Batting

Averages

With two Tests still to be played Steve Harmison (14.50), Douglas Hondo (16.00), Glenn McGrath (16.00), Jason Gillespie (16.50) and Harbhajan Singh (17.22) all have better Test averages than Shaun Pollock (14.41) who has been often cited as the best all-rounder in the world.

Out of the players with top 10 Test highest averages for 2004, three of them are Zimbabwean. Stuart Carlisle - 97.00, Sean Ervine - 80.00 and Heath Streak - 68.00.

Adam Gilchrist (average: 37.57) is the fifth best Test batsman-wicket keeper. Behind Kumar Sangakkara (55.70), Parthiv Patel (43.62) and Brendon McCullum (38.06).

Matthew Hayden (average: 42.32) is the 10th best Test opening batsman. Ahead of him are Herschelle Gibbs (63.63), Virender Sehwag (63.38), Andrew Strauss (57.85), Justin Langer (57.04), Sanath Jayasuria (56.50), Chris Gayle (54.04), Graeme Smith (50.38), Marvan Attapattu (48.30) and Gautam Gambhir (43.85).

Centuries

So far, out of all the current captains only Ricky Ponting and Sourav Ganguly have not scored a Test century in 2004. Habibul Bashar has 1, Michael Vaughan 3, Stephen Fleming 2, Inzamam-ul-Haq 2, Graeme Smith 2, Marvan Attapattu 4, Brian Lara 3.

Both England and South Africa have had eight centurions in 2004, whilst Australia and the West Indies are in joint second with 7 apiece. Perhaps most surprsingly, both Pakistan and Bangladesh have had the same amount of century makers this year - 4.

Strike Rates

3 out of the top 5 players with the best strike rates (and 400+ Test runs) are openers. Chris Cairns (SR: 86.52) and Adam Gilchrist (74.15) lead the way, followed by Virender Sehwag (73.61), Chris Gayle (71.24) and Sanath Jayasuria (70.01).

Whilst on the subject on strike rates, England fastest scorer is not Andrew Flintoff (68.57), but in fact the man with the best S/R in the world (and 100+ runs), Steve Harmison (90.62).

Economy Rates

Shivnarine Chanderpaul is the only bowler not to concede a run in 2004
after bowling a solitary maiden against England. Of those who have
bowled over 40 overs, Heath Streak's 1.52 is the best, whilst Sanath
Jayasuria (2.32) is the most miserly bowler with over 100 overs bowled
in 2004.

Brett Lee is the most expensive bowler in 2004 (of those who have
bowled more than one over), with an economy rate of 5.32 from 51.5
overs. Pakistan's Imran Farhat is second with 5.07 (30.1 ovs).
Jermaine Lawson is the most expensive to have bowled 100+ overs
(4.46).

Averages

Out of the players with top 10 Test best averages for 2004, four of
them are Zimbabwean. Heath Streak (12.60) is second, Andy Blignaut
(17.00) is fourth, Ray Price (20.00) is sixth and Travis Friend
(20.00) is seventh. Between them they took 19 wickets before their
contracts were cancelled by the ZCU.

Meanwhile, another Zimbabwean, this time their captain/wicket-keeper,
Tatenda Taibu has a better average (27.00) than Shoaib Akhtar (28.23)
and Chaminda Vaas (28.65). West Indies part time leg spinner,
Ramnaresh Sarwan (29.71) joins Taibu in having a better average than
Shaun Pollock (30.60), Matthew Hoggard (30.88) and Daniel Vettori
(32.21).

Glenn McGrath is the only bowler with over 10 wickets to average under
20 (42 wkts @ 18.42). At the other end of the spectrum, Tareq Aziz is
set to finish the year with the highest bowling average (261.00) and
of those who have bowled over 100 overs, Ajit Agarkar's 204.00 is the
worst.



Miscellaneous

The West Indies have had 21 centuries scored against them in 2004,
this is the joint record with India in 1983. Herschelle Gibbs got the
bowling with 142 in January whilst Graham Thorpe (114) scored the 21st
and final in August. Michael Vaughan was the only player to score
three centuries against them, whilst Jacques Kallis, Herschelle Gibbs,
Graham Thorpe, Andrew Flintoff and Marcus Trescothick recorded two
each.

Of those bowlers who have not recorded a wicket in 2004, Zimbabwe's
Tawanda Mupariwa conceded the most runs (136), closely followed by
Simon Katich (135). Nathan Bracken bowled the most overs without
taking a wicket, 45 in total.

Matthew Hoggard has taken the most wickets without taking a 5-for (42)
followed by Shaun Pollock (38), although both still have one game to
correct this. Irfan Pathan and Chris Martin are the only seam bowlers
to achieve a 10-for this year, whilst seven spin bowlers have,
including Upul Chandana who still manages to average 40.40.

South Africa and the West Indies have used most bowlers this year –
19. This number includes only three who do not take their bowling
particularly seriously – Gary Kirsten, Neil McKenzie (both SA) and
Sylvester Joseph (WI). England have used the least, just 10, whilst
the rest have vary between 12 and 17.

For Pakistan, the four are Inzamam (2), Youhana (2, incl the current Test), Farhat and Younis Khan. Malik and Butt's 100s were in ODIs.

I was surprised to see the Zimb players standing out so much, even knowing that they are all the earlier batch. But then it struck me--did the earlier crop of Zimb players play test cricket against any team other than Bangladesh in 2004?
