Great news! These should be BCB's priority now
1. Extend pont's contract

Thanks to Lance Klusner for not coming to BD.

I dont like the practice of employing a coach on short-term basis. I believe a coach needs at least 2-3 years until he can deliver some results. We shouldn't just recruit someone on trial basis. We need to make sure we choose the best available ( & affordable) person and give him ample time to work on our boys. Look at England & Australia. Duncann Fletcher coached England for 7 years, John Buccanon was coach for similar period, even a coach like Tim Nielsen got a long term contract. Yes we can bring consultants for weeks or months but not coaches.
We also need to make the best use of them. When national team is off training, these coaches can train top domestic performers who we consider to be in the national squad in future.

Sounds all exciting on paper.
Remains to be seen on the field.

I just hope amidst all these experiments, the players are not forgetting their primary duty.

By the way, why break the news of the "butterfly" so early ??
I mean if he is planning to unleash the armory during the Zim series purely as experimental basis, he could have waited few more days, just may be before the series began.

A promise of too many things, picturing a rosy future could backfire if not delivered.

If he wants a long term contract, so be it. Cuz I think his ultimate goal is to be with the English team, being their specialist bowling coach.

But if he is trying to raise his stock, I say take a punt on Mr Pont and rope him now.

This is indeed a great news. If not 100% effective but surely gonna make an interesting impact in WC 2011.

I guess its called 'knuckle ball' in baseball. It will be great if our pacers can ball few of those here and there in PW plays.

He wants to stay and there's no reason why we shouldn't keep him. He seems very confident in his abilities (rightfully so) unlike the head coach. I'll strangle myself if we have a good world cup and yet the BCB fails to retain these two beyond the period of their initial contracts.

What bothers me about Pont is that he is using coaching techniques that make sense, trying out new things and thinking outside of the box, all with the goal to make the team better and provide results.

I would be more comfortable if he were to not do much outside of the ordinary, blame others when things went wrong but jump in for the full credit where things went right and demand an extension before the world cup. Now that would make him a coach worth supporting

It was published in India(most likely). Independent copied and pasted it.

I don't know how true it is.

Ah and here I was, crediting the journalists of the Independent for being more linguistically equipped than those over at DS. How stupid of me to think that of a Bangladeshi daily.

Well Asif bhai, I could be wrong. May be Bipin Dani works for Independent as well.

This is a revamped Independent in association with BBC, CNN, VOA and Aljazeera which began its new journey few months back, so Bipin Dani could very well be working for them also, and I highly doubt a reporter working only in Indian media will write such a detailed article on Bangladesh when their is no series going on!

@op - it would be better if Pont stuck to the basics and get their bases strong. Sounds good on paper, but I don't think it's gonna work, tbh. Probably he's just craving for some media hype.

SICK! I can't wait to see it. Hope they don't bowl it during Zim series. Lets keep it as a surprise package for the WC. Sounds to me, it could be something like a mix of breaking ball + change up + slider from baseball.

CAN WE KEEP HIM LONGER!! PPLEEEAEE

why are we telling the whole world about it? Why not keep it a secret thing for the WC? I really like the way both Pont and fountain are thinking...If BCB has some brains, they should keep these 2 after WC

Baseball + Cricket = Butterfly XD

Why are we not extending his contract? 6 months (if i am not mistaken) is not enough. 2-3 years is a good time.

Every time baseball came into cricket, cricket got something new. Starting with fielding coach back in the 90s. Who started this whole new thing called "fielding"? They never thought it was part of cricket, some teams still dont, (ahem Pak ahem). Aus (and SA) started this whole thing. And who was their fielding coach? An American, a Baseball fielding coach. And he is still coaching Aus. I also posted some where in BC, how both Pont and JF got a huge baseball background.

Also guess who came up with swing? Everyone will guess Pakistan or w/e, but no, that guy was an American cricketer.

Damn, why can't America play cricket? (it's too easy for them)

It's called "advertising". If you let it out randomly, people won't know who created 1st. Soon everyone will start doing it and everyone will forget who came up with it. Just like Pollock came up with slower-bouncer, hardly any one knows that. But if he had gone out and said it to the whole world that 'hey I am coming up with this', everyone would know it was him.

I understand your point but dont you think that the opponents will be extra cautious when they face us? They could have advertised about it after a successful implementation of this new technique of fast bowling in WC, but doing so right now might not be a good idea
