Learning how to win
This was a match that Bangladesh probably would win in the next world cup. It takes a team some time to learn winning. They showed courage and grit under fire both when batting and bowling, but their inexperience showed as well. Bangladeshi batsmen still cannot handle fast, bouncy wickets, and they failed to adjust to the adverse conditions, Saqibul being the only exception. (Bangladesh should build at least one fast, bouncy pitch.) Some wickets were lost to nearly unplayable balls. But, most fell because of inadvisable strokes, especially given the conditions. A little patience, like Saqibul showed, would have been worth between 30-60 runs. I am pretty sure that Bangladesh would have won if they scored 175+.
The spinners bowled great, as always, by maintaining immaculate line and length, but we lack an attacking spinner. After the 6th wicket fell, we needed wickets. Runs slowed down to a trickle, but our bowlers failed to take any wicket. I am not asking for a Murali (not that I will complain if we get one!), but we need to develop 1-2 spinners who will attack the stamps. This will help us in test matches as well. A leg spinner with a good googly will be ideal.
Shoaib Akhtar became a much more dangerous bowler after he concentrated on line, length, and subtle variation of speed, rather than trying to always bowl in the high 90's (in mph, high 150's in kph). I am convinced that what worked with Rawalpindi Express will work at least as well with Norail Express.
Finally, let's win our final two matches and end this WC in a positive note. Bangladesh can beat West Indies; they need to contain Lara, Gayle, and Chanderpaul. We should not take Ireland lightly. That is how Pakistan lost against them. Ireland has 2-3 very dangerous players.
