Default Mark Boucher to undergo eye surgery

Mark Boucher's participation for the Test series against England is in doubt after he suffered a "significant injury," to his left eye during the tour match against Somerset. Boucher had to leave the field at the end of the 46th over when a googly from Imran Tahir ricocheted off the stumps and struck him in the left eye. Photographs showed Boucher bleeding from the eye as he left the field.

The photo was unnecessary. The article itself is sufficient.

Really sad and unfortunate.
That is probably the career ending injury for him.
Irony, he stands on 999 international dismissals.

Mark Boucher has retired

Post op this was the report

"The extent of the eye injury can be described as severe. The eyeball (globe of the eye) was repaired during the operation," Mohammed Moosajee, the South Africa manager, told ESPNcricinfo. "The long-term prognosis at this stage remains unknown. He is definitely out of the series and will return home as soon as able to travel. The selectors will announce a replacement shortly."

Real shame...you never want players to go out in this manner

I just read about his eye operation. Man the thought of it hurts. I feel so sad for Mark. Hope he recovers.

ICC must make it compulsory for WK to wear protection when standing to close to stump.

This happened in summer of 2010

and 2 years later

Boucher is uncertain of recovery. I know many will say they are different circumstances as one got hit by a ball and other by a bail but both WK was standing close to the stump.

Default Mark Boucher retires

Mark has announced his retirement post the horrific eye injury. It was probably his last Test tour as well.

What an imperfect ending to a fine and respectable career. I think we all can agree that Mark Boucher is probably one of the finest WK to grace the field. Maybe only behind Gilchrist. Respect Mark.

What a terrible way to end his career. Boucher along with Gilchrist redifned wicket keepers role in todays cricket. That test record he put together will stand for a long long time, maybe forever considering how teams are playing less Tests nowadays.

I sincerely hope he gets his vision in the injured eye back. This is really terrible.

man that was some serious injury. Im seriously frustrated watching keeper in front of the stumps and yet having no helmet. You never know when the ball deflects onto your neck or eyes...or some other part of the body.

All I want is that he has a quick recovery.

He is no doubt a legend..His batting may not be close to that of the likes of ponting and tendulkar but we must remember he was also a WK.

He did mention that he is gonna retire and its not just intl cricket..its simply competitive cricket as a whole

he will def. lock everything up so no real chance of him getting ready to for a t20 league which doesnt really matter to him. If he could really play in BPL then why not for national side?

and also he probably has his commitments and other works

Respect, definitely one of the best WK's of his era. Agree with him being second only to Gilchrist, maybe even on par with him.

someone pointed out Mark Boucher retired with a test average of 30.30 and Taibu with 30.31. You can not make this up.

I think most of has seen the famous Boucher sledging Taibu video.

they say there is no obvious detachment of the retina so he could regain his sight, later in the article it says boucher does express interest in playing for his franchise although it's to early to tell whether he will play cricket again.
