Default How to be Happy!

What is the secret to happiness?

- I am not struggling to have basic things in life
- I have a family that I can go to any time.
- I have couple of friends that I can hang around with if mutual time can be managed
- I am married to a woman who cooks good food.

Yet I am just NOT happy!!... Just don't know HOW to be happy. Do you feel like me or you found a secret?

Along with the 'mistakes in my life' thread, I now see a case for a BC version of 'In Treatment'

didn't understand the reference, never watched "in treatment". All I am looking for is happiness. I don't think that should make me a "case".

Its a state of mind. You can only be happy if you know you are happy. Catch 22, if you are not aware of the precondition: being calm & content.

In the voice Morpheus:
"Don't think you are, know you are"

Things that works for me:

- Being content and have reasonable expectations.
Don't worry about having the next flashy gadget just because everyone else has one. When reality doesn't match unreasonable expectation you are bound to be unhappy.

- Not try to control (or worry about) the uncontrollable.
You can't cheat death. The best you can do is try prolong your life by living healthy. The act of living healthy itself will make you happy.

- The finish line is not the point.
People usually associate finishing/reaching a goal with happiness, but gets surprised when the feeling is short lived. That's because reaching the goal is not the point but the journey towards your goal is whats making you happy.

Exercise & Meditation.
- It works. As simple as that.

Have a hobby
- No, watching movie and p0rn doesn't count. Preferably something physical that involves creating/building something.

However, at the end of the day; you are not going to be always happy and smiling from ear to ear 24/7. There will be good times and bad times. The idea is to have more good times, but not always. You would want to have some balance in your life to have a healthy perspective.

If you have depression (depressed people sometimes don't know that they are depressed) you might wanna see a psychologist. Popping pills doesn't always have positive effect - but sometimes its one of few best options you have.

iDumb, there is no secret. If Camus is to be believed, for someone to be content, one needs to accept the futility of their existence and the certainty of their fate.

Sometimes, not having a family to go to can make you happy. Seriously. It opens up doors and makes you over the edge productive. You achieve things quicker and derive satisfaction from that.

Camus is one of my favorite philosopher.

Okay, being serious: Travel the world.

We tend to get fed up when life gets repetitive.. going places can bring a change to that.

Just keep it simple... We shouldn't think too much about life rather should consider every minute as an opportunity presented to us and we should make the best use of it !!!

Life is a roller coaster ride and once we are on it we better enjoy it, We should scream with joy, shout on top of our voice just to let the fear go away.. That way by the end of the journey we will be able to look back with a smile on our face and think " What a wonderful life"

I was paraphrasing a part of Camus's "The Myth of Sisyphus". (The Myth of Sisyphus is the myth of the man condemned by the Gods to ceaselessly push a rock up a mountain and watch it roll back to the valley below.) Camus finds a parallel between our own futile existence and the ceaseless, pointless labor of Sisyphus. He concludes that man, like Sisyphus, must realize the absurdity of their situation and accept it - only then will they be happy ("we must imagine Sisyphus to be happy")

On serious note:

I have been to some tablig-jamat gathering, even spend overnight in the mosque. What I learned from those gathering is:

1. To be happy, the most imp thing for human being is the peace of heart, not other things like money & power that most people are running after.

2. Those who prayes 5 rakah salah, Allah promised to give them peace in their hearts (even in dunia).

3. Feed yourself & family only halal food from halal source of income.

Just shared it because above 3 works for me, I consider myself as a happy man .

Or one is man enough and mature enough to publicly proclaim love is enough. Better that than be immature homophobic nitwits whose synapses only allow repeating meaningless one word comebacks. The future does not portend well for the human race.

Yes, I have cried at movies. Yes, I've also gone hunting for bears with the boys. I've ridden on the range in the Texan badlands and I've also written poetry. I've almost died. I've been broke. But, I'm happy. I have love. My wife and my daughter.

I agree with WorldCup11's less-than-serious post: enjoy/appreciate the little things in your day to day life, rather than fretting over broader meaning or happiness.

Like a great cup of coffee in the morning or a particularly funny joke or re-watching the video of Mushy's last 6 against India in the Asia Cup on YouTube.

"Knowing" how to be happy isn't that difficult, but applying what we know in our hearts and actually "being" happy takes holistic effort. There is happiness in that effort regardless of the outcome. Here's what I "know":

1. Battle the ego and his minions -- anger, indignation, depression, euphoria, greed, gluttony, lust, vanity, hatred and brutality -- with unconditional submission to GOD, and practice deference, empathy and love as sincere expressions of that submission. That being said, those debilitating emotions are natural parts of our psyche. The idea is to fight against them so that none can become a state of being.

2. Never lose sight of the child within you and the child in others.

3. Cultivate the audacity to do the above everyday.

Nasif bhai has spoken my mind. Happiness is a state of mind. If you want to make your state of mind such you will have happiness. The whole world is a mind game. Its all in your head. This is why a beggar can be as happy as a multi billionaire. The key to all this is to keep things simple and not to complicate things. I would like to think I have mastered this art.
