Default Bangladesh would have to play a qualification tournament for 2015 World Cup

The ICC Chief Executives’ Committee (CEC) meeting began the ICC Annual Conference week in Hong Kong and concluded today.

The key recommendation it has made to the ICC Executive Board is that there should be a qualification process for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 but did not make a recommendation to the ICC Executive Board on the number of teams that should compete in the event to be held in Australia and New Zealand.

The ICC Executive Board meets tomorrow and Wednesday, when they will announce if they have accepted and agreed the recommendation, and what format any qualification system will take.

There is still a strong desire amongst the top ranked Full Members to have a ten team tournament, so the most likely scenario is that Zimbabwe and Bangladesh will be put into a tournament with the top six ranked Associate sides.

There will probably be a parachute for the two countries in that their participation money will be guaranteed from the 2015 event, even if they fail to make it through to the final stages.

One further concession which is thought to being negotiated is the venue for any qualification event. Scotland was originally down to host the qualifying competition in 2013, but Bangladesh and Zimbawe will resist strongly having to play in conditions which don't traditionally suit them.

They would rather host the event, or at least have it in the UAE, where ICC are based.

It promises to be an eventful few days in Hong Kong, with the future of Associates and Affiliates cricket very much at stake.
