Default ICC World T20 2010 News Thread

Lets gather all T20 news here, there are too many posts on T20 WC....

--------------
Bangladesh target Pakistan upset

Bangladesh's captain and coach, Shakib Al Hasan and Jamie Siddons, are targeting a victory against Pakistan in their opening game of the ICC World Twenty20 on May 1.

"I think there is a possibility for us to beat Pakistan because, at the moment, Pakistan cricket is unsettled with different kinds of crisis and injury problems," Shakib said in Mirpur, prior to the team's departure. "So we have to do something in the first match if we want to play the second round, but that doesn't mean we play bad cricket against other group opponents Australia."

Siddons also felt Pakistan was Bangladesh's best chance but said they would have to play sharp cricket nonetheless. "Both Pakistan and Australia are tough opponents but realistically we have a chance against Pakistan but in that case we need to play well," he said. "The preparation is good and I must say it was much better than the last occasion. The players got the opportunity to play two tournaments - PCL and NCL - recently, which is really good. Some players missed out on runs but I think the wicket was low and slow. But definitely the boys will get consistent pace while playing in Barbados."

Bangladesh had a poor World Twenty20 in England in 2009, getting eliminated in the first round after losing group matches to India and Ireland. Shakib, however, was also pleased with his team's preparation this time. "Nothing could have been better than playing matches before any tournament. I think our preparation is good this time and most importantly we have been playing good cricket for last few months and hope it will continue in West Indies and as well as in the England tour."

Australia consider T20 pace quartet

Quote:
Brett Lee's return to the squad means Australia can lay claim to the quickest quartet in the game - and possibly of all-time. Life was already extremely nervous for the batsmen who had to face Shaun Tait, who cracked the 160kph barrier in February, Dirk Nannes and Mitchell Johnson over the past two months. Now Lee is on the road back after elbow and finger injuries and will add some more fear if he can approach his peak.

But could all four pacemen squeeze into the same Twenty20 side? "You betcha we can," the coach Tim Nielsen told Cricinfo. "Especially against Bangladesh in Barbados [on May 5]."

The Australians believe the Kensington Oval pitch is the only one in the Caribbean that won't be low and slow. "Our past experience there shows the ball does carry and bounce a bit," Nielsen said. "If it's fizzing through, we'll certainly consider four quicks, no doubt, as long as they're all bowling well."

Lee is the main concern after missing the entire home season due to a severe elbow problem and breaking his right thumb four IPL matches into his comeback. He was expensive in those games, giving away 149 runs in 14.3 overs, but feels confident and won't let a sore finger interrupt his international duties.

Wet weather during the pre-tournament camp in Brisbane also restricted Lee's preparation, but Nielsen indicated the 33-year-old was likely to be used in the warm-up matches in St Lucia on Tuesday and Thursday. "The only thing with Brett is he hasn't had a huge amount of competitive bowling, just through these unfortunate injuries," he said. "That's where the two practice games and the lead-up time we have in the West Indies will help him."

Nannes managed nine of the 14 IPL league matches with Delhi while Tait appeared in eight, leaving him a little short of work. Johnson was looking relaxed and cheerful this week after his holiday, which included spending six hours in a tattooist's chair to gain an intricate new design on his right arm. He was one of the eight Australians fine-tuning in Queensland before they left for the Caribbean on Friday.

Australia were knocked out of the previous World Twenty20 in England in the first round and Nielsen will speak to the group about the importance of starting well in the two-week event. He will also look to the batch of players who appeared in the IPL to provide some match toughness and tips.

"They'll help, for certain," he said. "We'd like to think both Husseys, White, Warner and Nannes will play a big role for us."

It will be the first major tournament in charge for Michael Clarke and the side is attempting to eliminate the wobbles that have left them trying to catch up in the shortest form of the game. However, they enter the competition with a strong recent record of four wins and a tie, which eventually ended in a Super Over success against New Zealand.

"We had a poor Twenty20 World Cup last year, there's no doubt about that," Nielsen said. "I remember saying the night before the first game we were as ready to go as we could be and we felt really good about it.

"This time we have a new captain so there are a few new ideas in the group, and a few new players, which is exciting. We're just growing with the game. At international level we're probably the group that plays the least as a team in Twenty20. But we're gelling better and we're looking at having another go at it in the West Indies."

Afridi charged up for title defence

Quote:
Shahid Afridi, the Pakistan captain, has said his team is ready "tactically and technically" to defend their ICC World Twenty20 title in the West Indies from April 30. Following the penalties handed out by the PCB for breaches of discipline in Australia, Afridi also said it was his "mission as captain, with the support of players and team management, to keep the team away from any controversy."

Most of the Pakistan squad left for the Caribbean from Lahore on Saturday via Dubai and London. Mohammad Asif will fly directly to London because he is not allowed to enter the UAE, while Mohammad Sami will reach the West Indies from New York, because he does not have a British visa. Pakistan also survived a fitness scare over wicketkeeper Kamran Akmal, who was unwell but passed fitness tests on Friday.

Pakistan's cricketers had a rigourous training camp as preparation for the World Twenty20 and Afridi singled out fielding as a crucial area in the tournament. "We are fully equipped to face the challenges in the West Indies," Afridi said. "I have a well balanced team in batting and bowling, and we have to further lift the standard of fielding. Fielding is crucial in this fastest version of the game and a lot of hard work was done to raise the standard."

Afridi dismissed talk of Pakistan being light in batting and also emphasised the importance of spin on pitches that could aid slower bowlers. "We have got a lot of firepower in our batting. We have the experienced Misbah-ul-Haq, Abdul Razzaq, young Umar Akmal, Khalid Latif and Salman Butt. As we expect spinning tracks, we have good options in Saeed Ajmal, Mohammad Hafeez and I. In the pace department we have Mohammad Aamer, Mohammad Sami, Mohammad Asif and Abdul Razzaq."

Pakistan took a hit when the world's leading wicket-taker in Twenty20 internationals, Umar Gul, failed to recover from an injury and was ruled out of the competition. Afridi, though, was confident he had enough fast bowlers to compensate. "Asif is there, we will certainly be looking for a forceful showing from him. But I also have the experienced Mohammad Sami, who is good form," he told the News. "Then there is Mohammad Aamer, who is regarded among the best fast bowlers these days. Abdul Razzaq is there who is really seasoned and is good enough to get breakthroughs for us."

Pakistan are pooled with Australia and Bangladesh in Group A for the first round of the ICC World Twenty20. They play Bangladesh in St Lucia on May 1.

these ones are from cricinfo, but sometimes members find some really interesting articles from other sources which everyone might not know. so its pointless to open up a thread for that one article so this is a good place to put all of it together, so for someone like me who doesn't go to too many places to find articles can just read them all together.

Mushy didn't go with the team yesterday as he still had an exam left, he is supposed to fly tonight and most probably he will miss the first warm-up match. He is in the third year of the history department in Jahangirnagar University and was giving his final exams. (Source: PA)

On the contrary, History is the norm when study is the second priority or when one aims for non technical jobs. My mother got two masters degree in History with B grade. She did that on top of caring for our entire family and her job.

Bangladesh wary of T20 tough guys
Sunday, 25 Apr, 2010

DHAKA: Bangladesh must play its best cricket to overcome tougher rivals if they are to move up in the World Twenty20 in the Caribbean, captain Shakib Al-Hasan said.

The South Asian minnows must beat at least one of their group A rivals — defending champions Pakistan or formidable Australia — to pass the preliminary round of the 12-nation tournament.

“These are tough teams, so I’m being realistic,” Shakib told AFP. “In fact, I am not very optimistic. We will have to play quality cricket to get into the second round.” Bangladesh won just three matches — against Kenya, Zimbabwe and the West Indies — out of their 14 T20 internationals in 2006 and 2007.

In their seven matches at the two previous World Twenty events, the Tigers have won just one match — against the West Indies.

“We’re well prepared, and we have some players in form. If we can play our own game, maybe we will qualify for the second round,” said Shakib, adding he was not happy with his own batting form.

Chief coach Jamie Siddons agreed, saying the team had a “very tough game” ahead of them.

“We need to play very good cricket to get into the next round. We will concentrate on our own game, not on the team we are playing against,” the Australian told AFP.

The Tigers, however, will be quietly dreaming of repeating their spectacular victory at the inaugural World Twenty20 in South Africa in 2007, when they unexpectedly beat West Indies and entered the second round.

But in the second edition of the tournament in England in 2009, the Tigers lost to non-Test playing Ireland, exiting the competition in the preliminary round, a performance Siddons had blasted as “ridiculous”.

Bangladesh’s success will largely depend on the performances of swashbuckling opener Tamim Iqbal, fast bowler Mashrafe Mortaza, veteran batsman Mohammad Ashraful and Shakib.

Mashrafe, 26, who is also a useful lower-order batsman, appears to have recovered from a knee operation, playing well in a domestic T20 tournament.

“He will definitely bolster our pace attack and his late-order power batting could come in handy too,” said Bangladesh’s chief selector Rafiqul Alam.

Despite Ashraful being out of form, “his ability to improvise in limited overs cricket makes him an important part of the team”, Alam said.

Ashraful, 25, was dropped for the recent series against England after failing repeatedly with the bat.

The Bangladesh captain, however, was worried about news of Tamim’s recent injury, with the 21-year-old opener hurting his wrist while fielding in a domestic T20 tournament match.

“We cannot afford to lose him now. I hope he will recover before the tournament,” he said.

The 21-year-old Tamim is considered one of Bangladesh's most promising batsman for the tournament, despite having a poor track record in T20 internationals.

Bangladesh have included two relatively new faces for the tournament — batsman and back-up wicketkeeper Jahurul Islam, 23, the highest run-scorer in recent domestic tournament, and all-rounder Sohrawordi Shuvo.

The Tigers will begin their World Twenty20 Cup campaign with a match against Pakistan in St Lucia on May 1 before facing Australia in Barbados on May 5.

I love how Dawn doesn't mention that Bangladesh are targetting a win against Pakistan when Shakib said that very clearly. And having watched the press conference on NTV I don't remember Shakib saying "I'm not very optimistic."

Injured Tamim hopeful of boosting Bangladesh
AFP, Apr 25, 2010, 08.55am IST

DHAKA: Bangladesh's flamboyant opener Tamim Iqbal is expecting to play a major role at the World Twenty20, despite uncertainty surrounding a recent wrist injury.

Tamim hurt his left wrist, which already had a hair-line fracture, while fielding in a recent domestic T20 tournament in Dhaka.

"There's a lot of pain and I can't grip properly," Tamim said.

Bangladeshi team selectors will be waiting until the last moment before announcing a replacement, as doctors have not yet ruled out the possibility of the left handed batsman being able to play.

"I want to play my natural game and I want to play some big innings to get our team into the second round," Tamim said.

"When it is our day, when we can give 100 percent, we can beat any team. So we are planning to concentrate on our own game, without thinking too much about who we are playing against," he said.

The 21-year-old is considered one of Bangladesh's most promising batsman for the tournament, despite having a poor track record in T20 internationals.

Tamim has scored 174 runs, with an average of 13.38 runs, in the 13 T20 internationals he has played, with his highest score of 32 coming against Australia in 2007.

But in the recent domestic T20 tournament, he became one of the country's highest scorers with 191 runs, at an average of 47.75, in five matches.

"Tamim is a key player and currently in very good form. He can bat against any bowling attack. We will need him to bat 10 to 12 overs to get good scores on the board," said Australian coach Jamie Siddons.

Captain Shakib Al-Hasan added: "Tamim has been getting good starts, which is a very good thing for the team. I would want him to continue like this in the World Twenty20 as well."

The captain, however, said he was worried by news of Tamim's injury and hoped that he would recover before the tournament begins.

The Tigers will begin their World Twenty20 campaign against Pakistan in St Lucia on May 1 and a second match against Australia in Barbados on May 5.

What? Australia seeded nine in World Twenty20, even below Bangladesh
By Kersi Meher-Homji
April 20th 2010 @ 1:32am

It must be a typo, I thought. Or a joke? Australia is seeded number nine in the World Twenty20. But first, IPL, with all its sixes, bomb blasts and controversies involving politicians is coming to an end this Sunday in Mumbai.

And there will soon be more sleepless nights for the devotees of instant cricket, as on 30 April, the third ICC World Twenty20 starts in the West Indies.

Being the winner of the inaugural World Twenty20 in 2007, it is surprising that India is seeded no. 6 in the current World Twenty20. It comes as a greater shock that Australia is seeded no. 9, even below Bangladesh, who is seeded at no.8.

Last time’s winner, Pakistan, is top-seeded, followed by Sri Lanka, South Africa, West Indies, England, India, New Zealand, Bangladesh, Australia, Zimbabwe, Afghanistan and Ireland.

The 12 countries are divided in four groups: each group having three countries. The two best from each group will make the Super 8. So expect the unexpected.

The winner of the inaugural ICC World Twenty20 in 2007, India, is in Group C, along with South Africa and Afghanistan.

In Group A, Australia will face Shahid Afridi-led Pakistan on 2 May and Bangladesh on 5 May.

The Super 8 commences on 6 May, the semi-finals on 13 and 14 May at St Lucia and the Final at Barbados on 16th.

How will Australia go in the third World Twenty20? They reserve their best when under-estimated. The underdog status brings out the red-hot best among the Aussies.

Remember how the under-rated Allan Border-led Australians shocked the cricketing world by winning the Fifty50 World Cup in India in 1987? The Australians would be fired up at this slap on the face.

The Oz squad for the 2010 World T20 is: Michael Clarke (captain), Brad Haddin (wk), Mike Hussey, David Hussey, Shane Watson, David Warner, Cameron White, Brett Lee (if fit), Mitchell Johnson, Shaun Tait, Nathan Hauritz, Dirk Nannes, Tim Paine (wk), Steven Smith and Daniel Christian.

Mike Hussey is the eldest at almost 35 and NSW’s leg-spinning big-hitting all-rounder Steven Smith youngest at 20.

If Lee is unfit, Doug Bollinger or Ryan Harris can fill in. Although Ricky Ponting will be missed, Australia has enough fire power to lift the World T20 and embarrass the seeding committee.

In Warner, Watson, Haddin, White and young Smith they have ‘six-o-maniacs’ who will pulverize any attack. Stability will come through skipper Clarke and the Hussey brothers.

Johnson, Tait and Lee (if fit) will spearhead the attack and Hauritz will spin with economy. In T20, dot balls are precious gems and no-balls a big no-no. They should aim at the former and avoid the latter.

According to reports, the defending champions Pakistan suffered a major blow when Umar Gul and Yasir Arafat were ruled out of the World T20, having failed to recover sufficiently from injuries picked up in the training camp.

Although this is to be confirmed, Pakistan’s loss will be Australia’s gain.

Pietersen set to miss England's Twenty20 Bangladesh warm-up

Monday, 26, Apr 2010 04:26

By Richard James.

Kevin Pietersen is set to miss England's first warm-up game ahead of the ICC World Twenty20 in the Caribbean so he can be with his pregnant wife.

England take on Bangladesh on Wednesday ahead of the competition which begins on April 30th.

Pietersen recently returned to the UK after playing in the Indian Premier League (IPL) and will now spend a couple of days with his wife Jessica Taylor before heading to the Caribbean to meet up with the team.

However, England captain Paul Collingwood confirmed Pietersen could also miss the final stages of the tournament, if the team get that far, to return for when Taylor gives birth.

"Kevin is spending a little time with Jessica. It is not a problem for him to arrive here two days late because he is already in good form and in Twenty20 mode," he said.

"She is due to give birth near the end of the tournament so it is possible that he might have to leave at some later stage."

Collingwood added: "He's obviously 'cricket-fit' and I think one of the major things is that the guys who have been out in the IPL have certainly got their brains switched on towards Twenty20 cricket which obviously helps.

"He'll just slide straight into the top order. The first warm-up game, he'll probably not play, but the second one he will come in. I have no issues with that."

England take on Bangladesh and South Africa this week ahead of their first game of the competition, against the West Indies, next month.

Lee targets fearsome foursome JAMIE PANDARAM, IN ST LUCIA
April 27, 2010

BRETT LEE believes he can form part of a fearsome four-man pace attack similar to the great West Indian sides of the 1980s, but he is at long odds to get a start on the turning St Lucian pitch for the first game against defending World Twenty20 champions Pakistan on Sunday.

Nathan Hauritz and Steven Smith will be strongly considered for the opener on a track expected to offer minimal assistance to the quicks, and Lee's visions of the four-pronged rocket attack may have to wait until the faster pitches of Barbados, where Australia will play their second pool match against Bangladesh.

Lee is eager to reclaim his place in the national side following well publicised injury battles but must compete with a broken thumb against Mitchell Johnson, Dirk Nannes and Shaun Tait.

Advertisement: Story continues below"I'm not here to carry the drinks, I'm here to play cricket," Lee said. "We've got four guys who can bowl over 150 clicks which is a bit like the 1980s West Indies set-up.

"We're happy about that and we're hoping to use that to our advantage. [We are] even being stopped in the street now, hearing the locals saying that you've got four blokes who can bowl over 150 clicks."

Lee returned from an elbow injury during the IPL but went wicketless and conceded an alarming 149 runs in 14.3 overs.

"I was happy with the way the pace was coming through, late 140s. Unfortunately I broke my thumb which put me out for about eight days," Lee said.

"I'm back now. I'm playing with it broken and I'm fine. I put my body on the line and try to go flat out. That's just the way I'll always play cricket."

The Australians are unseeded for the World Twenty20 after their three-day exit from last year's tournament – Bangladesh are rated higher – but a form revival in the short format over the past 12 months has seen their stocks rise among bookmakers.

Captain Michael Clarke, leading the side for the first time in a global tournament, is eager to better Australia's previous showings, both of which were first-round eliminations.

"That's the one thing we haven't done in our previous world championships for Twenty20, we've had the talent but we haven't played as well as we'd would like," Clarke said.

"This tournament is about making sure we fulfil that potential we have.

"It's a huge tournament. It's a form of the game that Australia hasn't been as successful at as we'd like.

"Our form over the last 12 months has certainly improved and is much better. It's a tournament that we haven't won yet. We want to make sure we play to our potential.

"We've got a really strong squad for these conditions."

Clarke said fielding four pacemen was a possibility for the match against Bangladesh.

Australia play warm-up games on Tuesday (Caribbean time) against Zimbabwe and two days later against Windward XI.

Vice-captain Cameron White, Tait and Michael Hussey joined the squad yesterday after completing IPL duties.
