Default 25th anniversary of our 1st ODI match |

We are 25yrs old ODI nation now!
31st March 1986 - 31st March 2011

bdnews24.com article: link

We have really progressed a lot, 25 years ago in our first ODI match we made 94 against Pakistan and after 25 years in our own country at the World cup we were all out for 58 and 78 against West Indies and South Africa

Look up what happened in the match after that 94, and look up what happened in the match after that 58. And we'll find out what happens in the next match after that 78. That's the difference between 25 years ago and now. It might not be enough to brag home about, but it's still a little something.

But you have to factor in Powerplay and also quality of opponent, no?

avg increased by 12-13 runs and rpo by 1.6

so in the next 25/2=12.5 years our avg will be 35 and rpo will be 5.3

and after that..12.5/2= 6.25 years later our avg will be around 45 and rpo will be 6..thats the time we'll become world champs...

so 12.5+6.25=18.75 years Later we will win the World Cup--i said it here

Oh yeah... of course ... but the trend is important .. remember we used to lose to Papua New Guinea and Bermuda. Now winning against England or Australia while still an upset is not "The World's Most Amazing Sporting Upset" like it was after our 2005 NatWest win against 2005 in Australia. Before, one heard of 'foreign' experts disparaging us or questioning our Test status or making jokes about 2-day Tests. I don't see them these days - even after the 58 and 78 and in fact those were reported as surprises by the foreign press instead of as a natural state of affairs.

The problem is with our fickle fans who sway like pendulums from one extreme to another. We are either World Champions or we are The World's #1 Losers. The folks don't even deserve to be called fans and need to be flagellated on a regular basis.

What we are is one of the strongest Cricket playing nation in the world. We are after all ranked 9. Yeah, we are not the best and we do not have the player pool to be the best, yet. But we are getting there. Perhaps slower than we would like, but we ARE getting there.

I feel much better these days where I can seriously contemplate a series win against the visiting Aussies without being completely laughed out of the room as opposed to the days we were getting beaten by Malaysia and Denmark. Yes, Denmark. Worse - Bermuda - population 64K. Heck on a good day, a wedding in Dhaka has more people.

I will let the so called fans indulge in their self-flagellation, their woeful wails of abject sorrow and their painful anguish. I, on the other hand, will enjoy my cricket.

Cricket, Bangladesh Cricket.

We did pretty bad from 1999 to 2003. No single win in that period. Except that dark period, we did pretty good, I think.

Now we need to win more games against top teams every year.

With our fan-base and the popularity of cricket in recent years, I am not very happy with the progress we have made during the past 4 years. If we look at the graph provided by Zunaed bhai, there is a reasonable increase in the team total between match 90 and 150/160 (approximately between 2003 and 2007). During the last 4 years, we have played most of our matches against declining teams and still we do score about 230 runs (only 10 runs more than the 2007 standard) per innings. If we call it a progress, we have certainly failed to take any batting-made-easy rules into our advantage.

The graph also shows we had to fight against the decline to make those improvements after 2003, while in 2007 we had a much better starting point. If we do not like to be tagged as minnows, we certainly need better performance.

Oh thank you, the England game never got the appreciation that it should have, mainly due to our 78 against SA.
But coming back from 58, then crashing to 168/8 and still winning the game, it must be one of the greatest comebacks ever. I never thought the Bangladeshi team had the mental strength required to bounce back like they did, but they proved me wrong.
But we still need to work on our consistency, a breath taking performance followed by a 58/78 is acceptable once every year. Hope it doesn't happen to often

You are forgetting two factors my friend... i) rate of progress of other teams ii) the chance of ODI cricket becoming an obsolete format in World Cricket

Let's see:

1) We still can't bat as a cohesive unit.

2) Still can't find the gaps and rotate the strike.

3) Still brainfart our wickets away and the master, compulsive brainfarters continue to get chances.

4) Still select the odd player with inadequate ability because of the false notion that he's a "hardworking grafter".

On the positive side:

1) We have significantly more talented players from Shakib's generation onward, yes they're still coming, who will get better no matter how frustratingly slow the real development of our cricket infrastructure.

2) Even the BKSP senior team can beat Scotland, Hong Kong, Denmark and other nemesi our alga-matobbors currently running the board and coaching (?) NCL sides used to struggle against.

3) We're a way better bowling and fielding side.

We have another class of "fans" that is even more irksome than fickle ones. I put that word in quote because we have a few here who have only one agenda - that Bangladesh cricket sucks and should not be given Test Status. That is it. That is the only topic they post about. Nothing else. Shows no interest in any other aspect of Bangladesh cricket. In fact, we have 2 or 3 "new' members who seem to be singing from the same song book. One has to wonder. We have real fans who praise and criticize - we have the good and the bad and we live with it.

So what purpose do these others members have?

Remember the tag lines of BC - "Home of the Tiger Fans" / 'Where Tiger Fans Belong".

After a while, the one note songs get really annoying and we all want to turn the channel off.

Do we have a BC definition of the so called "Real Fan"? May be we can develop a "Real Fan" assesment test by which all members here would be able to find out where they stand.... It can be done through a series of BD cricket related questions by which we make an assessment of Cricketing Knowledge and Attitude towards Team. I am sure talented members like Zeeshan can forumulate the qualitative analysis while Al Furqaan/Captain Math can do a quantitative one

sample scales provided below:

.......................Attitude Assessment Scale.........................
Idiotically Optimistic---------Realistic------------Annoyingly Negative

......................Cricketing Knowledge Assessment.................
Shamim-esque----------------Atahar Ali-----------------Shane Warne

Was taking a look at world cup histories and noticed some interesting facts.

1. SL participated in world cups from 1975. We did in 1999.

2. Sachin has played more world cups than Bangladesh has in its entire history.

3. Kenya, netherlands, zimbabwe, canada has been playing in world cups before us.

So considering where we were 25 years ago we have come a long way. These days we whitewashed a top 8, competed for the next round with top8 teams in successive world cups ( we did finish level on points with WI).

So i say dont let the 58 & 74 fool you. Even best of teams have lows & highs. BD cricket has come a long way.

The scores of 58 and 74 was simply a result of overwhelming pressure on the young shoulders of our cricketers. As i have stated before I feel no bd team has ever had to face this level of expectation from fans and play a tournament of this magnitude in our home grounds. Those scores were not a true reflection of how good we are... and i feel now that the spot light is gone we will begin to play much better

Those two losses did hurt on that day... but what i want to remember most are the two thrilling wins against Ireland and England. As fans we will have disagreements in terms of who should be picked and what not... we will whine, complain, make fun of poor shamim... but at the end of the day we all should be glad that there is atleast one sporting event where we can compete at the world stage and be able to dream big.

As far as progress is concerned the last series in England sort of sums up our progress... we beat England in England in ODI and even though we couldn't match the strength of England for most of that series we still did okay under alien conditions. Tamim's century at Lords will always be an unforgettable moment in my mind
Looking into the future I feel happy thinking that everytime we do play a game against any of the top 8 teams we will always have our chances to win
