Default British TV Shows

A convo in another thread encouraged me to open this.

With US TV getting so much coverage these days I dont think British shows get as much recognition.

Here are some of the more recent British TV shows I enjoyed watching.

- Downton Abbey
- The Inbetweeners
- Luther
- The Informer
- The Body guard
- Citizen Khan

From my perspective, I have always enjoyed the british shows more than American ones. The concept of lot of american shows are copied from british ones.

"Office" was probably one of the the only few successful copies but that is mainly because "Ricky Gervais" is the producer for both to my knowledge.

I absolutely hate teen comedies but the british ones are great, "Skins" was amazing and so was "Misfits" .

Everytime there is laughter and applause played in the background, It shows that the tv series lacks true humor. I know people love "friends", and I love Joey too but the humor is forced and not great to be honest.

British crime drama lacks popularity but miles ahead of American ones. They are more real and does not show outrageous plots . For example, I am not sure if the lawyers in "suits" are also the best action super hero, Sherlock holmes and superhuman all in one (given the number of cases they solve every week). Totally unrealistic.

Compare than to "Broadchurch" or "Marcella" .. They are gripping dramas. "The Fall" was also great. The best Cop based suspense show for me is "Line of Duty" (I still dont understand why no body knows about it).

If you hate teen comedies then you wont like the Inbetweeners. Its kind of a coming of age show.

I prefer the US Office than the British one tbh.

American comedy is ok but its not like the dry humour they use in British comedy.

I saw the first series of Line of duty which I liked but the other seasons didnt appeal to me as much. I prefer Luther which is much more amazing.

Btw forgot to add SHERLOCK to that list

US office is better, it has a bigger production budget and it is made by the same british creator (Ricky Gervais and Ryan merchant) .

Sherlock Holmes is a good show .
One thing I noticed about most british movies/TV in general is that they are more focused on acting skills. They hardly emphasize on looks and glamour. A lot of the leading cast in British TV shows would struggle to get a role in American TV.

TBH the British actors these days tend to be a bit better looking than they were in the 80s and 90s. But yes the acting is given more focus in the UK which is why many British actors getting serious roles in the US these days. Few examples are House: Hugh Laurie, and Damien Lewis in Billions+Homeland+Band of Brothers .

UK TV dramas also have better music and better landscape shots. They try to make the production close to the real thing.

I absolutely loved Red Dwarf. It's a Sci-Fi sitcom.

I recently started watching Bodyguard on Netflix. Not bad. Don't watch anything to do with teens.

Just finished the body guard and it’s wicked.

The first scene of the series was intense. The last episode was the best. So many twists. Tv show of the year.

I am surprised that no one mentioned "Black Mirror"..
That is probably the best and most gripping TV show of all time.

Even certain episodes of Game of thrones can be dull and boring but Black Mirror is amazing from the first to the last episode of all season.

I have probably missed it as I am not a sci-fi fan. Also I think due to most of the TV audience who I think are more American oriented, will have no idea of such shows.

I dont know why but I never liked GOT

British shows suck big time. Only a handful are even worth mentioning.

Some good ones from the past are :
Spooks
Strike back ( the first few seasons when Rhona Mitra was around )
Ultimate Force
Hustle ( amaaaazingggg ! )
Crystal Maze
Finders Keepers
