Recently, I was doing some research on the upcoming WI tour, and I don't know how I ended up looking at all WI stadiums. It's interesting that Bourda in Georgetown, Guyana is the only cricket stadium in the world with a moat around it, as it is prone to flooding.

I do love architecture, and thought I would open a thread on int. cricket stadiums.

Two of my favorites

HPCA Stadium in Dharmasala, Ind. Highest int. cricket ground in the world, also a candidate for the most aesthetic backdrop. I personally love mountains, so it's a no brainer for me. I like the main stand as well, has a Tibetan theme to it, which makes sense as Himachal Pradesh shares a border with Tibet.

MCG in Melbourne, Aus. Mostly because of its sheer size. I like mega architecture, and this is an example of that. Concrete and steel all around. At 100,000 capacity, it seats 35,000 more people than Eden Gardens, the second biggest cricket stadium in the world. Most grounds do not even seat 35,000 people, think about that.

Also, I always liked the bricks at the entrance gates of Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. It's just unique. Sri Lanka's Galle Int. Stadium is also very cool due to the Galle fort and ocean backdrop. Also interesting that it was completely destroyed in the 2004 tsunami and had to be rebuilt.

Lord's and SBNCS are two of the most overhyped stadiums out there imo.

If you like Architecture and Engineering, you will know the stadium with the best drainage system in the world is the GABBA in brisbane.

SBNCS is hyped? news to me

only thing that is hyped about SBNCS is the drainage system and tbh when it was introduced it was a world class drainage system. I remember rain pouring down for 2 hours and still they were able to start the match one hour after rain stop

Naturally Bangladeshi stadiums will be "hyped" here on a Bangladeshi forum. Not sure how that translates to universal "hype". Fairly certain that internationally they're not well-known at all, let alone hyped.

Some stadiums in the island nations of the Windies are gorgeous. I think there's quite a picturesque one in Queenstown, NZ as well. Galle fort definitely makes Galle a pretty ground, too.

- Sophia gardens. It is located inside a lovely park. As a spectator sitting viewing angles isnt the best. Also the stadium when I went felt old and required some renovations and didnt feel like an international standard stadium. Despite this, the reason its the best for me is I saw Ashraful score a century against the Aussies and beat them who was one of the best teams Australia have ever produced.

- The Oval: Every match I go to in London is always at the Oval. It always has a festive atmosphere in here and seating is quite good all around. I went to a wedding here and managed to go to areas which fans arent normally allowed too go in.

- Bangabandhu National Stadium: This will always have a special place in my heart as this is where I started watching international cricket. Now its used for football. I was here to witness the first ever successful 300+ chase in ODIs. Poor fan facilities though.

- Worcestershire County Cricket Club. Ok its not a stadium but a nice ground. Its located beside a river and some nice views of surrounding inside. There is a small cosy pub inside the ground as well. You can easily go and meet any player playing.

Not a big fan on Shere Bangla Stadium. You never know what kind of ground it's going to be.

Off course bhai. I have been to Shere Bangla Stadium and we all know that it's one of the worst stadiums in world cricket ( I love its drainage system though)

Oohh wait a second...Eclipse miah bhai is from Kolkata?
Eclipse dada, bari kothai? Hoogli na ki? Bou-bazaar? Hawora Bridge area? Chok-Bazzar?

My amma (RIP) was born in Kolkata in 1946, in the muslim quarter. She was 2 months old, I believe when the Hindu-moslem riot broke out. My first grand-mother (my grand-father's first wife) died in Kolkata of heart disease in 1944 and she is buried in the Moslem Cemetery there. I have visited her grave site once in 1978.

But thats not the fault of the stadium but of Eclipses compatriots who I am guessing he will claim to be Bangladeshis ruining the image of Indians

Oh man, I played my 1st big game at this venue. Under-15. It was the national Under-15 finals.
I must admit that upon entering the ground I was in awe of the stands (Kanhai, Lloyd Kallicharan, etc). It feels so close to the action (kinda like baseball). The same pitch where Windies played a test match in 1930, I played on it. A 14-year old me was giddy and starstruck.

The reason for a moat is simple. Our country is 6 feet below sea level.

The players' pavilion is something from Victorian Era:

It has a rich history and it's easily one of the most iconic cricket grounds in the whole world. Yes, few unfortunate incidents happened in the past, but those were parts of the game and can be considered as insignificant/irrelevant factors in the grand scheme of things.

Not the new one. But the old Yankee Stadium was amazing. So much history and championships won. I was lucky to catch a couple of games before they destroyed it.

I think just about any cricket fan will rank Dharamsala stadium as one of the best. New Zealand also has some stadiums with amazing backdrops.

But cricket stadiums are boring comapared to football (soccer) stadiums. Check out braga stadiun in portugal.

Yeah, those moats we call them 'drains'. Looks stunningly clean in that picture.

There's a street by the ground called Shiv Chanderpaul Drive.
A couple of footsteps away is the Botanical Gardens and the Zoo.

I think the Dutch designed all the drainage systems and arteries in the city
