Default Dyson sacked as West Indies coach

West Indies cricket lurches from one precipitous state to another, with the news that the board (WICB) have sacked the coach, John Dyson, ahead of the forthcoming Champions Trophy.

He is to be temporarily replaced by David Williams, the assistant coach, who has been in his role with the side since 2007. Williams has never hid his ambition to become the full-time national coach, and expressed his dissatisfaction in the appointment of Dyson, from Australia, rather than opting for a West Indian.

Dyson took over the post in 2007, but was almost immediately in the bad books of West Indies fans when he couldn't attend their series against Zimbabwe. His appointment came hot on the heels of Jeff Dujon's less than ringing endorsement of cricket in the region, when he said "no coach in the world can help West Indies".

Nevertheless, Dyson made a good start when West Indies beat South Africa - their first overseas win in a Test for seven years - which helped quieten the deafening criticism that West Indies should have employed a native coach.

Success was sporadic. His most notable achievement - the 1-0 series victory over England earlier this year - saw West Indies regain the Wisden Trophy, a laudable achievement for side seemingly constantly in transition or up against the odds. However, the feel-good factor didn't last as he brought a disgruntled squad to England in May which included a number of players who would rather have been at the IPL.

It has not been a happy end to his tenure, and he departs after the recent Test and one-day series defeats against Bangladesh. West Indies fielded a severely weakened team after a dispute between the WICB and the West Indies Players' Association (WIPA) over contracts led the withdrawal of all the leading players.

In addition, the manager, Omar Khan, has been replaced by Lance Gibbs, the former Test bowler. West Indies are also sending a shadow side to South Africa in September despite the main players saying they were available for selection.

Poor Dyson! He must be now regretting his decision to refuse BCB's offer!

Exactly my thought Eshen bhai....do feel bad for the man for losing his job, I lost my job a few times in this life and I can guess how it must feel to coach Dyson. Best of luck to him in the future and best of luck to the West Indian cricket team!

WI cricket has bigger problems that its coach right now.

I don't think Dyson could have turned this WI around (the wins against SA and ENG) and SF berth in WC T20 is nothing to mock.

I would consider him to replace JS now.

^^ as a footnote, BD is on the right track now. The Shakib-Siddons team needs a chance against some chances before deciding if Siddons is the right guy or not.

IMO, hiring an expensive head coach is not making a huge difference for us at this point. I would let Sujon-Salahuddin pair take over the team and hire lower profile but specilized batting and bowling coaches under them (Salahuddin has fielding covered).

Both Salauddin and Hira will not be with the national team anymore. BCB replacing them both after the Zimb tour. BCB thinking of hiring a foreign fielding coach. (News is old. Heard it few weeks before.)

Don't care about Heera, he is another incompetent politician in our sports arena. But sacking Salahuddin?!

Besides being the fielding coach, he also helps spinners. He has done a wonderful job so far!

Exactly so. But I think we need a better fielding coach.

Few weeks ago Prthom-alo reports Salahuddin is too frindly with players and he lost his command over them or something similar! BCB didn't like it!

I also think he is doing a very good job. Heera must go though.

In what way he is doing a good job? He couldn't even make a specialist slip fielder after working with the team for 4/5 years.

WI board just saving some $$ by sacking the coach. Future of WI cricket is not good.

Murad bhai, I guess you were not around when Bangladesh used to lose matches simply because of horrible fielding. You can still see how poorly a newcomer in the team does in fielding and how drastically he improves with his time in the team.

Salahuddin has his limitations, no doubt. Yes, he failed to groom any sleep fielder. He also failed to help close fielders to improver their accuracy with direct throws. BCB can hire a fielding consultant to help players improve in those two areas, may be Salahuddin needs add couple more drills. But I don't think we need a whole new fielding coach.

Saw this coming when TC, Bish and JD were making fun of him during the BD tour.

Dyson could sue

http://www.radiojamaica.com/content/view/21047/48/

Recently axed coach of the West Cricket team, John Dyson, is reportedly considering legal action against the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) following his dismissal.

Dyson's contract with the WICB was scheduled to expire in November 2010, but he was fired by the board following the team's test and one day series loss to Bangladesh.

The WICB offered no reason for terminating Dyson's contract.

However, reports have suggested that he was dismissed because he confronted the board about the team it selected for the upcoming ICC Champions Trophy tournament in South Africa..

Contractual issue led to Dyson's demise - WICB director

http://www.jamaicaobserver.com/sport...B_DIRECTOR.asp

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados (CMC) - John Dyson was sacked as West Indies coach because he had not signed his contract for the 18 months he held the job.

Conde Riley, a director of the West Indies Cricket Board from Barbados, disclosed that the regional governing body had no choice but to dismiss Dyson.

Riley, a retired investment banker, is the first vice-president of the Barbados Cricket Association, and also sits on the WICB's finance, as well as human resources committees.

"When an employee has not signed a contract for 18 months, he cannot be serious and therefore you don't have to have a reason [for termination] - it's a straightforward case," said Riley at a WICB news conference on Tuesday.

"The directors - like myself - are not responsible for the day-to-day management of the WICB. There is a chief executive officer, who looks after those matters, and is to make sure that all the contracts that are supposed to be signed are signed.

"The directors meet once a quarter, committees may meet in-between at times, but officially we meet once a quarter, and we then enquire of the CEO if so-and-so has been done, and over a period of time, the directors take a decision."

Dyson has been temporarily replaced by former Trinidad & Tobago captain and West Indies wicketkeeper David Williams, who is set to condition the team for the ICC Champions Trophy starting later this month in South Africa. Riley acknowledged that having an employee in such a key position working without a signed contract was untenable for the WICB.

"People would say we were weak, or that he should not have started to work, but there were two CEOs who were employed with Mr Dyson, who were trying to get [him to sign]," said Riley.

"We discussed it [at a meeting] last November in Antigua. Mr Dyson was at that meeting, and then the team was off to New Zealand, came back, played against England and Bangladesh, and the directors took a decision.

"It is a very unsafe position to be in when people don't sign contracts and you are paying them in accordance with the provisions of the contract."

Dyson was fired, after the disastrous home series defeats to Bangladesh in Tests and One-day Internationals, when West Indies fielded a severely depleted line-up.

This followed a contractual row between the WICB and the West Indies Players' Association, when the majority of the leading players withdrew from consideration.

Dyson questions WICB's professionalism

Quote:
"It is correct that I didn't sign a contract, but the question is why," Dyson told Cricinfo. "The first contract I was presented with had written on it Bennett King's name and address. Obviously, I couldn't sign that. Then there were three points I felt needed clarification. It took more than two months for them to clarify the first point, and they never got back to me on points two and three. I was never offered a contract I felt reflected what we had discussed previously. But it would seem the WICB have problems with contracts with quite a few people, and not just me.

"The only discussion I have had thus far was a phone call from (acting chief executive) Steve Camacho. He told me the executive of the board had decided to terminate my employment with immediate effect. When I told him that I was a bit shocked and asked him why, he said that he was just the messenger and that he had fulfilled his duty as messenger. I haven't heard any more since then. If I had been in some drunken fight then and brought disgrace upon myself and the board then perhaps I could understand. When I was working for the (NSW) department of education there was a process to follow in these sorts of matters. It has been disappointing."
