Default Lack Of Foreign Coaches in BPL

Dav Whatmore and Stuart Law are the only two foreign coaches in BPL this season.

Other 5 franchises seem to be satisfied with local coaches. Mohammad Salahuddin, Sarwar Imran are understandable-both veteran coaches. Khaled Mahmud, Mizanur Rahman (Former Under 19 Coach), Javed Omar (Surprise, surprise) are the others. Notable local coaches missing-Khaled Mashud, Aminul Islam.

Now in franchise competitions around the world, teams usually opt for experienced well established names. In IPL, 7 out of the 8 coaches are foreign and at that the biggest names. Most IPL teams also have big name assistant coaches, fitness coaches, batting/bowling/fielding coaches. Even PSL has a fair share of foreign staff.

So the question is, do BPL franchise owners underestimate the importance of employing proper coaches? Do they think coach is unimportant so they dont want to spend on the position? Or is it that they only care about name and fame, and not results.

No disrespect to our local coaches, but they are still well behind in all aspects of the game. Presence of Whatmore or Law or Graham Ford (Last Edition) gives rare opportunity for the younger, domestic based players to be taught by some of the best minds in cricket. Young Indian cricketers pick up a lot from the foreign coaches/players they work with.

Or could it be that coaches really dont matter much for such a short tournament where match preparation is more tactical than skills oriented?

Thoughts?

As always I agree with you. Looks like we have similar thoughts.

Coaching is a very important aspect of any format of the game. A good coach can find out the true potential of a player like Haturi has done. Do you think any former coaches were able to get the best out of Mash, Riad, Sabbir the way Haturi has? No

A world class coach is a world class coach. Even before the BPL started I am absolutely hating everything about the team's themselves. No, the teams look professional, the schedule looks good, this time broadcast quality will be improving significantly as per promise.

But it will not improve our cricket if we keep investing in the wrong areas. Why are every team trying to simply save money?

Each team should have a well qualified coach with significant experience and each team should have a good number of international stars.

Some folks will come and say "XYZ are good players who needs others". Do you really think our skill will improve if we play against and with the likes of Jamshed and Junaid who have lost their form, some English players I have never heard off(I was looking for Willey, Billings and Roy). Someone like Hafeez, RTD, KOB, Madakadza, Taylor who have bucket loads of experience aren't picked just because teams are too busy saving money.

And don't tell me coaching staff for a 5 week period doesn't matter. It does for our next set of players.

Khaled Mahmud and Belim as coach? Lol

Maybe they feel it's time to develop local coaches
...

I don't agree with it though, just saying that may be the thinking... Or just saving money

Developing local coaches should be done by allowing them to coach local teams in NCL, BCL and ofcourse DPL. Not in BPL. BPL is an international standard tournament and we know this is not the platform to "develop" skills.

Were they not hired or did they no more than those two coaches apply? How many or did apply? Can't just hire foreign coaches if they are worse than locals.

Would like to see who they turned down first

Among the local coaches worth developing Khaled Mashud was a good candidate-not chosen. Javed Omar Belim is quite a surprising choice, maybe Afridi will run the show. Last years champions (Who are loaded with cash) opting for an Under 19 coach is also quite a shocker.

Maybe some of the franchise owners dont quite understand the importance.

Newcomers Khulna Titans though didnt waste time-they opted for experience of Stuart Law. They are owned by Gemcon who have been involved in sports administration for a while.

These days its easier hiring coaches for a 45 day tournament like BPL than for national team. And a lot of money is involved as well. I think any franchise can get 15-20 candidates by simply posting a tweet these days. I can name so many who would jump at the opportunity

^^ We all know which coach would slide in the DM first

But still would like to see a full list of applicants. May be the security concerns didn't encourage them to apply?

Well its a blessing in disguise for the local coaches. Maybe this will help BD cricket these local coaches getting top jobs of the best league of the land. This will improve them and hence more coaches to go around helping develope domestic players.

That is a slow process and it only yield slow results. BPL is not meant to develop coaches, but the players.

These other coaches can work as assistant. Gazi and Imran are qualified, but the others? LOL

Don't have enough faith in Mizanur Rahman, Khaled Mahmud and Javed Omar Belim

it might be the cost issue. IPL franchises buget >>> BPL franchise budget.

They can get 10 Javed Omars for one foreign coach.

Dillu, he didn't get the email or an invite. Plus Ashraful, his captain, is not playing.

My thought is these type of Tamasha league don't need ANY coaches. Well experienced and COMMITTED captain is good enough to guide the team and strategize the plot. Teams do need video analyzing person.

Good coaches will bring results even if it is 45 days. I reckon the coaches will spend some time in the nets with players in this one and half months. And so much more to learn from a Whatmore than Javed Omar Belim.

But you may be right also. Sometimes a very good captain is more important for this type of event than a high profile coach. But then again how many good captains do we have in the teams.

With more money will come more foreign coaches and better foreign players.
Also the reputation plays its part another successful year like last year,no real controvercy then it will build itself, like the Big Bash has done.

The last year had no issue whatsoever, but last time there were 4 overseas coaches, 2 quality local coaches.

This team its different. I am not sure whether its to save money but if it was then it would be pathetic. BCB should look into the matter and urge teams to invest in better team management and foreign players. However, the ironic part is, CoV and DD who has spent the most money in this year are the ones who have local coaches - Mahmud and Mizanur. Why not buy one foreign player less and perhaps get an international coach?

MHRAm the domestic leagues of 9 out of 10 sides is in play, and I guess those players still want 2 play tests, and soon 4 series will be on,thats 8 sides.
Novermber is maybe not the best time 2 play BPL,maybe March would be better.
April for IPL is the best time for everyone, their timing apart from the money insures they will get most available players.

Players prefer to play in T20 leagues than domestic competitions in their own country.

There is the matter of money, competitiveness with high profile players and the matches being televised. Players also love to play infront of massive crowds. We can't host it during March because that is the month during which world cup, 50 over or T20 takes place. That is the only window BPL has, NOVEMBER, and this will basically become permanent. For example, PSL will have issues during 2019 with the world cup.

Good point on Pakistan.
Um England are free apart from internationals, they play the most fixtures, their A squad are training in Sharjah I think,Australia most of them play domestic cricket,India do not allow their players 2 play other leagues and they have a full callendner, like England.
So thats 3 leading nations you have little from.
Other nations if they not playing domestic cricket, their is also issues of NOcS' from Test nations.

English county players, WI players and SL, Pak domestic players are our options. So it doesn't matter who plays who, BPL always get a good set of players.
