WC was extended to 32 teams in 1998..Since then..
1998 champion France was out in 2002 1st round 2006 champion Italy was out in 2010 1st round 2010 champion Spain was out in 2014 1st round 2014 champion Germany is out in 2018 1st round no European team won the WC in 2002

Interesting. It's hard to win it twice in a row anyway. The last team to do it was Brazil when they won 1958 and 1962.

Its true that its very hard to win twice in a row, but the manner in which these teams go out (all in the 1st round) is pretty perplexing. Any theories why this happens?
