Default Amazon Headquarters comes to Queens, NY and Arlington, VA

Two places where I either lived or have extensive family. But got no properties in either places. Great for property owners and job seekers. Bad for renters. 20 years from now queens will be a hub of some sort that includes jamaica center area as well where massive development already taking place.

No matter the price, there are some places in USA where it's never a bad thing to own properties.

The two places that chose aren't really cheap places either. Long Island City got transformed last 15 years - it was most industries but now many high rise co ops and condos got developed as it is short distance to manhattan and also can have manhattan skyline view. So the rent there has skyrocketed - in 3K area for 1 bedroom last few years. It is however still relatively cheap to buy apartments there in comparison to let's say upper/lower east side.

Introduction of Amazon head quarte opens up door for other big corps to come here as well. The location, infrastructure, available talented work force is large in numbers but cost of doing business is high... But with amazon being in queens now other companies can treat NY outboroughs as a city center as well... Should more comapnies wants to have a bit of annexation here - I expect the housing in LIC and sorroudning area to cont to skyrocket and be in line with manhattan, williamsburg etc.

Big plans for Jamaica center also in works for some time now... we are in midst of ny megacity transformation.

Though traffic and housing would cont to be bad for a lot of ppl, never the less, these are good positive things for any city in my opinion. If you can't fight them, join them. that's my motto.

Now some of these bengali kids in computer science don't have to go to virginia or california for jobs.. they can live with their mommmy and go work for amazon and earn 170K

I live in Arlington. Amazon is going to be leasing out a bunch of buildings within a block from my wife’s office. Our commute is going to be horrible. DC metro infrastructure is already horrible, last year they went from running trains every 4 minutes during rush hour to every 8 minutes and don’t even get me started on cost of living increase.

Start buying Condos. I know that area is already pretty expensive. It has gone up pretty significantly over the last 5 years. Lots of new residential buildings but they are expensive. Virginia is unique in a sense that if you are ok to drive some distance you can have good living space for cheap but around DC metro area near train station is pretty high cost - and likely that's where the prices will cont to rise while rest remain stagnant.

Good for you - you can apply for Amazon Job and start earning 200k if not doing it already .

There is a massive amount of IT talent there and amazon jobs there will be competitive while vacancies will start popping up in those companies currently doing those govt projects. Another thing is it also gives many of the current IT workers leverage to re negotiate salaries to become in line with close to amazons -basically cost of everything just went up theoretically. it's a good thing if you are in that sector - don't distress over some traffic nuisance. Ppl should be happy. Be part of it.

Where in Boston do you live?

Boston traffic seems just as bad as any other major city in the US. Probably better than DC, ATL, and LA still. Chicago is pretty atrocious because its unpredictable.

NYC traffic is hit or miss. When you hit it, its BAD but if you miss it, its not bad at all for a city of its size.

I lived in DC and gotta agree with DC traffic, do not know much about LA. Visited Atlanta recently and it seemed lighter with roads hugely spacious compared to bad roads in Boston. I live 28 miles North, that 35 min drive to work could get as worse as close to 2 hours and never less than 75 mins during peak hours. So I am using public transport more, it did not reduce time much but with additional cost gives me the luxury to sit and read .

2 hour commute for 30 miles is pretty par for a large city I think. But yeah I've been hearing from most Bostonians that they are happy they missed out on HQ2.

not only that. that's drop in a bucket. that's just a direct offer. the impact of 25k high income ppl with their family - and the sorrounding investments needed to support the ppl would create many many more jobs..including many many non skilled jobs. this creates massive tax revenue for city and state that can use the money to then fund the progressive ideas...

Not to mention NYC would no longer be a financial hub but rather a tech hub when more and more tech companies would consider opening headquarters in outborough. It's great location.

There is a reason why every single city was fighting to have amazon and incentivizing them. It's not that big corporations getting tax credits from ur money. That is a good political slogan but not true.

Perfect real example of what happens when u become restrictive.. we argue on forum sometimes about... this is playing out in real life.

It can be mutually beneficial for all..doesn't have to be one vs other. Why wouldn't u spend 1 dollar if you can extract 10? This is billions of dollars of potential annual revenue.

If the richest person ever in the history of humankind cannot afford to do an investment without tax break from government, then dal mein indeed kuch kala hai. And this is more so, when NY is ruled by two biggest corporatists - Cuomo and deBlasio.

As I always say, capitalism is socialism for the rich, individualism for everyone else. When the government refused to provide free handout (i.e. tax break) to Amazon, Amazon chickened out.

Right. These posts sound great on forum and discussion only but yield poor results.

The richest man in the world didn't become rich by bending over backward for everyone else. This was a pure business negotiations and I think NYC had an extremely good deal. It's amateur dumb f&&& like AOC that create this kind of problem. What she stands for are great but she also needs to have realistic goals on how to achieve what she wants to achieve. USA ddin't become a destination of world talent so they can come here and get 90% taxed.

This should have been a pure business transaction not political. Amazon realized it's not the simple tax break but these politicians will create all sorts of other legal problems for them including possibly an image problem.

When you run a place with 3rd world country ppl, the that place becomes third world. Getting hand outs for your ppl are great but you need to create an environment where the finance for those handouts are available.

AOC is a congresswoman from a system that allowed it. She needs to keep that in mind before pointing blames on the system rather than its ppl. yes many of her ideas are great but they have to be sustainable and fair...

she should dance and make a drink for bezos to convince him to come back. that's all she is good for anyway. nothing else. Will achieve NOTHING for people.

dumb AOC logic: We can use the tax money amazon is getting to fix our crumbling subway system.

Reality: Where is the money? It's a tax BREAK YOU DUMB a%&^ that would create real revenue via employee and empoyer payroll taxes every year.. not to talk about all the other tax revenues from increased businesses to support that influx of ppl. There is NO money that's being handed out. It's NO BODY"S money..... it's a tax break and cost nyc ZERO dollars.

idumb, watch this MSNBC segment on AOC and Amazon.

https://www.yahoo.com/entertainment/...141318058.html

they agree with your point of view --

1. tax incentives are not free money that they can be used for subway/teachers
2. majority of local queens populace wanted it

and many more.

I think it’s a loss for NYC. Those tax incentives would have paid for itself in a short time.

NYC and NYS would have collected huge tax revenues from those high paying jobs. Plus these people would also generate lot of sales tax (which is close to 9% I think). Plus a lot of jobs would be automatically created surrounding the area. The city needs these money to help the struggling MTA and overall infrastructure.

Google already has a big presence in Chelsea piers. Facebook also has a sizable employee in downtown. But this Amazon HQ2 would surpass a lot of that and make NYC a mini tech hub. They can’t rely on high finance paying jobs only.

The city needs a lot of money to upgrade its infrastructure. Historically NYC has only been a finance hub but those jobs are moving away in the past few years.

CitiBank moves a lot of jobs to Tampa, BoFA ramping up Charlotte, UBS in Nashville, Deutsche in North Florida, Credit Suisse in Raleigh, and famously Goldman has already moved across the River. BNP Paribas going to Weehawken, NJ. These are all happening in the last decade that I’ve seen or heard from my friends and colleagues in this industry.

So NYC needed to diverse their economy and job demographics by enticing such jobs.

The only thing I was concerned about was real estate. Skyrocketing home and rental prices has had a huge impact for the local lower and middle class NYC people. The median income for NYC is around 50k and with the influx of high paying jobs a lot of lower income people would be priced out of the real estate.
