Pre-match talk from Shahriar Nafees -

Quote:
“When we left Bangladesh (for CWC 2007) we wanted to reach the second round. We have worked hard and met our target. We had a bad game against New Zealand, the Australia match was reduced to 20/20 and was not a full game. Against South Africa we did not score the runs.”

Asked about the need to win the toss as “it has been an odd pitch” at the Kensington Oval, Shariar said “It would good if we win the toss. This pitch has been a bit bowler friendly in the morning but if the opposition win the toss (and put us in to bat) we have to bat well.”

“The pitch here has been a bit dry, and (against England) there was a bit of turn which helped our bowlers.” He then re-emphasised “We have to maintain our batting, bowling and fielding.”

Asked if he had seen Australia's emphatic win over Ireland, he replied “ Australia played tremendous cricket. After six good games, you can have a bad game.”

“Ireland is playing well as a team. They are putting things together and coming up good. Most of their batsmen are in a good patch now.”

As for Bangladesh, Shariar feels ”We have played very good cricket for the last year. We need to improve. We are improving. We need to improve in the next few days so we can beat one of the top teams in the world.”

Nafees & Mashrafe should be rested & Take Javed & Shahdat instead .

Mashrafe is not a good bowler anymore as he's got only 6 wickets so far ......

"I'm not putting any pressure on the players," said Bashar when asked how important this match was for his side. "We've already had a very good World Cup. We'll just go out there and enjoy it. Two games remain and we want to go home in a good mood." - my italics.

That is defeatist talk. No, Bashar, there are 4 games left still. Until the 4th place is decided that is how it is.

As I mentioned an another thread, I reckon that BD should be treating this as a sudden-death match, which it is. They should win if they play at their best, but they should by no means underestimate the Paddies "just because they're an Associate and not a Test nation".

Though I'm glad to see that some fans (*cough* Outswinger *cough*) are very confident of success. I'm not this confident when OZ play, I'll tell you that much. :p

Default Ireland Set To Recall Botha For Bangladesh Test

World Cup debutants Ireland are hoping to recall all-rounder Andre Botha for Sunday's Super Eights match against Bangladesh.

Botha, 31, strained his left hamstring playing touch rugby in a practice session and has since had to sit out matches against New Zealand and Australia, who crushed Ireland by nine-wickets on Friday after bowling them out for 91.

"We are very keen that he does play," Ireland coach Adrian Birrell told Reuters on Saturday. "We are going to make a decision in the morning.

"If he makes it he would strengthen our batting and he has been our best bowler for some time so we would very much like him to play in this match."

The mostly amateur Ireland team unexpectedly qualified for the second stage after a shock win over Pakistan but they remain rooted to the bottom of the Super Eights standings after four successive defeats.

But they feel the contest against Bangladesh is the one Super Eights match they could win, even though the sub-continent side will be favourites for the match after their stunning 67-run win over South Africa last week.

Botha's presence as a middle-order batsman and a reliable seam bowler would help their cause. He claimed two wickets for five runs from eight overs in the win over Pakistan.

"It's obviously our biggest game and one which we feel we are capable of winning but we must also make sure that Andre can get through the game," added Birrell.

Ireland's final game will be against Sri Lanka in Grenada on Wednesday.

Bashar's take on the match-

Quote:
"We've seen Ireland's games on TV," said Bangladesh captain Habibul Bashar. "They're not a bad team at all. They have some good batsmen and their pacemen are fine."

Just like England's Michael Vaughan, Habibul is a captain under pressure, having managed just 61 runs in six innings during the tournament.

"I am frustrated by my own batting performance, it hasn't helped the team and I have two matches to do something about it," Habibul said.

Default Irish face Bangladesh spin threat

Ireland will treat Sunday's match with Bangladesh as their own World Cup final as they look to pick up their first points of the Super 8 phase.

Despite Bangladesh's wins over India and South Africa, the inconsistency of their batting presents Ireland with a chance of victory.
"When we sat down to look at the matches, we thought this was one game we can potentially win.
"We've got to turn it around and be up for it," said skipper Trent Johnston.
Ireland's confidence took a knock when they were bowled out for 91 by Cup holders Australia on Friday. But Bangladesh do not posses anyone with the speed of Shaun Tait, or the nagging accuracy of Glenn McGrath and Stuart Clark.

The challenge for the Irish is to find a way to thrive against an attack featuring three left-arm spinners - Mohammad Rafique, Abdur Razzak and Saqibul Hasan - who had combined figures of 4-82 from 26 overs in their last game against England.
"This will be a different sort of challenge," said Johnston.
"Bangladesh have quality spinners and we have been squeezed by spinners in the middle overs so it's one area we have to guard against. We will do our best to counter them and see what happens." Ireland's shock victory over Pakistan during the first round brought them worldwide attention and they are eager to produce at least one more inspired performance to reward the supporters who have followed them around the Caribbean.

"We don't want to disappoint ourselves and the Irish fans who have come here to watch these matches. We want to do what we did in Jamaica and send them home happy," Johnston added.
Spinner Kyle McCallam admitted the team have been overwhelmed by the level of support they have received in the tournament, both at the grounds and from back home in the emerald isle.
"It was absolutely brilliant. There are congratulatory messages, cards of well done and good luck for the match against Bangladesh which is our World Cup final.
"I have been playing cricket for 11 years. It's a minority sport but what we have achieved in this World Cup is a great credit to Irish cricket and what it will do for Ireland cricket in the next 10 years is phenomenal."
The semi-finals may only a remote possibility for Bangladesh, but if they can beat the Irish and West Indies they could certainly finish fifth in the Super 8 table which would represent a tremendous performance. "This is the most exciting period in Bangladesh cricket. We are focused for our last two games and hope to win both of them to finish our best World Cup ever in a befitting manner," said captain Habibul Bashar.

He described Ireland as "dangerous" opponents but believes the combination of Bangladesh's youthful batting line-up and spin-oriented bowling will tilt things in their favour. "Our spinners have bowled well in all conditions - they can even deliver on green tops," Bashar added.
