Default "My sorrow is how we lost" - Shakib speaking to Prathom Alo

http://www.prothom-alo.com/detail/da...27/news/293001

He pulled no punches. Ties in with my rant.

An excerpt:

what really surprised me is how we saw some players on the boundary weren't diving to stop the boundaries during the game. If a world class bowlers like Steyn can dive at everything even when the match is almost won, I find this reluctance from our players truly shocking.

Jutar bari won't be enough. Kick them out of the team for good amount of time. Let them repent. I rather have bunch of no name players than these so called star players who don't give 100% in the field, who don't give his heart when playing for Bangladesh. How could they do this to us? Man I am pissed..

Notice how Shakib says " Amader deshe keu century korle nishchinte match er por match khele jeto"
I think this statement is quite disturbing. It shows the goal/ambition of our players goes only as far as getting into the national side.

This shouldn't be news to you

Remember how Tamim (even though he is pretty much among the best we have) celebrated his back to back 4 ... wait for it ... 1/2 centuries. Half centuries? Celebrate that? Why not question why you couldn't convert? I've seen our players go gaga after getting a 50 in a losing cause. Fail. If you could not help your team win - you fail. Milestones be damned.

You are right. The various statements in the past did point to the same conclusion

Not sure I'm too happy with this bit....

For those who can't read Bangla....

The interviewer basically asks him what he'd want in the team, and aside from good fielders a strike bowler(Steyn) Shakib also wanted....

Quote:
Shakib: We're good spinners...but I want a world class spinner in the side
PA: Can't you be that world class spinner?
Shakib: No, I'm a good bowler...not world class.
PA: Can't you become a world class bowler? Or do you need God given abilities...something from birth?
Shakib: There is definitely an issue with talent, for example...I can't become Ajmal, and even if I want I can't bowl like Mendis(in terms of bowling action). But I believe, if I really want it, I can become a bowler like Swann, but then I have to sacrifice my batting.
I know what he's saying...but it's almost like he's accepted that this is as good as it's going to get for him...

he's kind of right. no world class spinenr out there is also an allrounder. swan can bat a bit. but he's not selected for his allround abilities. same with warne.

he's asking for a pure spinner of world class calibre. that's fair enough. and his point about sacrificing his batting is also right. I'm pretty sure no one wants him to lose his batting. you can't have everything.

Shane Warne wasn't merely a world class spinner...he was an immortal. There is a difference between becoming one of the best ever and a very good player. Shane Bond was a world class bowler...but no one is going to put him in a top 15 of all time pace bowlers.

There is middle ground there.

I don't like it when people put on a ceiling on their future trajectory - why can't you try to get your bowling average as low as possible AND simultaneously strive to up your batting average towards 40. You might fail...but isn't it better to try and fail than to simply accept the status quo?

Something may get lost in translation - world class to Shak might mean Warne class. I will cut him some slack, specially since he IS world class in both batting and bowling.

WRT to the bowling comment, look at the examples he cited. Mendis. Ajmal. Really unique bowlers who can be well nigh impossible for batters. Unorthodox. No matter how hard he tries he won't get to be one of that. He's honest. He admits he can be as good as Swan, who lest we forget, has been the #1 spinner for a number of years. So he's not exactly setting a ceiling here. Remember this is the same guy, who, despite coming from a footballing family, decided he was going to be a cricketer as a teenager. Why? "Because in cricket I can see myself playing in a WC" This is the same guy who Rabeed Imam selected as one for the century when he was just 16. Why? Because of strength and clarity of mind. Self awareness need not be self-limiting.

That it is...I particularly liked that he didn't hide behind diplomacy. He called out his teammates for the fielding. Because as we've all discussed here many times in the past...fielding is something you CAN control.

It is about effort and hard work, simple as that.

That players lacked desire out there is an insult not only to the rest of the team, but also to those fans who spent their hard earned money to go watch Bangladesh in Sri Lanka.

Sakib's observation about lack of competition for positions in the team is so true couldn't agree less. Having being benched at KKR he had to prove himself to make it to the squad even after being MOM. Being benched has defiantly also helped Tamim's game. We need more competition for places in the team. In the Indian team even Sachin has to compete! In our team we have players who scored a century once upon a time. These players know, somehow or the other, they will eventually get back in the team because their is no one to fill their boots!

The most candid, truthful interview ever by one of only two world class players Bangladesh has produced to date. He's the only one with a functional cricketing brain, and awareness of the game beyond the DPL Habamoni-Mohamodon context.

{RANT] Most of our cricketers want all the money and fame they see on TV but without the sacrifice and hard work, driven by passion rather than necessity, to achieve those. They are lazy beyond belief and the alleged quality of domestic cricket actually maintains and enhances those disgusting habits.

BCB, other than the rare exceptions you can count with the fingers in one, veteran Yakuza lieutenant's hand, is packed with ignorant, talkative and egomaniacal idiots who don't get cricket at this level despite their involvement with the sport for decades. Rationalization, love of sycophancy, ethical relativism, sectarianism, dirty party and club politics, blamegaming, decontextualized statistical spin doctoring, and plain old stupidity from folks who believe they're smart, won't change the culture either.

In fact, most don't even know what smart means. They think it has something to do with looking sharp and sophisticated. I've met BCB dudes with extensive playing and organizational experiences in Dhaka who believe the words "bowl" and "ball" mean the same thing. Needless to say, they're not aware of what the latter infers. They also do "wide" and "white", "firm" and "farm", "lose" and "loose" and "decent" and "descend".

It's nothing short of a miracle that we've come this far on "natural progression" and "organic growth" alone. No other sane test playing nation has or ever will select the type and sheer number of players of players they do and their fanboys defend until kingdom come. Other boards have issues, but they would never select so many of the toothless, sightless and lazy guys as we have since day one.{/RANT]

this just shows how much more experienced and how much more exposure shakib has had compared to everyone else. our pipeline players just don't think for themselves.

you don't need to have played international cricket to know the basic tricks of the trade. our players need education about the game..learn to think about the game.

You can feel the frustration in this interview. I think its only Shakib who understands the competitive international cricket scene.

He played in county and also in KKR and shared dressing room with many great players. As much as I despise IPL, the tournament is very demanding and there is a lot of pressure from owners, fans, and media. He knows how to fight for spot in KKR while most of our the so called 'stars' in our team are automatically selected.
