Question Should ODI (50 overs) format be scrapped ?

The future of One Day International (ODI) cricket seems to be very uncertain. The effects of Twenty20 cricket (a.k.a Pro20 or T20) seem to be having a negative influence on the ODI game. Cricket Australia has said that the 2015 Cricket World Cup scheduled for Australia is not marketable. The England Cricket Board has scarped their domestic 50-over competition and replaced it with a 40-over game, while in South Africa we play a 45 over game in the MTN Domestic Championships.

Some people have suggested that the ODI game be split into two innings of 25 overs
. I think this is a terrible idea; we’re just going to land up with two Twenty20 games in one.

One article which says 2015 ODI WC is not marketable :

http://www.sport24.co.za/Columnists/...h-row-20090915

Another more radical one :

As India engages in yet another meaningless tournament in Sri Lanka and England's ODI series with Australia fails to generate any excitement, Adam Bayfield looks at the future of ODI cricket.

http://www.isport.in/international/f...di-cricket-734

One more :

http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/s...ow/6028891.cms

I think we should scrap ODIs and get a proper World Test Championship in place divided in 3 tiers and limit T20s to IPL & WT20.

I disagree with both ideas - that ODIs should be scrapped, as well as the ridiculous 30-nation test championship idea.

ODI format is my most favorite format in cricket. ODI format has a legacy, i am against the idea of scrapping it.

Might as well do away cricket altogether and produce our own version of Jan-Ove Waldner huh?

Despite the great number of one sided encounters in ODI, most of the nail biting finishes in the recent past has been in ODI games. And I do not think any alterations are needed right now. As someone else said, even the Ban-Eng ODI's in England were able to attract almost full houses, so the lack of interest argument is B* imo.
Of course ODI could do with a better scheduling, ICC intervening and giving equal opportunity to each team. But the format doesn't need any change, and as some of the experts believe that 3 formats can't co-exist, I beg to differ. There will always be cricket romantics who would sit through 5 days of cricket, excitement lovers who would watch 3 hours of T20 and several in between who would not mind 100 overs of cricket a day.

I will only consider 40-40 odis.
50 overs might be too long at times, but I still love this format.

cricket is fine as it is- maybe just umpiring n pitches are an issue- but in terms of format- just leave it as it is, and all those stupid administrators need to stop thinking they know whats good for the game and whats good for the fans. just leave the game alone.

I still think that it should be 40 overs match, get rid of 20 overs.

Scrap T20. People should not talk about Test and ODI elimination to begin with. And the guy who was suggesting about 30 countries test championship...What was he smoking??? Long live ODI

You mean none other than India should have the right to run a domestic league like IPL?
