Default The Economist writes about Bangladesh's stunning growth and development in the face of adversities

http://www.economist.com/news/leader...et?frsc=dg%7Ca

Quote:
IN 1976, five years after independence, a book appeared called “Bangladesh: The Test Case of Development”. It was a test, the authors claimed, because the country was such a disaster that if development could be made to work there, it could surely work anywhere. At the time, many people feared Bangladesh would not survive as an independent state. One famine, three military coups and four catastrophic floods later, the country that Henry Kissinger once dismissed as “a basket case” is still a test. But no longer in the sense of being the bare minimum that others should seek to surpass. Now, Bangladesh has become a standard for others to live up to.

I think there already has been some discussion on BC about this article. I think Sir Fazle Abed has been a true unsung hero for Bangladesh. Prof Yunus might have captured more of the limelight but the contribution of Brac towards Bangladesh in terms of Women Empowerment, Education, Child support etc is in one word phenominal and more than Grameen as an organisation.

Of course, the mind-boggling dissection of Sarcophaga crassipalpis aside, BC search engine ranks as THE most complex tool ever.

He doesn't get it primarily for one reasons.

1) Younus designed the Micro finance as a completely social welfare, he never extracted profit from there.
1) FHA, made/makes a fortune from the Micro-finance.

That's due to the inherent difference of planning, between a Professor and a CA ...

You should check the source of your information...
BRAC is an Non Profit organisation, the profit it makes is invested back in the business and that is only done to make the whole organisation self sustainable. Sir F.Abed does not extract any money from the profit.

Grameen on the other hand does make profit. The reason Younis is more popular is because he came up with the idea of Microfinance and recognized the fact that women are more useful with money than men.

I suggest you watch this interview and check your sources...

I don't know enough about BRAC, but what are main differences between Grameen and BRAC.

In terms of interest rate, it seems Grameen is 11% flat rate and BRAC is 15% flat rate. On a declining basis interest rate, Grameen's rate is a close to 20%.

SOURCE for declining basis:

I don't need to know it from these interviews, because I have crystal clear idea about the mechanism of their programs, how it works on the ground.

Grameen makes profit but not Younus, he was all through a consultant and has drawn peanuts as remuneration. FHA has a cost of borrowing money at the root...for whatever money goes to each and every branch of BRAC...that goes to FHA. if you want to really know it all, you have to understand it on ground...... Gotta know how MF functions at the branch level.

I don't have any source in between me and my info...it's direct from origin...

I know what NGO means and how they make profit....
