Let's talk about movies
This thread is dedicated for all, preferably intelligent movie-related discussion, favourites or not, what you've watched recently, what you liked/disliked, etc.
I like any good movies regardless of genre, though I prefer movies that are dark and psychologically complex. Last night I watched 'House of Sand and Fog' (Jennifer Connelly, Ben Kingsley). If you've watched it you'd know what an emotionally disturbing movie it is. Not complex, just a very morally ambiguous and hopeless story of tragedy. I haven't even felt this about Requiem for a Dream, which was devastating from first to last. I have moderate favourites for sad endings, like Man on Fire, The Machinist, American Beauty, Million Dollar Baby, etc. I was told about 'Grave of the Fireflies', a WWII themed Japanese anime by the makers of 'Spirited Away' and 'Howl's Moving Castle'. I'm going watch it tonight.
I want recommendations, tell me the most dark, depressing movies you've seen (without revealing spoilers). By that I don't mean awfully boring films that made you waste precious hours of your life.
Also is 'Children of Men' any good?

Hatebreed,
looks like you are bored of your joyful and happy life, that you plan to resort to watching depressing and dark movies. Why do you want to get depressed? Go and watch Happy Feet.

Thanks for the suggestions. I've watched Butterfly Effect and Fight Club. If you liked them, watch Donnie Darko and The Machinist.
Definitely watch Requiem for a Dream, I'd say it's the darkest emotionally engaging tale of F up there is. Also watch Memento. I'll post more later.

1. Three Extremes (Saam Gaang Yi)
An Anthology of three films from accomplished Japanese directors Takashi Miike, Fruit Chan, and Chan-wook Park. I highly recommend this film to anyone who is tired of watching horror films marketed for little kids. If you are searching for something artistic, horrifying, depressing and with something to say, then by all means indulge yourself in "Three Extremes" a fine example of how Japanese Horror is kicking American Horror firmly in its a$$.
2. The Hours
Whether one should call it depressing or not, this movie made me somber, yet I saw it quite clearly as being about how people will live unhappy lives, just to make others happy. And how, when you live life for other people, life is not living. Every day comes to represent the same day. Every day turns to just hours.
But I strongly recommend you to read Virginia Woolf's novel "Mrs. Dallaoway" before watching The Hours, or here is a chance that the movie might go to your 'mathar upor diye'
On a side note, two years back I started a thread on Requiem for a Dream which contained some interesting comments. You may check it out here:

Yes I did...long time back. As far as I could remember I didn't like it much, but it was without a doubt, one of the best technical films ever made.

Thanks Navarene.
Japanese/South Korean horror always gives me the creeps. The Hours sounds good, I'll try to read the novel. Have you watched Magnolia?

Synopsis:
Quote:
On one random day in the San Fernando Valley, a dying father, a young wife, a male caretaker, a famous lost son, a police officer in love, a boy genius, an ex-boy genius, a game show host and an estranged daughter will each become part of a dazzling multiplicity of plots, but one story. Through a collusion of coincidence, chance, human action, shared media, past history and divine intervention they will weave and warp through each other's lives on a day that builds to an unforgettable climax. Some will seek forgiveness, others escape. Some will mend frayed bonds, others will be exposed.
|
So definitely worth downloading. Let's just say 'Crash' is the new-Magnolia that won the Oscar.

lol thanks.
If you like sci-fi/action thriller, watch Children of Men. It's set in 2027 dystopian Britain when mankind can no longer procreate. It's sad, violent and probably more realistic than you might think, which makes it more terrifying.

I watched "Run lola Run". I found the movie interesting.. the theme of the movie was interesting too... "what could happen with small changes in Lola's decision - three versions of Lola's quest were presented " ...
As Nav said, this movie is one of the best technical films ever made -- In this movie Camera took the part of talking instead of real characters.
I liked at the beginning when lola was running down, the stairs were animated...
when she encounters someone, s/he was introduced thorough a series of photographs and that changed in each sequence and so on.. I am not movie critique so it is difficult to me to explain ...i better stop ;|

I saw 300 two weeks back I think. I thought it was a very inspirational movie, the kind that gets your adrenaline pumping. Or at least I found it like such. I went with two friends and one of them liked it so much that it was her third time watching the movie. There were times during the movie that I found myself clenching my fists.
