Does anyone know whether Biman would allow passenger to upgrade their seat from economy to business class whilst checking in, on the day of the journey ?

I never understood upgrades. Are they free? Discounted fare? Only for frequent flyers? How do they work? Can you just walk up and ask if there is an empty seat?

Sometimes I'll get upgraded just because there are empty seats and I'm traveling alone.

Default JP Morgan gives Biman $277M loan to by new aircraft

http://www.thefinancialexpress-bd.co...ate=2011-08-09

looks like the 2 new 777-300 ERs are now finally a reality. three + years since the announcement - Biman originally announced a date of 2013 so they're actually got ahead of schedule for once!

loans will be paid back in 12 years on a quarterly basis...so thats i guess 48 payments.

that article says biman will expand its route and is expecting growth...hope those pan out. any word on when Biman will get its JFK landing slot back? or do they have it already and just waiting for the aircraft?

Default Biman now accepting [full]credit card payments online!

http://www.thefinancialexpress-bd.co...ate=2011-08-04

you can now book your tix online...previously you could place a booking but had to physically go to the Biman office to pay in cash. good to see this happened without too much delay.

That is an interesting read.
Thanks for the link Asaad.

Unfortunately, my only recent experience with Biman was nothing to mention about.

Flew back from Sylhet via Dubai on Saturday the 13th with Biman Airbus A310.

Seat space: Not designed for me.
Food: Going downhill..... (I mean you probably will get better food in streets of Bangladesh)
Cabin Crew: Was good for a change....to be honest I have never blame them.

And guess who was part of cabin crew. Sanowar Hossain .

Never travelled by Biman in any int route... but good to see they are buying some aircrafts. If they don't make profit why dont they just privatize Biman? These could be big earnings for the government, if managed well. Will these aircrafts bring profit for Biman? or else why waste money?

Official held for smuggling

The operations manager of Biman Bangladesh was arrested on Monday on the charge of smuggling after being caught red-handed while leaving the Calcutta airport with electronic goods on Sunday.
Mohd Ariful Rehman, 37, was trying to smuggle out contraband worth over Rs 45 lakh, said Customs officers.
This is the first instance of a high-ranking airlines official being involved in smuggling at the city airport in recent memory.
Rehman, who hails from Dhaka and has been posted in Calcutta for the last 14 months, admitted to having smuggled goods for the "last two months", said a Customs official.
"We had been tipped off about Rehman and were keeping an eye on him. On Sunday, he tried to leave the airport through the departure entrance instead of the arrival exit. We accosted him and found smuggled goods on him. Later, on Monday, he broke down during interrogation and admitted that he had been involved in smuggling in the last couple of months," said a senior Customs officer.
The officers found microchips worth Rs 46,30,000 on him wrapped in a Biman Bangladesh packet, after which he was detained and grilled throughout the next day and arrested in the evening.
Rehman said he used a special pass issued to airlines officials to board the plane at the parking bay, before the passengers disembarked. Here, he received the consignment from a contact.

Well its a giant leap as when it came to widebodies, Biman were stuck with the nostalgic but increasingly outdated DC10 like for ever.

The 777 ER is the most popular long range aircraft over the last 10 years (would be 747 if we consider last 3 0 years), and it does feel good that Biman has 777 300 ERs now

I dont think any other airline has made the DC10 - 777 jump directly, it would often be DC10-747-330-777 or DC10-767-777
