Default Muslims in Bangladesh burn down Buddhist temples in anger over Facebook photo

Quote:

Muslims in Bangladesh burn down Buddhist temples in anger over Facebook photo
COX'S BAZAR, Bangladesh -- Thousands of Bangladeshi Muslims angry over an alleged derogatory photo of the Islamic holy book Quran on Facebook set fires in at least 10 Buddhist temples and 40 homes near the southern border with Myanmar, authorities said Sunday.
The violence began late Saturday and continued until early Sunday, said Nojibul Islam, a police chief in the coastal district of Cox's Bazar.
He said the situation was under control Sunday afternoon after extra security officials were deployed and the government banned public gatherings in the troubled area.
He said at least 20 people were injured in the attacks that followed the posting of a Facebook photo of a burned copy of the Quran. The rioters blamed the photo on a local Buddhist boy, though it was not immediately clear if the boy actually posted the photo.
Bangladesh's popular English-language Daily Star newspaper quoted the boy as saying that the photo was mistakenly tagged on his Facebook profile. The newspaper reported that soon after the violence broke out, the boy's Facebook account was closed and police escorted him and his mother to safety.
Joinul Bari, chief government administrator in Cox's Bazar district, said authorities detained the boy's parents and were investigating.
Buddhists make up less than 1 percent of Muslim-majority Bangladesh's 150 million people.
The Bangladeshi violence follows protests that erupted in Muslim countries over the past month after a low-budget film, "Innocence of Muslims," produced by a U.S. citizen denigrated the Prophet Muhammad by portraying Islam's holiest figure as a fraud, womanizer and child molester.
Some two dozen demonstrators were killed in protests that attacked symbols of U.S. and the West, including diplomatic compounds.
Nice...

This is nothing new unfortunately...2001-2005 was a bad, bad period for minorities.

It looks like a certain group is trying to get things going again unfortunately

The sad thing for me is, perfectly normal ppl joining in with these bastards as part of a mob and partaking in wanton destruction

'Jamaat fanned communal riot'

Mon, Oct 1st, 2012 1:02 am BdST

Mintu Chowdhury and Shankar Barua Rumi
bdnews24.com Correspondents

Ramu/Cox's Bazar, Sep 30 (bdnews24.com)—The communal violence that ravaged a pre-dominantly Buddhist village in Cox's Bazar's Ramu Upazila was instigated by a religion-based political party, residents of the locality alleged.

They said the party played with local Rohingya refugees' rage against people of the Buddhist community after the recent sectarian violence between Muslims and Buddhists in northern Rakhine province in Myanmar.

Those who launched the attack chanted, "Naraye Takbir," the slogan Jamaat-e-Islami use in its political programmes.

According to locals, leaders of an Islamist party held a rally at 10pm on Sunday night alleging defamation of the Quran by posting a photograph on social networking website Facebook.

Those who addressed the rally claimed a Buddhist youth named Uttam Barua of Bouddha Parha posted the photograph on his Facebook account.

The rally touched off a mayhem that lasted for five hours starting around 11:30pm. Seven Buddhist Viharas or monasteries, around 30 houses and shops were torched, and more than a hundred other houses and shops were also attacked, vandalised and looted.

District administration had to impose section 144, which bans public gathering, for an indefinite period on Sunday morning to rein in the unrest, followed by the commissioning of an inquiry into the incident. The incident shocked Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who is currently visiting New York, who ordered bringing attackers into book.

Buddhists and other ethnic and religious minorities were living in fear in Ramu and areas close by even though huge contingents of Police, Rapid Action Battalion, Border Guard Bangladesh and Army were deployed to contain the unrest.

Locals alleged the unrest turned catastrophic just because of 'negligence' by police and RAB officials in ensuring security to distressed people.

Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, while visiting the area on Sunday, said the attacks were "planned."

"The attack was conducted in a coordinated manner. Temples and houses were set on fire using patrol and gun powder. It would have been impossible if the attacks were not planned," he revealed.

Resident Director of Sheema Rajban Vihara at Merongloa Parha in the Ramu, Progyananda Bhikkhu, shared his firsthand experience with bdnews24.com. He said at first a procession came and hurled brickbats at the houses in the area and vandalised boundary walls made of corrugated iron sheets.

"Around four to five hundred people chanting 'Naraye Takbir' entered our Parha (locality) as the night got darker. They set the temples on fire first," said Progyananda.

According to him, two donation boxes and a gold idol of Buddha were looted during the attack and at least 10 houses were set ablaze.

The Buddhist religious leader said it was the first time he encountered such violence and did not know how to respond.

"The violence spread due to a reluctant administration. Had police and RAB members taken the early initiative, the whole incident would have been averted," he said.

General Secretary of a temple in the Vihara, Tarun Barua reported seeing people whom he had never before seen in his locality.

"We have been living long alongside the Muslims. We did not even imagine that they could attack us. Such a big attack in reprisal of such a trivial incident was unbelievable," said Barua.

Residents of different areas including Mithachharhi and Shreekul had similar observations to make.
Barua believes the anger of the Rohingya refugees living in Cox's Bazaar was fanned. "Jamaat-e-Islami may have instigated the unrest," he suggested.

Cox's Bazaar Jhilongja Union Parishad Chairman Gias Uddin Ziku said he found Jamaat-e-Islami activists gathering around different villages of minority people and he himself made them to leave and reported it to the police.

Ziku, also Office Secretary of Cox's Bazar district committee of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal, heard the news of the attack minutes later.

Ramu Upazila Parishad Chairman Sohel Sarowar Kajal thought the violence was carried out by hiring people from outside Ramu.

He also pointed the finger at the neglect of RAB and Police for the situation getting worse. "They reached the crime scene way later. Many damages could have been avoided if they had arrived as soon as violence broke out."

"We don't understand why life has undergone this change. They attacked us with machetes and hammers. We don't even know who they are," said Nikash Barua, a resident.

He said he heard the slogan 'Naraye Takbir' during the attack.

Cox's Bazaar district Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami Md Shahjahan brushed aside the allegations of instigating the unrest.

"Causing damages to life and livelihood, or attacking religious institutions should not be the language of protests. Islam does not permit it either. Jamaat-e-Islami despises these acts," said Shahjahan.

He, however, said instigators were those who want to turn the country into a 'militant' state.

The incident also left Muslims of the area shocked and grappling with the justification for the attack on Buddhists.

no surprise that the Jaamat-BNP nexus was involved...these are scary people, and their supporters on the forum are worse.

'educated' racists and extremists.

This was one of the reasons I was against the Rohingya being let in...people here called me heartless, but I knew they would be used bythe f-ing mullahs to cause communal trouble here.

Predictably BNP wants a 'fair' investigation, meaning stop blaming our BFF - absolute scum.

oh and a big for the govt. I know you can't anticipate everything...but what the hell do the police and intelligence groups do all day? no inkling of the troubles until it was too late.

Regardless of the mullahs doing it...big failure for the govt....you have to protect your citizens, it really is as simple as that.

Attacks on Buddhists

It all started from a tiny phone repair shop

A very tiny, ordinary shop of a teenager at Ramu's Fakirabazar market area was the starting point of the six-hour-long communal campaign against the Buddhist on Saturday night, wreaking havoc on an otherwise peaceful area.

Eighteen-year-old Omar Faruk, who runs a mobile servicing shop there, is one of the very few who actually saw the picture insulting the Quran on Uttam Kumar Barua's Facebook page.

A Facebook friend, and not a real-life one, Faruk saved in his computer the image of the web page that showed Uttam was tagged in this derogatory photo.

Within a short time many people came to see the image, and at one point Faruk provided the soft copy of the photo to "three to four" people who wanted it, claiming to be journalists.

But that seems to be all. No one else among the several thousand fanatics who gathered in Ramu upazila town that night to destroy century-old Buddhist temples and pagodas has seen it on Uttam's Facebook page.

But the news of the image of a foot planted on a copy of the Quran on Uttam's Facebook account spread like wildfire from the evening.

Through Bluetooth, it passed from one mobile to another while printed copies were circulated and exhibited in the processions and rallies, inciting the demonstrators.

But Faruk, while relating to this correspondent as to how the publicity of the image had begun from his shop, claims neither to have printed it nor sent it to anyone's mobile phone. He says he has no idea about who copied and then distributed those among the demonstrators.

It was around 6:00pm on Saturday that he went back to his shop with his cousin, Abdul Muktadir, after having some snacks at a nearby restaurant.

Two youths, aged about 25, came to his shop at the time.
“I don't know them, never saw them before. They came to fix a mobile,” Faruk said.

While he was working on the mobile, Muktadir, a student of Shyamoli Polytechnic in Chittagong, was checking his Facebook account.

“At one point, I told Muktadir to log out from his account and log in on my account."
When asked if Muktadir knew his ID and password, he said, "I went to the computer desk and logged in on my account and returned to my work desk. After a few moments, Muktadir shrieked, saying 'What picture is this?'" Faruk said.

None of the so called Islamic political parties, those who obviously felt pain for Rohingya people being attacked ... now seems lost their heart.

Then where?

“In the field. In the betel nut plantation.” She mutters again. We had to get down on our knees to pick up her voice.

Why?
“Because they came.”
Who came?
“They.”
Who are they?
Silence.
Who? Who are they?
More silence.
Why did they come?
Silence again.
Tell us.
“To kill us.”
To kill you? Why?
Silence. And then: “Because we are Buddhists.”
Because you are Buddhist?
“Yes.”

Opportunistic bastards...so much negative press, deserved and undeserved. And we add another story to it.

I always take a lot of pride in the fact that, we aren't Pakistan and while this was disgraceful, tbf, this is a shock because this is rare in Bangladesh...but it is yet another case of shooting ourselves in the foot - something we're very good at.

The image in the west of Bangladeshi muslims is one of..a pious population, but one that is moderate and tolerant. This one incident doesn't disprove that, but what it does is, it allows the western media to tie us in with the mad over a cartoon mob, and worse, start mentioning us alongside Pakistan.

There can be no good in being mentioned in the same sentence as Pakistan, none....

We Bangladeshis, Muslim or not, really should think where this hatred, unjustified, soulless destruction come from. What possible benefit can it bring to those who took part in that inhuman destruction, religious piety? revenge? what is it? Being fooled, provocated, ignorant is not enough to be excused unless we really give it a good think, otherwise we are just few years behind from Islamabad, Kabul and some other parts in Africa.

apus and bhais, I just got back to New York.

First of all WE all know who did these. Cox' Bazzar and then Chittagong is one of the major Jamaat strong-holds in the country. But no matter how much BNP-Jamaat and/or any other Islamic fundamentalists groups of Bangladesh or any other political groups of Bangladesh that play Islam and or religion as a major tool to engage in local politics are responsible for these kinds of cowardly, shameless, jighangsha-based attacks on innocent people, I hold the government responsible as well as dr. turbo said. The Government HAS a resposibilty to protect it's citizen, and of all, it's most fragile, weakest in power and most under-privileged ones. Or else, it would be seen as a total worthless, lame-duck administration! The Pilkhana massacre also on my mind to add to this. No matter who did these, what did YOU do about it or doing about these acts/crimes/events?

To get back to the event of rampage/burning/torture of the Buddhist communities in Cox's Bazaar - it reminds us of 1971. These attackers, these shame-less, and coward (now Gaa dhaka disey, what a bunch of low lives) men, young men are the re-birth of the Razakaars - the Al-Shams, Al- Badr brigades of Bangladesh that collaborated with and took parts in the slaughterings of Bangladeshi innocent Hindus and Muslims along with the Pakistani Army. These are the genuine Off-springs of teh original Razakaars and the seeds of Jighagsha continues on this land that we call Bangladesh. Now we ask where is the justice, where is the punishment for these 1971 razakaars, ai hai hai, a lot of them are mixed amongst us, moved up the ladder in society, and some razakaars of 1971 even are actively involved with the rulling Awami League as well. And a lot of them, they burned their Al-Badr, Al-Shams paper/IDs from 1971 as soon as the wind turned against them and soon as them and their lovers fell to defeat. We wonder how can we find them??? Look no further, they are right here, in front of our very eyes, these criminals that caused the atrocities Cox's Bazaar a few days ago. They are hiding now? Are you kidding me? Bangladesh is 55,598+ sq. miles....and it has 150+ millions of people...NO criminals in Bnagladesh can hide, IF the law enforcements JUST genuinely try to apprehand these scumbags!! I mean, in Bangladesh if I just breathe and just think, nothing else, YOU should be able to hear me sitting next to me. So it will be totally UNACCPTABLE if we hear the RABs, the Police and many other law enforcement agencies all together cannot find the perpretrator (spell) or if we hear, Ohh they have fled to a foreign country!!! The people of Bangladesh, the good people of Cox's Bazaar should not accept that no more. These criminals, no matter where they are hiding now, I refuse to believe, in a densely populated place it won't leak out who they are, these crimnals will not slip and speak with their closed ones. And you have to catch them with massive raids, simultanious if possible and take these scumbags to custody ASAP. and then do the teratment, and they will speak and tell you what you need to hear. As cricman said, I urge the government, I urge our leader and PM Sheikh Hasina to unleash severe force upon these perpretrators (spell) of Cox's Bazaar. Please make an example NOW, that not here in Bangladesh, you can get away with this. The spirits of 1971 will continue to cry for iternity, let's not add to that pain by failing to catch these scumbags of 2012.

2004-5 during BNP-Jamaat rule, when atrocities were commited against the Bangladeshi Hindu communities and other minorities, that was a direct action/responsibilities of the people in power of that time. But it is 2012 and Awami League is power, and since those previous accused government is no lnager in power, my question to the PM, what are you going to do about it now? The responsibilty is on your shoulder now. Your government will be held responsible for failure to protect it's citizens, it's minorities when that is suppossed to be one of the main mottos of this party, AL.

To add more to this crime in Cox's Bazaar, the random things that are running through my mind right now - Cox's Bazaar, in our country, as far as I know is the most cosmopolitan of all places in Bangladesh. CB - It has Muslim Bangalies, Hindus, Buddhist, Burmese, Rohingyas, Chakmas and a few other tribal groups members that call CB their home. This place is a genuine symbol of a Bangladesh that the father of this nation, Bongobondhu Sheikh Mujib (RIP), and the other founding father of our nation once envisioned. A land for all and any religion, respecting another man's faith (a direct mention in the Al-Kuran, but rejected by Jamaat and similar groups) and co-existing peacefully within a larger cosmoplitan community concept (which in the early centuries of Islamic political/social growth(aka Islam's Golden Age) was highly encouraged and developed, again ideas rejected by Jamaat and similar groups and also neo-Nazi, right-winger groups and the American conservatives and Gun-right scums)
To get back to the point of the Meaning of Cox's Bazaar, what I wanted to say was, to attack here against the Buddhist in such brutal, shameful fashion is like striking upon the very core of the CONCEPT of Bangladesh.

The meaning of Jighangsha - from early childhood Bengali in Haro-Lal Roy's Beyakoron (grammer) book - I remember learnign this word that stuck with me till I die....Jighangsha - It has Hingsha embeded in it you see...it means a deep hatred or I think a deep hate-filled desire to cause harm upon another living being. I know bhais I get distracted very easily...and now days even more...but I also remembered something else that I wanted add to all these that said above....A lot of times WE believe that we Bangalies are very peaceful and usually devoid of high-violence. That is a very wrong idea and often a dillusional concept. Because we, even I many a times in the past, used to think that, beacuse it feels GOOD to think that, it is a denial of the mind. We Banglaies are no different than any other groups or race in the world when it comes to violence. Deep violence reside in all group of people, it varries from person to person. Deep violence, or complete disregard for another living being, for another person or how THIS other person FEELS, I think, could be inherent, by born and can a learned behaviour as well. We had the most violent people with us, amongst us always, all along, in Bangladesh, before and after the birth of the country....look at the Razakaars...weren't they Bangalies? And the Pilkhana BDR massacre, those criminals were all Bangalies.

We cringed at the Taliban destroying ancient statues...only for thousands of our citizens to do the same

Places of worship and dwellings today, people tomorrow? Will we seek to 'rationalize' that too?

My HONEST advice for the minorities who are living at places overruned by bangali settelers, RUN.
Prepare yourself before its too late. Coz more to come. Neither your neighbour nor Bangladesh govt or any international agency can save you from inevitable future of bad fortune of you & your families for your being born here.
Everybody scares 'Muslim world' now, bruhaha..
