Default Update on TV-Media rights

Two company called Sports Solutions and Vergo Media have submitted bid for the worldwide media right for Bangladesh cricket for the next 4 years.

According to a local tv channel sports solution offered only 15 million USD and other one offered a mere 6 million! Where as Nimbus had offered more than 50 million (http://www.espncricinfo.com/banglade...ry/267422.html).

This is really surprising that not a single reputed company came and bid, not sure we will have quality TV production in the upcoming years.

Let me know if you have any news on this.

The highest was $15 million from Sports Solutionz. But it was not accepted by BCB due to "We have declared Sporty Solutionz's bid as non-responsive after they couldn't provide a bank guarantee,". So the one and only contender is Virgo Media for $6 million.

Really worrying.

I say wait up.
They got two deals on the line but none of them deemed good enough at this point.
Why not take your chances ??

We've got world cup coming up and if we can manage to do well enough to attract more attention and get us few more tours, we might just be able to have a better deal.
You never know.

Extend the deadline by a month or so and lets see what happens.

Say no to Nimbus. BCB should not rush it. Deal will come. But for the time being they can still have series by series deal.

info please Virgo Media Limited, is that channel 9 that broadcasted BPL?

Sporty Solutionz picks up global TV distribution rights for SLPL
New Delhi - Seems ok, but I don't see any difference between Virgo and Sporty Solutionz, One broadcasted BPL and the other SLPL.

I wonder if BCB has any connection with higher end sport media firms like ESPN. Heck, I even wonder if they received a copy of this tender.
Can Sahara connection make any difference? I mean they are affiliated with two test nation and should have experience in working with media firms.

They can still go on with series by series deals. For example, they'll have a separate deal for the WI series and continue to do separate deals until they get a long term deal.

I don't think ESPN would be interested doing a full time production down in BD. What they did before was they just bought the rights to telecast in U.S. from Nimbus, which is more convenient for them. I think ESPN3 will definitely be interested in doing that again, if it turns out to be a good deal for both parties.

There are three components in sports tv rights...production , distribution and broadcast...the production and distribution is often done by one company and they sell the product to different broadcaster and in lot of cases a broadcaster hires a production company and the broadcaster broadcasts and also sells it to other broadcaster though there distribution wing or some other distribution company..as you can understand a single broadcaster doesn't have market penetration in every market.. e.g. Ten sports is not available in the uk or the carribean

No resolution yet on BCB media rights
Sports Reporter

The Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) yesterday opened bid documents from the only two companies who had submitted the international call for proposals for the worldwide media rights.

A total of four companies including Ten Sports and Sony had originally purchased the tender documents but only Sporty Solutionz, an Indian sports rights management company, and the local Virgo Media Limited (Channel-9) submitted their tenders by the deadline.

“Sporty Solutionz offered the highest $ 15 million while Virgo Media Limited offered $ 6 million,” said BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunus before adding that there were still a number of complications. “Sporty Solutionz did not comply with all the clauses, especially a bank guarantee of $2.5m as was stipulated in the tender notice. Virgo Media Limited complied with the clauses. After examining the tenders we declared Sporty Solutionz as non-responsive,” said Yunus, following the board meeting which took place yesterday to discuss the tender issue.

“Virgo Media Limited is now the only responsive company and as such the board has decided to engage in discussions with the company about raising their offer to the highest benchmark ($ 15 million). The board will meet again if the company agrees, otherwise we will pursue legal opinion about re-bidding,” added Yunus.

It should be mentioned that the BCB's previous deal with Nimbus was a staggering $56.88 million six-year deal that was struck in October 2006.

But given the bitter experience with Nimbus and the prevailing market scenario, Yunus said that he was not at all unhappy about the value of the bids.

“You have to take the current market situation in your consideration when you compare the offer with the previous deal. On the other hand we also have to understand one thing which is that we have realized only about $3 to $ 4 million from Nimbus, which included a huge production cost.

“But this time it is a net offer and the production cost or other things will only come to consideration if we arrange tri-series' outside of the matches allotted in the FTP,” explained Yunus.

The BCB had floated the tender for TV rights for the period of November 1, 2012 to April 30, 2016 and Bangladesh are scheduled to play 18 Test matches, 46 one-day internationals and five Twenty20 internationals in the next four years as per FTP.

I believe ESPN-STAR knows about it and espncricinfo has published a news on this yesterday. There are not too many test nation in the world and it's assumable that big company's agencies and sales wings often keep an eye on things.

But you never know the politics behind it, perhaps everyone knows about, but they did not bid intentionally. They probably want a local company go for it cheaply and then they will buy that and produce it.

For example If channel nine buys it then they might sell it to STAR, STAR might produce it and stream it to their channel. It happened during BPL.

So fingers are crossed.

I wonder what made TEN and Sony not to bid. May be it's a strategy.

Why should they? What can you expect from "tigers" who can't even defend against club teams like TnT and now "owning" the ZIM bowlers!

kissui hobe na!
