Default Soumya, Mominul, Mosaddek still in our World Cup plans - Steve Rhodes

Quote:
Soumya Sarkar, Mominul Haque and Mosaddek Hossain are still a part of Bangladesh's World Cup plans, according to head coach Steve Rhodes.

The three players were dropped for the ODI series against Zimbabwe after underperforming in the Asia Cup last month. Rhodes said that he is closely following their performance in domestic competition, and will be present when the touring Zimbabweans take on the Soumya-led BCB XI on Friday. Soumya has scored a century, two half-centuries and had also taken a five-wicket haul in the ongoing NCL first-class competition.

"When people go out of the team, they feel lonely, down, disappointed and neglected," Rhodes said. "They feel neglected. We don't expect it from Soumya and Mominul who are quality cricketers. They can push their way back into the team. Mosaddek has also gone out. I will be at the practice game [on Friday].

"I was delighted that Soumya got two 70s and a five-wicket haul in the NCL game. The timing is terrific. I was in contact with him. He is the type of player who can push out some of our players. They have to keep performing and then they can get a go."

"[Ariful] is another batsman who bowls," Rhodes said. "He made double-century in the first NCL game, which is fantastic. Ariful, Soumya and Saifuddin are all the same type of players. Ariful is definitely a player we would like to see. If we don't test them out, how do we know if they are any good or not?"

Saifuddin could get the nod and is being seen as the possible replacement for captain Mashrafe Mortaza in case of an injury. "We think Saifuddin is a very good allrounder. He has the ability to perform at the highest level. He has had a taste of international cricket. He has gone away, and came back into the team. We expect him to be more matured.

"Mashrafe has had his injuries. He picked up an injury recently. We need to think about keeping someone ready as his replacement. We want to give Saifuddin some cricket so that he can be prepared. I like his approach and attitude and he looks stronger."

Rhodes is also confident that left-arm spinner Nazmul can partner Mehidy Hasan in the absence of Shakib Al Hasan. "[Nazmul Islam] Apu is a quality spin bowler. He has shown that in the shortest format, and we know that he can do well in the ODI format. If Apu plays, we have two quality spinners.

"Shakib is an unbelievably talented spinner, batsman, fielder and tactician and he can't be replaced. We have to make up in other areas in the team. There will be a bit more responsibility on Mehidy [Hasan]."

If they're in World Cup plans, why are they not given potentially the easiest series they can play

If in WC plans shouldn’t they be getting as much international experience as possible?

Nothing new here. Our selection committee has proven over and over again, they are completely clueless.

It's clear by now that Soumya is not having a form issue. However, it's still remains to be seen whether he has overcome his technical issues. Either way, see very little benefit sending him back to NCL. He should be with Mackenzie to work on his batting.

Rhodes probably said that so that the players don't feel neglected (as stated by him). He is not going to come out and say that they are not in our WC plans when the reporters ask him.

IMO, selectors created unnecessary complications by drafting Fazle instead of sticking with Soumya from Asia Cup. We already have a stop gap solution in Imrul, Fazle will be no better than him. Fazle will fizzle away either after the Zim or WI series, wasting opportunities team management could use to groom someone else for the WC.

Wasn't the same thing you are saying about Fazle said about Mithun! And guess what, he has been one of the highest runscorer for us in the Asia Cup. If you give players like Sarkar chances after chance even though there is a clear need for them to improve, they will not improve but just wait for another chance. That's why he should have one good season than one good match before being selected.

I see it differently.

Now is the time to see what bench and future prospect can handle. At home against a weaker side. What better opportunity will you get? We don't have regular A tours. So take these games are building confidence games.

Exactly. This is why players like Tushar or Fazle should not be picked when young players like Mosaddek need more exposure.

Fazle is not a complete package not has Tushars game drastically improved.

At this point, Kayes' spot should be secured in the world cup squad. Soumya's competition has to be with Liton, where Liton is currently ahead due to his 100 in the Asia cup final.

Regardless he should definitely make the final squad at this rate. Should have played the Zim series as well.

Agreed so long as it's not at the expense of Kayes. I would have also loved to see Ariful get more chance to prove himself in the lower middle order. Saifuddin has done well today, but another option wouldn't be bad.

Tamim-Imrul-Soumya should be restored for the WI ODI series. Even Liton does not look more convincing than a backup option atp. Shanto-Fazle should be sent back to A-team.

"They are in our plans so let's pick a 30 year old bum who averages 30 in list A ahead of them."
