Default Leg spinners

1. Wahidul Gani - played only 1 ODI
2. Mohammad Ashraful - Wahidul Gani's student, was a leg spinner, now a specialist batsman, only a part time leggie now
3. Alok Kapali - an all-rounder, bats a bit (has a few 50s), bowls a bit (has a test match hat-trick)

But none of the above current players (2, 3) are really specialist leg spin bowlers. Now here's one - Ashim Chowdhury, I'm not saying that we should include this guy straight away, nor am I saying to watch for this leggie.

However, his bowling performance (getting a set batsman out) today in the 3rd test between BD U-19 and ENG U-19 has reminded us of the leg-spinners in the game of cricket, and especially leg spinners for Bangladesh.

I believe there are a number of leg spinners in the age-group level - previously there used to be Ashraful, now Ashim, and before there was a player named Arif - who are all leg spinners, at least good enough to take a few wickets or to make a name for themselves (for their leg spin variety).

And yet, at the senior level, whether its International or national or club cricket - the names of such leg spinners are just not in the picture any more.

Yes, at the International level, we've got Rafique, a good test match bowler, however, since the year 2003, it has been proven time and again that Rafique, a left arm spinner alone cannot win us test matches. In short, Rafique needs the help of the pitch or the help of the quick bowlers to really give us some chance of winning test matches.

Well, it has been a few years - 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003, 2004 - five years to be exact, that we're playing longer version cricket - at both International and domestic arena. And yet, we're still unable to produce a quality leg spinner for the National Team.

Yes, in this time, we have managed to draw our first test match ONLY RECENTLY. But the fact that we are a country of the sub-continent, where spinners are produced in abundance - makes me wonder, are we never going to produce a single leg spinner of International standard?

May be we'll have to wait for that much-awaited win for the lack of a leg spinner in the side?

I think Ashim is the man we are looking for. Taken 2 wickets to lunch and thats quite promising. But we cant see how much he turns it and where he pitches the ball. they maybe batsmen getting themselves out

I thought Rubel is the best leg spinner among current Bangladeshi players. He was with some A teams (visited west Indies) and handy in batting.

Yes I thought Rubel's pretty good too. However, he's only good enough for the A team I guess. i've watched him play a couple of times - he's ok.

I thought Kapali used to be pretty good initially before the team management forgot he came into the team as a leg spinner who could bat a bit after he scored that 40 odd against Australia...I still feel he is being wasted...He has always been and still is a leg spinner who is pretty handy with the bat too...But we hardly use him..He is not even treated as an occasional bowler now..!!!...I feel for Kapali...He is out of the side for no fault of his own...I can't believe that the management is trying to establish a lower order batsman into an outright middle order batsman !!!!...The result was inevitable..I hope they are careful with Rana now...He is another very good spinner who can bat a bit...Yes..he has scored a few runs but that doesn't turn him into a batsman...I hope the authority don't repeat the same mistake.

He has some long standing problems with his shoulder.

that's a good point. Notice how we want Rana not only as a top order batsmen, but as an opener as well!

Well a good leggie is priceless! I guess having so many good SLAs has made a leggie less crucial for us as both turn the ball in the same direction. I am yet to see a quality off-spinner who can make a permanent place in our lineup. That would bring some variety to our spin attack. Rajin Slah has taken wickets with his offspin. May be he should be bowled more responsibility with the ball as well.

Lets take the case study of Alok Kapali. He was (and still is) basically a leg spinner who was transforming to be an all rounder. He played a few valuable innings against SL, SA, Aust and WI. So our expectation went sky high. We expected super human efforts from him. We want him to become Tendulker (who is basically a batesman while capable of bowling a bit) over night. That is what back fired. That is what brought his temporary (hope fully) down fall. In way way Alok kapali dug his own grave (hope fully not). Had he played some gutsy inings agianst SA, AUS and WI he could still be regarded as basically a bowler who could bat a bit or may be a handy all rounder. He could have enough time and concentration to improve his batting. Instead we forgot his bowling abilities (remember his hattrick against PAK and the wonderful few overs he bowled agiast WI in WC 2003?). We kept pressurising him to perform with the bat, kept pressurising him to score century. Yes, I am not denying that he is capable of doing so at times. But under such pressure (even he was called to open the innings) he fummbled. Lets not balame him. He certainly has tremendous potential. Let us nurture a future giant in BD cricket. After his deserved break (or punishment - what ever we call it) let us give him back his no 7 spot (5 down). Let us start using him as an all rounder (the only other true all rounder we have in the team is Manjurul Rana). Let us tell him that 100 will be bonus, but we expect him to take a few wickets and score 30-40 consistantly. He certainly has the ability to respond to that call. Let us not over burden him. He is still under 22.

Yeah give him a break, Ash got dropped and he came back in fighting spirit. Kapali will do the same as his junior team mate.

The other point is that, these days, spin bowlers can bowl until they are 40.

Kapali has plenty of time to resurrect his career.

"sasharif", very well written.....
Due to the lack of good top order batsmen we trying out with too many different players in those orders (openning, 1st and 2nd downs) and taking away the comfort zone of batting for some players.
I think if BD can produce some reliable top order batsmen over time we will be able to nurture players like Alok, Ash to their full potential.

I partially agree with Ian W. However, I am afraid that the selectors think if you are 25 (well may be 27 - 30) then you are too old to play for BD (well, almost). Because the new comers should be given opportunity for the sake of future.

Kapali has long standing shoulder injury that prevents him from bowling both in practice and in match. To the best of my knowledge, he can bowl only few overs.
