Kalibari-morer Chhana'r dokaner chhana'r jilapi. During yearly visit at mamabari in school days, my big mama would send us for pet-chukti mishti'r feasty at Chhana's. In spite of Chhana's apotti: "Razzak bhai (big mama) to gotobar-er bill-dai dan-nai ahono", we won't stop before gobbling up adha sher each.

On the other side of Bengal perhaps! Not us..ours is a mix of traditional bangla mach-bhaat and mughlai dishes, so abundant in old Dhaka..

.... I know I know.... its like all those years I thought people from Delhi only eat Laddu, until I met a gal from Delhi recently (atleast she claim that she is from Delhi) who ordered a veggie sandwitch.

I know the store you are talking about. But I'm affraid you missed the best one. even though you just remind me of another speciality of sirajganj. yes, in no where else would you get chhanar jelapi, at least not like sirajganji. it does not look like jelapi at all and soaked in sugar juice (shira).
nihi, if you liked that if you ever get a chance to go to sirajganj again to go 'vola kha's dokan and eat the same thing. its not far from kali babir more, and at the other end of the big bridge (boro pul).

Zunaid bhai - hatebreed is actually talking about koliji singara from Kohinoor, not Ananda. Kohinoor was at the corner of the building where dosh hazar rickshaws always stood at your hukum. Never ate anything like Kohinoor's singara.
|
I think you're right coz I don't remember any ananda confectionary there except the one in BAF shaheen school.. tell me if I'm correct, was there a collapsible gate on the staircase adjacent to the restaurant? that's the one I'm talking about..
anyway, here's a few more additions to my list... - Shimer bichir torkari with chhoto machh, aloo ar tomato
- Rui machh
- Bangladeshi-style Chinese/Thai food
- There was a kebab shop on the way to Mohammadpur, I forgot the name.. they served excellent shik kebab!
- Tikya kebab
- Shahi biriyani
- Mughlai lamb biriyani
- Mughlai porota
- Bhuna korbanir gosht with chaaler roti
- Beler shorbot
- Daber pani
- Leboor shorbot (home-made)
- Borhani
- Balushai mishti
- Boondia
- Dimer halooa (home-made by mom)
- Doodher chhana
- Shemai
- The 'finger-licking' firni served after wedding dinners.
- Kathal er kosh diye makhano moori
- Paka aam, doodh (or mishti doi) ar kola makhano bhat (or chira)
ahhh so many more!!!

Spot on!
I was amazed the first time I went to a chinese restaurant run by actual chinese ppl... food was terrible... kept trying several until one of them tasted somewhat like the bengali ones.

I wouldn't say it's terrible.. it's great as long as you know what to order and what to expect!.. when it comes to foreign food I'm more into Italian.. lasagna is sooo gooood!...sorry a bit off topic :P
but yea I love the chinese restaurants in BD.. Chillis and Xanial are among the best

Well, there were couple of restaurants in PG, but those were kind of inside the building among the longish pharmacy stores with rather regular restaurant like setup and not like open-to-curb convenient-store-look jump-in-from-rickshaw type like Kohinoor. As far as I recall, there was this narrow dark entrance with collapsible gate somewhere near Kohinoor. But then the name might have changed by this time, it's been over 6 years since I had been there last time. Or may be the change had taken place at an even earlier era, aka Zunaid bhai era.

Yeah, that's very possible. The Chhana'r dokan used to be very close to my mamabari so can recall that rather vividly. Might have been to the other store sometime during the quick excursions around the city. Btw, boro pul != Eliott Bridge, is it?

I know what you mean..it is the one I was talking about... speaking of p.g. hospital, there was also a superb halim stall somewhere near the hospital gate and the bot gachh... their halim was one of the best I've had
p.s. i'm talking about almost 7 years ago.

you guys havent left anything to mention
here are my picks searching through the memory lane
>shik kabab, boti kabab, tanduri, mughlai parata (from "italy" restaurants)
>parota with gorur mangsho(beef) usually in gaye holud
>kachi biriyani of fakruddin in marrige dinner
>halim with lots of spices, meat, lemon after iftari
> dense roshomalai, spongy roshogolla
