The rise of a new star?
Written by Wasim Ahmed
Is there a positive sign for the search of a proper no.3 batsman for Bangladesh? The maturity shown by an 18 year old boy gives hope to many cricket lovers of the country. Asif Ahmed (Ratul) scored a splendid hundred against Rangpur (152 from 156 balls) in the National League and in the process Asif shared a partnership of 225 with Mohammad Ashraful, his favorite player. Surprisingly, Asif dominated in that partnership. This is his third hundred in the first class cricket.
Asif scored 82 from 119 balls with 11 fours against Sylhet division in the last match of the National League. Asif is currently the top scorer in the National League with 687 runs. He has targeted the record of maximum runs scored by a Bangladeshi Batsman in a season. The current record holder is Minhazul Abedin (Nannu) with 1012 runs. Asif will have 6 more innings to achieve that feat.
This is his second National League only. Last year Asif played for Barisal Division. But this year he is playing for Dhaka Metro along with national stalwart like Ashraful, Mehrab Jnr, Elias Sunny. He really enjoyed his partnership of 225 with Ashraful. Asif said, “It’s a great experience to stay at the crease with such a great player like him for such a long time. He is still Bangladesh’s best batsman. He helps me a lot in the field.”
Asif came through the rank of under 13, 15, 17 and 19. He played for Bangladesh Academy team as well. In first class cricket he has scored 1072 runs so far at an average of 45.
Asif always dreams about playing for Bangladesh national team. He believes that within two years his dream will come true. He is preparing himself for that. He has targeted no.3 position in the national team which is a great worry for the team for a long time. Asif can bowl a bit off-spin as well. In the last premier league he took 18 wickets with a hat-trick. He wants to stay in the national team for a long time.

I don't like the idea of Asif and Anamul getting advice from Ash. They should learn from guys like Shakib, Tamim, Mushy and Mash.

Scored centuries in his first 2 first-class matches and currently averages 43. I want to see him at No 3 soon.
He is one day younger than Anamul Haque.

No doubt Asif is promising youngster but dont want him in the national team in 2 years time to be frank. Same thing goes for Mominul.
I haven't seen Asif playing but i have seen both Anamul and Mominul play and based on my observation, i find Anamul to be more matured and skillful. So, only Anamul either at opening or # 3 position and 1-2 bowlers (arafat sunny, abul) can sneak through in the team . Otherwise, the current squad looks solid and want them to be playing for at least 1-2 years.

lets see what happens remainder of the first class season, he was the most consistent batsman so far this season. Bijoy started off just as consistently, but pulled an Ashraful the 2nd half of the season.
Mominul might not be ready, but he seems to have a very sound technique from the little I saw of him, he appears to bat like a left handed Mushy. Tiny batsman, but extremely compact.

I dont think he is gonna be near but yeah, he is a good prospect. The point is, shakibs are not born everyday bro...they are to be made and for that you need to have the perfect mentality, just like shakib. He may say that he is the laziest, but MMW, he is def. the best in business

We need batsmen who can prosper at Test level and are very, very solid. I hope Asif, Anamul, Mominul can be that. Even Shakib is just finding his feet batting at Test level. For now, we just have Tamim who has a good Test record and Shakib (batting) and Riyad have OK ones.
We know that Shakib should be averaging over 40 with the bat in both ODIs and Tests. Atm, he looks more likely to peak above 40 at ODI level.

Everyone forgets about Mushy's batting when it comes to Test cricket. Before tamim showed up with his crazy form against England. Mushy was the only one who was somewhat consistent. Look at Mushys test innings for the last 2-3 years.

All the good newcomers are now hailed as the next Shakib
Let him perform well for at least 2-3 seasons in NCL. Then have him play in A team. Ravindra Jadeja has batting average of 45.16 after playing 38 FC games. Ranji trophy is much more competitive than our NCL and see how he is yet to get a Test call. In ODIs, his avg is mere 28 after 40 matches with only 5 50s. This tells you how different is domestic cricket from intl cricket.
Let him score at 40+ average for 2-3 seasons and then we will consider.

India thinks Ravindra Jadeja is their Shakib. Overpaid, overrated player. Bowling is average, batting is just ok. Fielding is very good though. If Shakib was Indian, wonder how much Super Kings would be willing to pay for him

He seems very much a specialst right handed batsman who bowls a bit of (useful at domestic level) off spin. This yeah in first class cricket he's done well at #3 averaging 45+ at a strike rate over 80, with a top score of 150+. He wants to make the team as a #3 batsman.
