Asghar Khan’s petition finally comes
up for hearing
Afzal Khan (Dateline Islamabad)

3 March 2012, 9:41 PM
After a very long wait the petition filed by Air Marshal Asghar Khan against funds doled out by the establishment through the Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) to a select group of anti-Benazir Bhutto politicians in 1990 finally came up for hearing before the Supreme Court on Wednesday.

The case was, however, adjourned because of absence of certain key witnesses amid warning by the Chief Justice that notices must be issued to former chief of ISI Gen. Asad Durani, and former chief of Mehran Bank Younus Habib to appear before the court in the next hearing on March 8. By his own admission, Gen. Durrani had directly delivered the money to individual politicians and groups including Pakistan Muslim League’s Nawaz Sharif as ordered by the “boss”, meaning the then army chief Gen. Mirza Aslam Beg. In turn Gen. Beg had named the ‘chief executive’ (President Ghulam Ishaq Khan) for supervising the entire exercise. Nobody thought of ethnical or legal violations of their secret proceedings. Its sinister purpose was to defeat the Pakistan People’s Party (PPP) under Benazir Bhutto in the 1990 elections. A total of Rs140 million was disbursed after Mehran Bank illegally advanced it to the ISI account. Another Rs50 million was allegedly paid to Bangladesh’s Khalida Zia to help her in polls against Hasina Wajid’s Awami League generally perceived by Pakistan’s security establishment as pro-India.

Khaleej Times is a UAE based publication).

So we all read the allegations in The Economist some time back, and they related to the AL possibly receiving money from Indian benefactors...well we now have A Pakistani Air Marshal in the Pakistani Supreme Court alleging, Khaleda Zia and the BNP received the same sort of help from Pakistani benefactors.

So, come on down folks...lets get ready to rumble.

ISI vs RAW

Who will win the battle?

ISI vs RAW

Who will win the battle?
If Bangladesh starts to blow themselves up then ISI would have won. Anything other than that will be a victory to India. The important question is where does China fit in all this and how much influence Pak has on your army (if I remember right they funded a coup a couple of years back and Hasina requested Indian govts. help). From an Indian point of view as long as Hasina is in power we should be good friends. Khaleda is downright anti-indian and BNP in general is close to Pakistan.

If Bangladeshi's are intelligent & interested in developing they will play games with China and India to invest in Bangladesh...just like the Lankans are doing. If they are stupid they will end up blowing themselves

Having said that Pak and Bang give more credit to RAW than Indians themselves Many Indians do not even know the name of our spy agency. There was some media report which said 40% of RAWs resources was used by govt. on opposition.

In principle, teamindia, I agree. Given that nations generally have interests, not friends, and since your lot (India) are the 600-lb gorilla in the backyard, it makes more realpolitikal sense for us (Bangladesh) to play off China against India, and not really be in any of these powers' camps. Pakistan, I think, we can and should utterly discount, since at this point, I consider them a largely failed nation.

The problem lies in the fact that our current political leaders are so emotionally antagonistic to one another that they fail to be rational actors where the interests of the nation are concerned. Khaleda and BNP tend to be too pro-Pakistani/pro-China/anti-India, while Hasina and AL skew in the opposite direction*, not slightly (which would be fine), but severely. The result is a Foreign Policy that changes with the seasons, and is not particularly effective.

*For instance, transit rights could have been used as a particularly strong bargaining point regarding water sharing and border abuse, but wasn't.

Well further confirmation from the ISI with regards to their funding of the BNP - and it is now being reported widely in the local media.

ISI admits funding BNP

Fri, Mar 16th, 2012 9:57 pm BdST

Dhaka, Mar 16 (bdnews24.com) –Pakistan's spy agency Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) has admitted that it had funded the BNP during the 1991 general elections which the party won and formed the government.

The confession came from no less than former ISI chief Asad Durrani during a Pakistan Supreme Court hearing on the spy agency's mandate on Wednesday.

He also confessed to supporting insurgency in India's northeast.

Prime minister Sheikh Hasina on Mar 10 accused BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia of taking money from ISI before the June 1996 and Oct 2001 parliamentary elections.

"It is beyond doubt that she (Khaleda) took money before 1996 national polls. The future will reveal more on... I think the amount was higher in 2001," the Awami League chief had said.

But the BNP denied the allegation.

A three-member bench of the top court headed by chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary grilled the former spy agency chief on ISI's funding for politicians both within and outside Pakistan.

Recently a UAE-based daily had alleged that ISI paid 50 crore rupees to BNP chairperson Khaleda Zia ahead of the 1991 elections.

There are allegations that the ISI has been active in Bangladesh whenever the BNP has been in power in 1991-96 and later during 2001-06.

The spy agency was also alleged to have launched a campaign from Bangladesh to destabilise the India's northeast region by patronising and providing logistic support, including funds, to the insurgent groups operating from Bangladesh.

The ISI is also alleged to have supported a network in Bangladesh, which includes the Jamaat-e-Islami, the BNP and northeast insurgents groups during the BNP's rule
BNP earlier in the week demanded proof of such allegations...well here is the provider of the money giving proof. Will that suffice, or is a Bank Statement necessary?
