.

The meeting also decided to ready the venue in Kamalapur as an alternative solution to the ongoing league and complete the fifth edition of the league by July 10.

চাহিদাটা সময়োপযোগী, দাবিটাও পুরনো_ শুধু তা নিয়ে সরকারি উদ্যোগটাই নতুন। দেশে আন্তর্জাতিক মানের একটি আধুনিক ক্রিকেট স্টেডিয়াম নির্মাণের খবরটি তাই অনেককেই আশা দেখাচ্ছে। তবে মানিকগঞ্জবাসীকে তা বোধহয় একটু বাড়তি আনন্দ দিচ্ছে। কেননা ঢাকার অদূরে এ জেলা শহরেই দেশের নতুন আরেকটি আন্তর্জাতিক মানের ক্রিকেট স্টেডিয়াম নির্মিত হতে যাচ্ছে। এরই মধ্যে ১১ একরের একটি প্রস্তাবিত জায়গা দেখে জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদ থেকে বাংলাদেশ ক্রিকেট বোর্ডকে চিঠি দেওয়া হয়েছে। মানিকগঞ্জ শহর থেকে দুই কিলোমিটার দূরে আরিচা মহাসড়কের পাশে একটি জায়গা নির্বাচন করা হয়েছে। বিসিবি থেকে আগামী সপ্তাহেই একটি প্রতিনিধি দল সেটা দেখতে যাবে এবং আন্তর্জাতিক ভেন্যুর সব চাহিদা অনুযায়ী আনুষঙ্গিক ব্যাপারগুলো পর্যবেক্ষণ করবে। বিসিবির সবুজ সংকেত পেলেই জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদ দেশের ষষ্ঠ আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেট ভেন্যু নির্মাণের কাজ হাতে নেবে। 'জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদ থেকে একটা চিঠি পেয়েছি আমরা। এখন তাদের প্রস্তাবিত সে জায়গায় গিয়ে আইসিসির নিয়ম অনুযায়ী কিছু ব্যাপার পর্যবেক্ষণ করতে হবে।' বিসিবির গ্রাউন্ডস অ্যান্ড ফ্যাসিলিটিজের ন্যাশনাল ম্যানেজার সৈয়দ আবদুল বাতেন আশাবাদী, কাজ হাতে নিলে আড়াই-তিন বছরের মধ্যেই নতুন একটি স্টেডিয়াম নির্মাণ করা সম্ভব হবে। তবে সেটা ২০১৪ টি২০ বিশ্বকাপের আগে কখনোই সম্ভব নয়।
বিশ্বকাপের পর থেকেই আয়োজক হিসেবে বাংলাদেশের নাম ক্রিকেট বিশ্বে ছড়িয়ে পড়েছে। ক্রিকেটের সর্বোচ্চ নিয়ামক সংস্থা আইসিসি অনেকটা আস্থা রেখেই তাই একটির পর একটি বড় আসর বাংলাদেশে আয়োজন করার অনুমতি দিচ্ছে। কিন্তু আয়োজনের জন্য যথেষ্ট মাঠ কখনোই ছিল না, সে কারণেই ঢাকার অদূরে মানিকগঞ্জে একটি আন্তর্জাতিক মানের ক্রিকেট স্টেডিয়াম তৈরির প্রস্তুতি চলছে। গেল ১৮ জানুয়ারি প্রধানমন্ত্রী শেখ হাসিনা মানিকগঞ্জ সফরে গিয়ে একটি আধুনিক স্টেডিয়াম নির্মাণের প্রতিশ্রুতি দেন। তারপরই জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদ থেকে মানিকগঞ্জ শহরের একটু দূরে আরিচা মহাসড়কের দক্ষিণ পাশে একটি জায়গা নির্বাচন করা হয়। যেখানে ১১ দশমিক ১ একরের মধ্যে সরকারি খাস জমি রয়েছে ৪ দশমিক ৮২ একর, ব্যক্তিমালিকানাধ� �ন জমির পরিমাণ ৬ দশমিক ১৯ একর। কিন্তু ওই জমির মধ্যে কমপক্ষে ২ দশমিক ৭৫ একর ডোবা রয়েছে। যার গভীরতা প্রায় ১৬ ফুট, সেখানে মাটি ভরাট করে তবেই স্টেডিয়াম নির্মাণ সম্ভব। প্রস্তাবিত জমিটি মহাসড়ক থেকে ৮ ফুট নিচু। জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদের দুশ্চিন্তা এখানেই। নিচু জায়গাটি মাটি ভরাট করতে অনেক খরচ পড়ে যাবে, সে কারণেই বিসিবির কাছে পরামর্শ চেয়েছে জাতীয় ক্রীড়া পরিষদের পরিচালক আবদুর রহমান।
এখন বিসিবি প্রতিনিধি দল সেখানে গিয়ে মাটি পরীক্ষা ছাড়াও, জায়গাটির পরিধি পর্যবেক্ষণ করবে। এ ছাড়া সেখানকার বিদ্যুৎ ও পানির লাইন, মাটির নিচে পানির গভীরতা পরীক্ষা করবে বিসিবির বিশেষজ্ঞ দল। 'প্রথমে আমরা মাঠের সাইজ দেখব, তারপর সেখানকার মাটি ও মাটির নিচে পানির লেভেল পরীক্ষা করা হবে। সেখানে কয়টি পিচ তৈরি সম্ভব, স্টেডিয়ামের বাইরে কতটা জায়গা ছাড়া সম্ভব_ এগুলোও পর্যবেক্ষণ করে দেখা হবে। এ ছাড়া আইসিসিরি নিয়ম মেনে আনুষঙ্গিক আবাসন আর যাতায়াত ব্যবস্থা দেখা হবে।' সৈয়দ আবদুল বাতেন মনে করেন, ঢাকার বাইরে মানিকগঞ্জে একটি আধুনিক স্টেডিয়াম নির্মাণের যথেষ্ট সম্ভাবনা রয়েছে।
ঢাকার মিরপুর শেরেবাংলা স্টেডিয়াম ছাড়া নারায়ণগঞ্জের ফতুল্লায় একটি আন্তর্জাতিক ক্রিকেট ভেন্যু রয়েছে। ঢাকার বাইরে চট্টগ্রাম, বগুড়া আর খুলনায় আন্তর্জাতিক স্টেডিয়াম রয়েছে। কিন্তু চট্টগ্রাম বাদে খুলনা আর বগুড়ায় অনেক বছর হলো কোনো ম্যাচ আয়োজন করতে পারেনি বিসিবি। দুটি শহরের বিমানবন্দর আর আবাসন ব্যবস্থা নিয়ে বিদেশি দলগুলোর আপত্তি আছে বলে অনেক সময় যুক্তি দেওয়া হয়েছে। এ অবস্থায় মানিকগঞ্জে আরও একটি নতুন স্টেডিয়াম কতটা কার্যকর হবে? উত্তর দিতে গিয়ে বিসিবির এক ঊধ্বর্তন কর্মকতা ভবিষ্যৎ পরিকল্পনার কথাই শোনালেন। 'ঢাকা থেকে মানিকগঞ্জ সড়কপথে এক ঘণ্টার মতো সময় লাগে। তা ছাড়া স্টেডিয়ামটি নির্মাণ হলে সেখানে আবাসন ব্যবস্থাও উন্নত হয়ে যাবে। ঢাকার ওপর ক্রিকেটের চাপ কমাতেই আশপাশে স্টেডিয়াম নির্মাণের ওপর জোর দেওয়া হয়েছে।' বিসিবির ওই কর্তা আশাবাদী, নতুন স্টেডিয়াম হলে আগামীতে বড় আসরগুলো আরও সুন্দরভাবে আয়োজন করতে পারবে বাংলাদেশ।
