It couldn't have happened at the worst possible time.
With strong Asian Football Confe-deration (AFC) and FIFA delegates, who are in Dhaka as part of the 'Vision Asia' project, watching from the media enclosure at Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur yesterday, Mohammedan Sporting Club officials and players decided to disgrace the image of Bangladesh's football through behaviour which was totally unlawful and indecent.

When Muktijoddha Sangsad's long-throw specialist Belal's deep hurl was deflected into the Mohammedan net for an equalising goal with six minutes of normal time remaining, a furious black and whites captain Jewel Rana led a wild protest for cancellation of the strike claiming that the ball had gone in straight from the throw-in. What happened next was a sequence of shameful acts.

Jewel, a former Bangladesh international, charged towards referee Ram Krishna Ghosh, pushed and shoved him and then let out his rage on linesman Shahadat Badal. At one stage, Jewel was seen virtually dragging Badal off balance near the centre touchline and even threatening to slap him.

The AFC officials, who have arrived in the country to find out the problems facing the game and to help Bangladesh become a respectable name in the continent under the Vision Asia, were visibly irked and disappointed at what they were seeing.

"Why doesn't the referee just show him (Jewel) the red card and let the game continue," said one member of the delegation as the match was stopped.

NTV camera crew went in a showed he msc players a reply of the goal and it seemed like their protest was justified inanother article on dailystar. THAT and the incident in the Mukti-AKC match goes to show that Muktijoddha such some strong backing from some a very strong group. To bad though, I used to like Mukti's as the third team.

I dont support what Mohammedan did today. However, I have began to dislike Muktijoddha now a day and starting feel bad for both Abahoni and Mohammedan.

AKC fans target photojournalists

A section of Abahani supporters yesterday verbally assaulted photographers of different newspapers and threatened them with dire consequences during the Western Union Premier Division football league match between the Dhanmondi giants and Sheikh Russell Krira Chakra at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium.

It all started after Abahani's Russian striker Maxim was shown the red card in the 35th minute of the first half. As a furious Maxim made his way to the dressing room, photographers covering the game rushed to take snaps.

As they neared the corridor to the players' enclosure, a group of Abahani fans started hurling expletives and threatened the lensmen for taking Maxim's photos.

The insults continued to rain in for the rest of the game as the photojournalists started feeling insecure.

"I left the stadium under police protection as I feared for my safety. This kind of behaviour from fans directed at mediamen is unprece dented. We have never experienced anything like this on the football ground," said one photojournalist of a leading daily who preferred not to be named.

After the match, the aggrieved photographers complained to Abahani's supporters association chief Julu about the incident but he in turn reportedly accused the journalists saying that they had incited the crowd by swearing at them first.

This year's Premier Division league has already seen a number of unfortunate incidents. Yesterday's events only added a new dimension to the prevalent ugly atmosphere and raised concern about the safety of journalists covering football.

Abahani's top scorer Maxim will miss Mohammedan clash as he was red carded in yesterdays match.

They shud be ashamed to start with if a long throw manages to get into the goal without any deflections... what does the belal guy eat anyways??? he cud get the damn ball in from a throw??? If i was Jewel Rana I wud go kick the keeper... tell him to wake up and try to put a nice face that yes most definitely the ball went in thru a deflection... how stupid is it to have it directly gone into the post from a throw???? Football in BD is sad... its in a sorry sorry state... and specially in this league... things have just gone waaaay beyond the limits...
