One way might be to check their maximum checked luggage dimensions and get a non-standard-sized box that would fit the bat (but still within the size limit). Pack the bat well so that it does not get damaged during handling. You could write "FRAGILE" in bold red, but the handlers might still through the box around as they normally do.
Check the box and say a prayer...maybe you'll receive it intact.

Well, I guess you got solution to your problems already. I just wanted to add, branded shops here in Dhaka (And Chittagong too) sell very good bats now. You can get top quality bats if you are willing to spend 4k-5k (BDT). To name a few shops of note- Sports World, Reebok. Next time, don't bring bats from abroad; will save you from a lot of hassle.

Here's an update.
Wrapped bat in bin bag and duct tape and bat arrived safely without a scratch! Had to hand it to large luggage section at Heathrow. Didnt have to pay no extra charges.
Friend was delighted. Kashmir willow and a cork ball bat. I told him about a V County for £40 I had seen and he told me they sdll for Tk 12k in Dhaka... costs more in BD and he knows more thsn me being a professional cricketer about bats
